Just wondered if I’m alone with this at all?
For years I seemed to have what I thought was a cold on and off but it was only really a runny nose, over time narrowed it down to whenever I ate peppers, then realised it was anything spicy and finally anything with paprika in.
Most of the time I can now deal with it and being symptomless is great but eating out’s the worst I find.
Have learned that alot of the things I love have paprika in so just have had to cut them out! Only crisps I can usually have now are ready salted, all those lovely flavours out there I just can’t risk eating!! Have to check any coated meats, sauces (bbq, tomato sauce and Hellman’s mayonnaise are banned)
If I do have it, it makes my sinuses very sensitive and they usually block up overnight and during the next 24 hours I blow my nose a lot, to the point where it gets sore and that’s even with having facial hair!! It’s easier to just bung some tissue up there and replace it every few mins when it’s soaked.... im not kidding!
Latest episode looks like it’s Wagamama’s yesterday for takeout, got the beef brisket bowl, no sign of anything spicy on the contents but soon as I started eating it could tell there was a bit of heat to it....
It’s such a sod as it’s like an intolerance that can be a real challenge, gluten/fish etc are almost easier as they’re specifically highlighted and my gluten intolerant fiancée agrees! I take antihistamine tablets twice a day as I have non-allergic rhinitis as advised by my GP and most of the time we do homemade pizza’s or when we get Gousto we substitute curry powder they provide or don’t use the chilli or peppers etc.
Just wondered if anyone else has the same? Sorry quite a long drawn out post too!
My mum and my sister: both get an allergic reaction if they eat chilli. Unfortunately, I have no advice other than to avoid it.
Got a friend who has it pretty bad. He's had a reaction standing beside the vent from an Indian restaurant.
Nothing serious just red and blotchy with sweats if he ingests any amount of chilli
Make sure that you don’t mean allergy rather than intolerance. Allergic reactions can potentially be more serious.
Maybe a capsaicin intolerance? Look it up?
Are you ok with sweet/bell peppers? These peppers don’t produce capsaicin. Some sweet paprika is made from bell peppers.
Peppers are also in the nightshade/Solanaceae family so it may not be the heat (capsaicin) alone (or even at all) that is causing your (rhinitis?) problem. Look up allergies related to Solanaceae plant family?
At least you have other options for homemade spicy foods (wasabi, schezuan peppercorns etc) but I’d be wanting to rule out/differentiate between:
1 ‘Intolerance’ vs ‘allergy’ and
2 Between capsaicin or some other compound (eg solanine) particularly as the latter includes plants such as potatoes and tomatoes
Is it possible to get tested?
*Edit:
Why limited to ready salted crisps? I know many/most brands use paprika as colouring but there are some flavours other than ready salted that don’t use it.
Quick look at ingredients on Tyrells for instance shows no paprika in the
sea salt and cider vinegar
sea salt and black truffle
sea salt and black pepper
Of course, if you (gods willing is not the case) have developed an allergy to potatoes that won’t help with crisps!
PPS, Mrs P is vegan so I tend to shop for crisps without dairy in (they nearly all have whey/and or lactose)
Recently discovered Ten Acre Crisps. Absolutely delicious (I like the BBQ ones but that has paprika, doh!) but noticed that they do a cheese and onion flavour that has no paprika (or dairy) in it.

How about Wasabi or mustard for a bit of heat.
I'm OK with paprika/chillies.
Horseradish/wasabi usually induces vomiting within seconds. Possibly psychosomatic as I love all other spicy foods, I don't know.
So many pubs/restaurants seem to be unable to cope with the fact that when you ask for roast beef sandwich without anything on it - even mentioning horseradish specifically - they will bring it out proudly saying it looked empty so the cook just added a bit of horse-radish and then offering to scrape it back off when you complain.
Thanks everyone it sounds like I’m not alone then, and yes I can’t eat any form of pepper at all, we thought it was tomatoes at one point but pleased to say that’s not the case and yes as has been mentioned we use mustard for a bit of heat and flavour in some dishes and yes sea salt and black pepper I’m fine with too.
Interesting to hear about ten acre crisps, when I find a brand of something that normally has paprika or peppers in and it doesn’t....it’s like I’ve struck gold! We shop at Lidl so that’s why it’s a ready salted only choice...
I’ll look up that intolerance, I’d definitely say it’s an intolerance rather than allergy, all it affects is my sinuses and it’s not uncommon to be sneezing 100 times a day or so if I get fully ‘paprika’d as I call it... was starting to get the symptoms last night around 4 so 6am took an antihistamine and it seems to have calmed down.
Outside for a few hours now putting up xmas lights so hopefully some fresh air will help too!
It is peculiar, as it’s made only come on since I was around 20 and now 35... but I now like mustard when I didn’t back then, I still don’t like sprouts though!!
Luckily my O/H is very understanding, as I also suffer from a dust allergy too, in a house with carpets for a day before covid? I’d start bunging up...
So it’s wood floors in our house aside from a few rooms and they’re kept well hoovered!
We’d all just be best off living in jungles like our ancestors many years ago, I bet these things didn’t exist!!
I have an intolerance of bell/salad peppers and paprika (but I’m ok with jalapeños, mustard, wasabi, horseradish) it’s so bad that I **** myself inside out and feel like crap for a couple of days after. Even the smell can trigger off a slight reaction. Last time I accidentally ingested peppers was thanks to innocent thinking it’s a good idea to put pepper juice into one of their drinks (Ginger shot), I’m used to checking food labels but who the hell puts peppers into a drink?! Just one sip of that and I was ill for 2 days and could still taste the drink a week later

Is sneezing/rhinitis then more commonly found in food intolerance rather allergic reaction? IANAD, genuinely interested though.
Interesting to hear about ten acre crisps
Funnily enough this week was buy a bag of crisps week (am dieting and budgeting, which is a good thing on both counts). Luxury crisps are deffo the thing as I have them rarely now. Was also interested to see how vegan cheese and onion could work out. Happy to say they are very good indeed! Still prefer the BBQ ones though, but that doesn’t help you. The Tyrells black truffle are good too

course, an allergy to chillis is well known
it's a Solanaceae allergy - includes tomatoes/aubergines/potatoes
all the same biological family as deadly nightshade...

^ Not necessarily. There is also allergic reaction or intolerance to capsaicin, which is from chilli peppers but not bell peppers. But you’re correct about solanine.
OP, found this from Manchester Uni which may be of interest:
Allergy to bell pepper is commonly reported with respiratory symptoms rather than reactions of the mouth or skin (most commonly rhinoconjunctivitis but also asthma) which is slightly unusual. Headaches were also reported which are sometimes associated with allergic rhinitis but are otherwise rarely reported as a symptom of food allergy. Allergy to bell pepper is often associated with the celery-birch-mugwort-spice syndrome.

Jesus well it seems I’ve been hit by it again.... forgot to mention most vegetable stock cubes use paprika too... made tea yesterday and all we had was a left over hello fresh veg stock packet, checked the ingredients and all seemed okay.
All is not ok, lots of sneezing today and right nostril either wanting to run or both feeling like they’re throbbing...
Antihistamine taken so should be fine by morning.... it’s the most frustrating thing but that’s all I can think has set me off is the veg stock powder.
Good job she’s a heavy sleeper as I’m sniffing a’plenty!
Frustratingly though I can’t see anything about the ingredients to suggest something that the veg stock cube has bad items for me in it....
^ If your problems are related to celery-birch-muwort-spice syndrome then maybe celery? Stock cubes usually have celery. Again, suggest getting tested for allergic reactions.

Maybe try this instead:

^ EDIT, the Kallo veg cubes do contain celery. It was early and my eyes were blurry. Although in defence, green text on green background is a poor graphic design decision when highlighting allergens! Mods please remove, have reported.
Will have a look into all these suggestions, today went downhill... no ideas what’s caused it but out for a walk with friends and got caught out only having one tissue, had to blow my nose on the inside of my hoodie! Absolutely minging, even side snotting wouldn’t help! Just popped a Benadryl at 3pm so will see if that has any effect, none whatsoever so far, only thing that helps is stuffing up bits of tissue up each nostril and waiting for them to be replaced every 5 mins!
Having a real good look at what has been in the last few days meals...
Mrs Dubs has the nightshade allergy* - causes severe eczema if she has any. Passed down through maternal family. Tomatoes, capsicum peppers, or any spice made out of them.
Doesn't seem to be allergic to aubergine or potatoes, but I have an intolerance to aubergine so we don't cook that either.
We are religious about checking ingredients on packaging. Any mention of spices and it's just not worth it.
Thankfully, lots of brands have started putting the specific spices used on the ingredients list, even so some things still slip through the net.
She's also intolerant of fizzy drinks - not as bad as the spices, but same symptoms.
*didn't know it had a name, so that's useful to know.
Wow sounds similar to me, I wouldn’t mind but I must’ve gone a month without issues and just recently it’s been bad! Annoys me when I look at knorr stock cubes and it just says “natural flavourings” !!
and it just says “natural flavourings”
In our experience, 9/10 times that will be paprika. They put it in everything, even mayonnaise.
You’re right there! Hellman’s Mayo has it in, but I’ve found that lidl mayonnaise doesn’t have it in!
Got some big local butcher bought steaks for tea tonight so hoping a good amount of meat and raw flavour blows out this mess! Had to put a tissue in my mask earlier as my Nose was dripping into my mask!
I can only thank whatever deity there might be out there* that I don’t have that problem, ‘cos I’m inordinately fond of spicy food, and I’ll often put black pepper and chilli flakes on my sandwiches, dinner, etc, (but not my cornflakes, that would be gross).
*Just hedging my bets, you understand... 😉
I did suddenly develop hay fever and an allergy to cats in my 40’s, triggered by a friend’s cat, having never had an issue before.
You might find one of those steroid up-the-nose sprays helps. Used for hay fever, you can buy them over the counter. Sounds like it’s worth trying.
I just wanted to pipe up about this.....found some crisps I though I could eat the other day as didn’t Have paprika in.....
My usual symptoms came back, checked further and they had E160C in, otherwise known as paprika extract!!!
Couldn’t believe it, wanted to mention it should it help others in future!
My step mother gets blisters in her mouth if she eats anything with chillies in it. I assume that this is an extreme version of the allergy.
Interesting thread. I love chili and paprika. I don't have anything serious, though thinking about it I do sneeze with paprika. Noticed it especially when cooking chorizo and European chorizo tends to have paprika.
Now I'm also wondering about stuffy blocked nose I get a lot at night and wonder about dishes I have in the evening, often with chili. I tend to stick the stuff in most dishes to give them a kick.
Probably nothing though. Anyway, I'm more convinced the stuffy nose is alcohol related.
Oh yes I remember when my housemate at the time before I settled down would cook with chilli and within seconds I was coughing as it gets in the air...
Does sound like it might be slightly related, god I feel sorry for her that’s even worse than me and I thought I was about the worst. Literally one bag of crisps with paprika in gave me 48 hours of blocked and then runny nose hell.... I even say that the symptoms aren’t worth the short joy I’d get for eating something with it in!
Worst part is I love it, pepperoni, a chilli with heat in, flavoured crisps.... it does seem to have got worse within I’d say the last few years for sure.
I wonder if there’s a study out there that’s looking at long term metabolic changes? I say this as I used to be able to eat it, then since I met my now fiancée I have this huge intolerance to it, and she’s gluten intolerant so could there be something in the way my body reacts to eating some gluten free things? I have my own bread as hers is terrible, but we share pasta. Even she says gluten intol is easier as it’s recognised and clearly marked... no such luck for mine, people who don’t understand can be frustrating but soon as they see me unable to talk without tissues they soon see why.... sorry if this is boring to some, has been interesting hearing other views though...
Oh btw I’m fine with black and white pepper as they’re a different type. It’s actual peppers or anything related...
