If the parcel tracker thing says "Received from Customs - charges to be paid" and it's now in my local depot. can I just turn up, pay the duty and the 'handling charge' and walk out with my shiney stuff or do I have to wait for the letter to tell me the charges?

Phone the local depot - you can pay them the charges over the phone. Then they'll deliver it tomorrow or you can go and collect it (with id etc)
