Mate in Ocean Grove, Vic, went to the local supermarket yesterday and they were giving away 3 bog rolls per customer. Could do with that here.

I have been stocking up to at least have a separate two week stash of food. The best way to do this is to do it gradually. The main reason I have done this is because my partner is a nurse and also celiac, and I fear what the NHS will be asking of her in the next few months, since she is an outstanding nurse.
Whilst I have no doubt there will be enough food, it’s the getting it to our house that concerns me. We only loved to this area of uk a year or so ago, and her close by family is on the risk groups.

Call me paranoid but at least this is one thing less to worry about in what was already a terribly stressful 2020 for us.

Not been panic buying here.

But I have been panic baking and cooking, to fill the freezer with food (from goods we already had in the larder cupboard).

It's been annoying to go to my bakery to buy my normal loaves, to find no bread - twice.
I then decide to toddle to the health food shop, to buy flour and yeast to bake my own bread - non of those products in stock (shop owner who I know well, says he's only getting 70% of his orders delivered).
I walk into Iceland supermarket and a lot of the bits and bobs I buy through the week are there, but many shelves empty.

Hubby has had a stomach bug since Saturday and we've been one of the few families actually needing loo roll. I couldn't buy any in a supermarket but I found the recycled type in the health food shop, which comes in packs of 4. Will have to go out shortly and get more.

SiL is a corporate lawyer, deals with selling restaurant chains etc, said some of her wealthier clients are absolutely elated at the thought of all the cheap business purchase opportunities coming along. Ofcourse all of this has already been written about (eg Vol 3 of 'Das Kapital' and in Naomi Klein's 'The Shock Doctrine') but remember this system thrives on screwing others.
I'm dreading when my mates around here get laid off. They're all loosely or self-employed, with kids and rent to pay for, they are about to experience even more brutality of this system and they certainly won't be in a position to panic buy.
I can't quite believe that yesterday BJ said the government is here to protect businesses, not people. Plus they're offering loans not grants, make the poor pay! Chickens roost.

just been to Aldi to get the weekly shop that we attempted at the weekend but couldnt get half the stuff needed for the little one.

Was able to get everything on the list except dried pasta (so bought from the mountain of fresh pasta) and also no fish pie mix.

Managed to get nappies and bog roll

and yesterday the chemist came up trumps with calpol and baby vits

thats us sorted for the week......

Out of eggs around these here parts.

Vaccines are made using eggs. Can but hope.

Mind you, local (big) shop also low on bacon. Maybe 14 days worth of fry ups is a workable hoarding tactic.

Survived Tesco. Plenty of empty shelves and freezers, no baked beans fgs. Greengrocer tomorrow and hopefully they'll have some eggs.

Panic buying will subside eventually but increased demand will be here to stay as long as we are in semi lockdown.

30% of food purchased in the UK is takeaways, restaurants or pre packed sandwiches and similar. Pretty much all this food demand now needs to come from supermarkets. A few of them are looking at drastically simplifying their offerings to improve supply (like does tesco need 13 varieties of wholemeal pasta when the demand is for plain spaghetti and penne?)

Shouldn't be going there myself now because my better half has a new continuous cough and has been told by manager to self-isolate (so I now should self-isolate for 14 days), but apparently the Southampton supermarkets are being decimated. Family tried to get a few bits first thing this morning for us while getting some for themselves and despite visiting two big stores, some basic things simply weren't available at all or very limited choice.

Well, a week on from my starting this thread and we have just completed our regular mid-week online shop with probably 50% of our regular items not available at all or only with unsuitable alternatives (ie, no plain tuna so suggesting 'tuna flakes infused with almond milk, honey and croutons' as a replacement which won't pass the 10 yr old taste test).

I did manage to get some toilet paper though (and it was a quite big pack) so I got that even thought we may be able to last until next week with what we have at the moment (although with two children that I fully expect to be at home as of Friday, we'll get through much more).

I am relieved we stocked up a little more on things like chopped tomatoes, pasta and potatoes just in case we still can't get those items next week.

Our weekly shop this evening, others have said most of the stuff you order isn't turning up. So fearing that thought I'd head to Costco when it opened to grab some more stuff just in case.

I got there 5 mins after opening. Queue was from the entrance, the whole length of the warehouse, and most the way along the side of the car park. Looked like they were restricting entry.

Didn't even try to get in, but we've probably got a weeks worth of stuff left, and if its like that every time you try a supermarket I'm not sure what to do. To add to that I have fussy young kids who are a pita with food. Possibly this might starve that out of them.

I’m all for having shopping hours for the elderly and vulnerable etc, but from what I’ve seen in the shops (whilst popping in to buy stuff for lunch) it’s the younger pensioners who are panic buying during the morning/daytime leaving bugger all for those who are in work who can only do their shopping at evenings and weekends

Went to Sainsbury's today to get some milk and fruit juice - no milk on the shelves whatsoever. Not even skimmed! Are people that desperate they're buying skimmed?
So, walked over the road to Aldi - all the different milks available and plenty of them. Maybe I just timed it right after a delivery or maybe people are assuming that becuase one shop is out then all of them must be.

I was also told this morning that the beer shelves were empty. That made me panic! Thankfully it wasn't true though.

The National Trust propertied are currently sitting on (pun slightly intended) thousands of Easter eggs. As they’re closed none of the Easter egg hunts are going ahead. Hopefully they’ll be given away to good causes

The confectionary aisle is pretty bare though. once the high density low cost chocolate is gone people will switch.

Nightmare for home workers. If I open a twix, I'll eat it and the rest of the pack can sit safely in the cupboard until tomorrow. Open an easter egg and it will all be gone that day.

So to supplement the shop with all its missing items, I nipped into Lidl on the way back from picking up an office chair for my home working and it's cleared out although I did manage to get some porridge oats and golden syrup (which we couldn't get from Tesco) so when the kids are home from school they have something to do (they love baking and their latest fad is making flapjack).

Just been for some toothpaste at Aldi there was none.

Loads of fresh veg and fruit but no meat, I bought garlic, ginger, veg oil and a loaf as that’s all I needed. I’ll get some toothpaste when people stop panicking.

It's milk today. There were about six pints of full fat in ASDA, about the same of the other two in Tesco.

I give it till Monday before there's a run on petrol. Y'know, just as we're all being told not to go anywhere.

Local coop cleaned out for everyday stuff. Popped in there after going to chemist. They are only allowing 4 people in at a time (good stuff) and at the attached doctors surgery you have to wait at entrance to be seen by triage before you go in. Again, reassuring to see.

On the other hand, woman in co-op coughing into her hands repeatedly (wearing latex gloves, like that helps) before serving people and "the young" walking around in groups like nothing is happening.

Email just now from Tesco:

From Thursday 19 March we will start to implement the following changes:

To ensure more people have access to everyday essentials, we are introducing a storewide restriction of only 3 items per customer on every product line, and removing multi-buy promotions.
In order to allow Tesco colleagues to focus on stocking shelves, helping to provide the essential groceries you are looking for and to avoid waste, we will close all meat, fish, deli counters and salad bars.
To be able to ensure our stores are clean, that we can replenish stock, and allow our colleagues to rest, we will change our trading hours with all stores closing at 10pm.
To ensure we are doing everything possible to reduce the risk of infection for both our customers and colleagues, we will be introducing some distancing measures at the checkout and, to make it swifter, invite customers who can, to pay by card.
To help free up slots for the more vulnerable, such as our elderly customers and those who are self-isolating, we are encouraging customers who shop online or choose Click+Collect for their grocery home shopping, to prioritise shopping in-store where possible.
To ensure our more vulnerable and elderly customers can shop in-store, we will prioritise one hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning between 9-10am (except in our Express stores) and ask that you respect this.

the supermarkets implementing the rationing is a waste of time, I watched a couple @ Aldi just go back in after the other had come out and loaded up the car. I presume they trundled off to Tescos then Asda then Lidl. State controlled rationing is the only thing that can work in these circumstances otherwise the weakest in society are going to get stuffed.

I saw a good Danish solution to panic buying. Alcohol gel sanitiser on the shelf, buy one 34 Kronor (€5.50) buy a second and that one will cost 1000 Kronor (€134). There was lots of stock available and it avoids any problems for the till staff having to police shopping trolleys with the aggravation that could cause.

One good thing, is that many people are starting to cook from scratch, as they can't buy the ready meals, or many no longer go out into cafes and restaurants.
Our greengrocer was full. People queuing with at least a metre gap, baskets full of fresh produce. I'm over hearing conversations with people saying what they're going to cook and giving tips.

On the bad side I had a mouthful yesterday from 2 foul women in our local family run bakery.
The polite notice on the outside of the bakery door read: ' Inside we have hand sanitiser, so please use it'. When I went in I used it, however the chap behind didn't, so I just pointed to where it was, these 2 women turned around and shouted "he doesn't have to use it". So I apologised to the man, saying I wasn't trying to offend him, he was fine about it. The shop assistant said the women were the type that wouldn't wash their hands anyway and probably didn't care about anyone else. Rant over.

Our panic buying so far has been a big bag of rice in case of family isolation and a packet of chocolate digestives. I've eaten most of the digestives. 3 kids and next to sod all to eat in the house

Wife only ever buys what we need for the week and today is shopping day, she has gone to Sainsburys (teacher and her school was closed yesterday) only to find it doesn't open until 10 while they let OAPs in, restock, whatever else and there is already a massive queue. Reckon we might be eating some random stuff for a while but daresay we'll live. The two extremes we're seeing do my head in - this ridiculous bullshit where appeals from Supermarkets, Government etc just seem to make it worse and then the other side where people refuse to take it seriously, no attempt at social distancing whatsoever, doesn't apply to me guv, you can't tell me what to do attitude. Muppets!

Just got back from Tesco.

I happened to get lucky just as they were putting out dried pasta on the shelves. THREE KILOGRAM bags of pasta. I asked the lad stocking the shelf, "can I just grab one of those please?" and he moved out of the way, then he looked at me like I was an absolute maniac and told me "you can have up to two you know!"

Well that was a bit of a disaster, had to go to the local Sainsbury supermarket as my parents needed milk and should stay in at present, place looked like it had been turned over. About the only thing they had in any volume was milk, suntan oil and boxes of Corona lager. The booze aisle was desolate, but fortunately there was enough various IPAs to make it ok. The wine was ok as I was only really after decent whites - red wine had taken a right shoeing. CBA’ed with Easter eggs

Tis a good choice that Heart and Soul. Me and and a mate were drinking and had a little competition to see who and how many people at the pub, we could underhandedly get to sing the lyrics to cheesy 80's hits, T'Pau - Heart and Soul was obviously a must!

Went to Aldi last night for the big weekly shop. Stock levels were pretty good - plenty of fresh fruit, dairy products, veg, frozen foods and fish strangely. The meat and bread sections were a bit low but still a choice left. Spent about £70, had to substitute a couple of items but nothing out of the ordinary.

Aisle of dreams looking well stocked - I wonder if people have cut back on purchases of waffle irons and hot tubs with all the uncertainty?

The only item that I'd normally buy but haven't been able to has been flour. We make our own bread both in a breadmaker and handmade sourdough, probably use a kilo per week.

The toilet paper panic buy is a weird one - two weeks ago we were down to our last roll, the only packs my wife could find were 18 roll packs, the 9-packs had sold out. I worked it out that the 18 rolls would last us between 16 & 20 weeks.

Talking to staff in the local Co-op, it seems they are short of delivery drivers so that's affecting stocking.

Surely there must come a time when people have enough ? Where are they putting it all ? How much can you actually need ?

I went yesterday and the only thing i couldn't find that i wanted was GF Pasta and flour. I've started on a GF diet this week and was trying to buy everything i needed for it. Most stuff was fine, but pasta and flour were a big fat no. I'll try the farm shop later but it's not urgent as i got plenty of chickpea type stuff and lentil stuff. But wanted to try making some real bread as i'm sure the GF Pitta i bought will be garbage lol.

One of our staff went and checked a few neighbors on her street yesterday. One of them commented that they had turned the dining room into storage, and that they had bought too much fresh as it was all going off....! FFS.

Went to Tesco at 6am this morning (now the 24h ones have switched to opening then to allow them to restock properly overnight). Seems everyone else had the same idea, security guards were limiting people going in. I actually got there at 6:10am and some people were already leaving struggling to carry 2 giant packs of tp each (thankfully Tesco limiting people to two of each). Still pretty low stock on a lot of stuff (there was actually plenty of tp though), got milk & eggs which is pretty much all I went for. No paracetamol but that was going to be my only 'just in case' purchase so not bothered.

Hopefully another week of this and people will have calmed down...

We've been to Tesco this morning for our weekly shop, got there just after 6am and it was heaving. Couldn't get rice, tomato puree, most of the tinned beans gone, soup aisle practically empty, pasta the same.

Speed at the little coop on the way home and that was the same. We were having curry tonight, doesn't really go with pasta 😁

Having to shop for Mum & Dad as he's high risk - gonna try and do smaller shops more often than a big bang. Local market still on so got most bits from there today for them and the local butchers. He tells me they'd taken 150% of a weeks usual takings at close last night and Fri/Sat are their busiest days!
Hopefully messages like this will start hitting home to folk soon, but it's more hope than expectation.

I feel quite lucky, as I live in a place with independent shops. All these shops are now doing deliveries or collection points manned by local volunteers.

Just really getting wound up with the 'none believers'. The one's that clearly aren't washing their hands, using hand sanitisers and not social distancing. They are incredibly selfish, foolish idiots.

Asda and Waitrose this morning were normal, peaceful even (they'd turned the music off in Asda, presumably to set the tone, but thank **** for that) and stock levels were fine except for TP, pasta and eggs. I can only assume that everyone's simultaneously developed both lactose intolerance and a taste for pasta carbonara.

Very civilized in M&S Matlock this morning - a few gaps but plenty of food on the shelves.

Fruit and veg was low, but the most baffling thing is there is a fruit and veg stall not 20 yards away from their front door and they have piles of the stuff! 🙂

I just bought a portable bidet, bog roll issue solved. Used it today, can recommend

Yeah, they're great eh. I've got one too.

As ever, the panic buying is fuelled by the media(and this thread)

Every day the message is repeated throughout the day that supermarkets are running out of stuff, fighting in the aisles, people can't get basic essentials, nurses crying on the telly etc. It's no wonder that the response to that is to panic buy really. Human nature innit.

Don't know what the answer is as the news sure as hell ain't going to stop pushing the message home.

Luckily when I went, there was still plenty of balsamic glaze.

😐 Hopefully we come back to some normality in the coming weeks.

I was dreading a trip to Waitrose this morning having seen the pictures of queues and fighting. Turned out there were more staff than customers in the shop and the shortages were incredibly specific - pasta, tinned tomatoes, baked beans, eggs, milk limited to 1 per customer, flour - but everything else available. I find the milk one very odd - the cows are still producing it at the same rate so there isn’t a shortage in supply, it doesn’t keep so there’s no point in stockpiling, what on earth are people doing with it?
