We have a fireplace in our lounge that has a brick surround that has been build out from the wall one brick deep - (3-4 inches) with the usual tiled hearth and wooden mantel.
We're going to paint the wall that it is on in a flat matt colour.
My question is, can I paint the brick fireplace surface as well, in the same colour and then still use the fire? I'm not interested in painting the firebox or hearth for obvs reasons but will the brick fireplace itself be ok to paint in the same colour without burning off or gassing me with some horrible fumes?
I'm keen to use the fireplace still as I get quite cheap wood and I'm too tight to put a woodburner in that room at the mo.
I grew up with open fires with brick type surrounds, they can get pretty hot. I'd paint a loose brick and place it near the fire and see what happens. Then make a decision.
That’s a good idea.
