Do drivers get held to account when they kill? Watching it on delay now.

Scary stuff. £85 for killing a man, £1400 for killing a squirrel.

Hmm, if anyone (hello? Hello?) 😆 is thinking of iPlayering this, don't bother. It starts off about the justice system not working then completely changes to a documentary about how "infotainment" systems are bad. Odd. Totally loses it's message.

Yeah. Massive missed opportunity to cover an increasingly important issue.

Yep, turned off when I felt like the only true way to run people down was in a Mazda Iphone

You're far more likely to stay out of prison if you kill a cyclists than if you kill someone else.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/28345522

If you have an enemy, and he rides a bike, kill him with your car then hold up your hands, walk to the nearest policeman and say the sun was in your eyes. You'll be home in time for tea.

+1 as above it lost the plot did anyone see 'dangerous drivers ' last night that was proper scary. 22 yo girl with the amount of videod crimes committed she should have been banned there and then... texting , selfies, dog on lap 😯 she had no clue at all, I got a bit shouty, when will it ever get to be like drink driving which does seem to be socially unacceptable at last. big bans n fines?

It doesn't need "infobloodytainment" or dogs on laps for people to not look what they're doing. I was in my car yesterday, with my son and this car just pulled out straight in front of me. I was going about 28moh down a hill, a cyclist could easily have been going the same speed. Car crawls along for 1/4mile then turns into his driveway. Purely out of interest, not to road rage, I stopped outside the drive and opened the window. "Did you actually look before you pulled out in front of me?" I ask. I get a load of mouth from this fat old idiot about how (and this amused my kid) I was "hammering" down the road "leaning on the horn". This guy had absolutely no clue how fast I was going or where I was, because he DIDN'T LOOK. There were no distractions in his battered old Astra apart from his fat, grubby, battered old lump of a wife.
Put that on yer Panorama. 😆

I didn't watch it but they probably have a point about infotainment systems. I work for a car company and the next model is going to be heavily marketed on its "connectivity" and "social media apps". Basically you're going to be spending more time fannying around with buttons than actually watching where you're going.

Expect this kind of tech to be on even the most basic models in the near future.

Indeed they do, but the documentary was called "Drivers who kill", not "What distracts drivers?".

The program was crap. I particularly liked the undercover cop in the HGV saying how all the other drivers talking on phones were dangerous. At one point he was looking into the cab of another HGV for at least 12 seconds at 60mph whilst talking on his hand held TETRA radio. Surely that is just as dangerous!!! Oh, and he wasn't even wearing a seatbelt either.

One rule for the public and another for the police it seems.

PS. I do not condone talking on the phone whilst driving.

The thing is, drivers can kill because they are distracted by the gadgets. It is not the biggest reason, but it is a growing one. Until we have self driving cars, it will get worse.

However, unless the programme was calling for the gadgets to be banned, sounds like it wad a complete waste of airtime.

Did the presenter drive along while looking to the left into the camera, in the way that they so often do?

I remember when the BBC used to actually bother with proper journalism, and produce worthwhile, challenging, and well researched documentaries and current affairs programmes

In other words: the very polar opposite of that shite last night. Completely directionless meanderings, which could have been summed up in two sentences

Cars now have more 'stuff', but updating your Facebook status while driving probably isn't the best idea. Don't worry though, if you kill someone you won't get done for it

So, with all this oh so clever technology shite that you're not allowed to use whilst driving - duh, make it disable when the car is moving!
The self-legislating industry won't go for that will they. Maybe a few people have to die first. Make it cyclists eh, cos they don't matter.

Oh, and he wasn't even wearing a seatbelt either.

Not all HGVs are fitted with them - if theres one fitted you have to wear it but many don't have them. Non of the LGVs that used to drive had them fitted.

One rule for the public and another for the police it seems.

HGV's don't always have seatbelts, as there's no crumple zone there's not much point holding the drivers dead body in position while the rest of the 40ton trailer compresses the cab into whatever it just hit. Same for busses.

And his radio was hands free, so not illegal.

Did the presenter drive along while looking to the left into the camera, in the way that they so often do?

They made a point of showing the car on a flatbed for the "driving allong looking at the camera" bits. Makes you wonder how much of Top gear is actualy them driving.

Didn't see it but was there any mention of people who stick the ****nav right in the middle of their field of vision? Something that size a foot in front of your face will hide a good number of cars and cyclists.

My pet peeve. Supplemented with the people who have it on full brightness at night

Purely out of interest, not to road rage, I stopped outside the drive and opened the window. "Did you actually look before you pulled out in front of me?"

Someone pulled out on me on the roundabout at the foot of my road last week, he seemed to think my slightly raised voice was more unacceptable than his dangerous driving.

I don't think gadgets cause distraction exactly. I think terrible attitudes to driving allow distraction and other dangerous stuff, and gadgets are just one place where it leaks out. Probably we'd be safer without them but it's all a symptom

I was stuck behind a Yaris the other day that was using an Ipad stuck in the screen as a SatNav.

It was a new, British registered, left hand drive HGV so I would be very surprised if it didn't have a seatbelt.

He was holding the radio up to his mouth and keying the PTT button so not hands free.

Maybe a few people have to die first.

You might want to google Ford Pinto memo to understand the importance of people dying to the car industry

What are you talking about "left hand drive"??!
He wasn't bloody driving, which is why I said he was seated on the left.
