I have bought a new Indian made petrol tank for my classic BSA. Its OK quality. Its chrome but needs to be part painted leaving chrome sides. Original tanks were not polished on the areas to be painted so had a rough surface for the paint to adhere to.
So my questions are:Â
Will just sanding the chromed surface be enough to allow paint to adhere or do I need an etch primer? Â
Previous attempts at painting a tank have failed as spilt petrol softened the paint and ruined it. What DIY paint is petrol proof?
Thanks
You can sand chrome, but it's tough.
DIY-stuff is probably resistant at best, but you can buy a fuel proofer in aircraft model shops
Etch primers are for bare metal. Maybe look at a different primer like a 2 part epoxy primer ?
So we have to breath in all your shitty old motorbike fumes?
They should be banned from public places.
I think that's how it goes right? 🤣

Oh its worse than that. Its a 1960 bike so pre any emission controls. its a mobile environmental crime 🙂

You're a monster.
No - its a BSA not a ducati 🙂
and its beautiful. Â
TJ, sorry I don't know much (just ride scabby bikes;), but do recall seeing a video from Henry Cole (you may not like his style;) and here is a link (see below) to the finished tank, look back or search for the painting part, they covered prep and masking, the tank was fully chromed first, then painted by a paint shop and they show the stages, fyi.

OK I just found it, ITVx "The Motorbike Show" series 8 episode 5 they chrome and paint towards end of the show, enjoy!
Sorry no link, you'll have to find and log in ITVx.
