Having given the new roughcast on our extension plenty of time to dry out (2 years 😏), I’m about to paint it.

I’ve got my Sandtex trade masonry paint, but no stabiliser. Bloke in the paint shop said not to bother on new roughcast, just do a mist coat. Someone else, a builder friend, has told me to use it. Online advice can be found to support both opinions - that its neither necessary or wise to put it on never-before-painted roughcast, vs you need to put it on 🤷🏻‍♂️

What would STW DIYers do?

No real need for stabiliser on new work as it's meant for binding down old chalky friable surfaces.
Thinned first coat onto the rough cast after it's had a good clean/dust down. If you can get hold of some add 'owatrol eb' (emulsabond) to your first thinned coat.

Is it roughcast or harled?

Harling would a right pain in the arse

I had two new patches of roughcast mixed with old painted roughcast.
Like you I was cautious so left it a good while. 😉
I did just a mist coat, but did find I needed a extra full coat on the new areas to even out the colour.

I’m not sure what the difference is to be honest, I’ve only ever heard of it referred to as roughcast.

I emailed the builder and he said a mist coat would be the way to go.

Harling is a more traditional with lime in it usually. I thought.

Aye maybe. I always thought it was

- render - smooth
- roughcast - cement with little stones mixed in and flung on together
- pebbledash - clean stones flung on after wet render has gone on

?

Ah right, mine’s definitely roughcast then.

Harling ruins your football when you are playing one touch.

Its ruins saddles for bike leaning.

And it hurts like a bastard if you brush against it.
