It seems like my summer hols will be spent with my step-daughter in Paignton. Im aware it has lovely coast, but whats the riding like? One of my daughters will want to mtb. We live in snowdonia so like singletrack and trail centres. We also like gravel rides and bivvy overnighters.
Is there this sort of riding in eady striking distance? Are there any links etc?
Thanks in advance
Ian

Dartmoor round Princetown or on the east side round Lustley Cleave is good. MBR killer route is fun as is the route from Haytor to Hounds Tor and Grimspound. You can also wild camp on Dartmoor. Alternatively there is Haldon Forest Trail Centre at Exeter and Scadson Woods in Paignton itself for some downhill fun.

If you are trying to road ride out of Paignton look for routes up the Dart on either side.
Problem is Totnes is the bridge so all routes converge here. If you can get through then back lanes to Buckfast then trails up on to Dartmoor. The problem with the narrow lanes is the locals use them to get around during the summer so lots of fast traffic on narrow blind lanes. I used be a local.

Riding up on to Dartmoor is good from Buckfast and you might even be allowed to take a bike on the steam train Kinswear to Buckfast?
For Dartmoor itself Princetown appears to be the epicenter with a good pub chippies and cafe.
The main route is the southern loop using the old railway line to Burrator then round and back to Princetown. Very busy route often referred to as the M5 or you can just go exploring.
Be prepared for some big hills if trying to ride up to Dartmoor.
Bovey Tracey might be a good start point as well.

edit if you google up the Plymouth Minehead off road route that crosses Dartmoor so you might be able to use part of that and there is a road tour of Dartmoor that goes right round.

Haldon Forest is less than 30 mins drive from Paignton. Not quite up to the standard of the Welsh trail centres but worth a visit...

Scadson bike park is between Paignton and Cockington and is a good starting point.

There’s various bits of riding around Brixham/Kingswear but it’s more old school Xc than anything exciting.

Dartmoor has plenty of stuff - there are a variety of routes available online.
