Painting in virtual reality? I don’t know why but for some reason it never occurred to me that this is a thing. As a painter myself it’s ridiculous that I didn’t think of this before - but- mind blown. Okay the textures are very primitive at this point - but what fun?? I can’t even believe how much fun this would be 🙂

Any other virtual reality things that I’m missing out on? Mountain biking for instance? Kayaking? Virtual surgery? And far are we away from virtual reality graphics looking more like Unreal 5?

(From 4min 50s:)

‘ How often in your lifetime will a new medium show up?’

Imagine one day maybe purchasing virtual paintings - paintings that you can walk around in? At which point surely it becomes a sculpture? But not quite - Because it’s a blending of two dimensions and three dimensions possibly a kind of fourth dimension regarding fully-immersive elements such as real-time lighting, sound, touch/haptic feedback or more… 🤯

Flying spitfires, driving racing cars and piloting space ships.

My first proper dogfight against a human adversary was intense enough to give me the shakes afterwards.

correction:

How far are we from VR graphics looking more like/using something such as Unreal 5?

@sobriety I’ve been aware of VR flight-simulators and can just imagine what it’s like in a (hardware?) cockpit with the addition of VR headset - must be insane? - but how much of it depends on the believability of the graphics in such a scenario?

You can use UE for VR today.

The issue is you don’t just need to render a small number of pixels filling a small rectangle in front of you (the screen) but rather your entire field of view.

I think next gen - i.e. The Intel 13th gen/AMD Zen 4 CPUs paired with 4000-series RTX GPUs - will be good enough for that.

how much of it depends on the believability of the graphics in such a scenario?

Having played standard Quest 2 VR games as well as linked to a decent-spec PC for things like Elite: Dangerous, Star Wars: Squadrons and MS Flight Sim, my mind is more than willing to suspend disbelief. Deep down I know I'm sat in my house looking like King of the Nerds, but it 100% feels like I'm protecting a stolen Star Destroyer from endless Imperial fighters whilst it repairs its hyperspace engines.

@p7eaven

Here's an example of IL2 Sturmovik Great Battles in VR with at least some of the shiney stuff turned on

Youtube doesn't really do it justice though, graphically it's good enough* that my 4 year old niece was trying to reach out and touch things when we popped the headset on her as she wanted to "fly through a cloud". It's also good enough that I sometimes try to shade the sun with my hand, before having to remind myself that that won't work! Having ones plane catch fire is pretty intense as well, as is the world war one combat.

*I'm running a 9th gen intel, with a 3080 gpu to drive a valve index headset at 70ish frames per second, with most settings maxed out (apart from anti aliasing, as that eats the graphics card and reduces my ability to spot distant aircraft)

I dread to think what the next generation of graphics cards and headsets will be like in terms of cost and power draw!

The immersion comes more from matching physical actions to the virtual ones than the graphics.

e.g playing games where you “walk” without a joystick feels very weird, but playing a gladiator combat game or a racing sim with a wheel is great regardless of the graphics.

I’m quite sceptical it will take off as an artistic medium any time soon just because of the barriers to access but it’s certainly cool what some people are doing with it.
