Plenty of surface rust on the suspension linkages on the car. If I were to go over them with a wire brush, is there any paint I can slap on to protect it a bit more? Cosmetics not important ofc.

Have a look on here;

good discussion on products and techniques - they have a number of 'how tos' on their site worth having a look round.

Hammerite rust cure. Looks like milk, but turns rust into a hard black surface that is well protected from further rust. I have used it for years and even if you use other coatings on top, this reacts with the rust and turns it into a protective hard layer that is durable.

make sure whatever you use is safe on rubber. Its one thing getting rid of rust, but no good if you perish your boots, bushings etc.

Only one product and that's vactan anything other is rubbish.

It's used by the American navy and plenty of other ocean liners so it must work...and it works on my classic VW

Hardly worth it unless you just want it to look nice. The rubber bushings or ball joints will fail before a suspension arm rusts through.

On vintage bikes I use Kurust then various metal paints depending on the colour I'm after.
Seems to work ok.

Rockhopper - I am changing bushings. At £90 ish for a new arm or a less than a tenner for a bush it makes sense to keep the old ones. When taking them off the car the amount of flaking paint was alarming so I went out and bought the paint.

However once cleaned up it was clearly just surface related so thinking about it this morning maybe I'll just return the paint.

I was about to agree with rockhopper. The suspension isn't going to rust through any time soon.

(I'm assuming it's not a TVR).
