Does anyone have a foolproof technique for getting a dressing to stay in place on a grazed knee? Not moving for 48 hours is sadly not an option.

The fluid that’s leaking out is like the xenomorph blood from the Alien movies, and is dissolving the adhesive of any plaster stuck over it.

Hypafix tape from the pharmacy.

Then just make sure the surrounding skin is genuinely dry before using the tape to fix down the dressing.  It'll stay.

Can you just staple it to a nice fleshy bit of muscle?

Or if you're a woose use duct tape / insulating tape / 3m mircopore tape wrapped around the whole leg?

Smear the graze with vaseline or something similar.

Before applying any any super sticky tape, shave the surrounding parts of your leg - I'm wincing thinking about removing such a dressing when I was 16, gravel rash due to my dad dropping my new motorbike with me as pillion.

Can you use something  like a Velcro neoprene secured knee support to hold it in place, or stretchy type fitting with Velcro type adjustable fasteners etc.

Ps me and a mate wore shorts to work and went dressing free after a rather competitive football game on sandy Astro.

With unfortunate but relevant experience of knee injuries, I can recommend either using big surface area adhesive dressings:

https://medicaldressings.co.uk/mepore-self-adhesive-dressing/
Boots do something similar in smaller quantities

or buy some tubigrip and cut some that goes above and below the knee and that holds the dressing in place

Ductape and if that doesn’t do it, zip ties.

Would one of those giant jubilee clips work?

Hydrocolloid dressings! They’re amazing!

Have tried, but they can’t cope with my knee flexing, and fill up with sticky goo before falling off. 😕

The graze lower down is healing nicely under a hydrocolloid dressing though, going through the stage where you get a different creepy pattern on the gel pad every day.

Lol at Poopscoop!

How big is the area, and what dressing type have you got on it now? You can get ones which have an ingredient which dries up excess ooze.

You could ask if the practice nurse at your GP surgery could help out. They are masters of this kind of shit.

I've used mepore with good results - maybe try a pair of shorts and leaving it open for a while before dressing it.

nasty things though... hope it heals quickly.

Ladies’ stockings!

20% of at Lovehoney at the moment I believe.

They also sell those Bluetooth connected vibrating ball things that could be placed on the wound to aid healing and just generally make him feel loved.

For bonus points, have your SO apply dressing and tubi grip while leaning out of the car window as you ride the bike down the road

If you don't need to stop the ooze from matting to your trousers because; work. Then clean it with a mild antiseptic and leave the dressing off for as long as you can and wear shorts. If you do need to put a dressing on because; co-workers then an alginate or hydrocolloid.

Hard to say without seeing it, but based on keeping patches put under chainsaw trousers that are quite heavy on the knees my normal go to would be big hydrocolloid or medipore that is 50mm bigger all round than the wound with tubigrip over the top. If that didn't work it would be on to Israeli bandage that would also act as a knee brace to stop the knee flexing.

For just not sticking to the bed covers 🤭 you can get spray on dressings but be warned, aerosol and antiseptic in them may be as bad as how you got the wound.

A lollipop stick!?

That's a luxury reserved for DIY appendix removal round this way.

Tsk, some people don't know they're born.

Be wary of duct tape (would be my choice normally if all else.failed). I used it to keep electrodes on for a 48 holter monitor where I needed to exercise and had the most horrendous sores and rashes afterwards. Probably not so irritating on a knee though.

Not quite the same as not knee but...
Medics considered skin graft.
By God it was unpleasant after a few days.

should have had a hydrocolloid on that - it would have produced litres of gunk but would have healed better

Well, thanks to the advice on here I think I've got it fixed. There's now a hydrocolloid patch with a Tegaderm dressing over the top for waterproofing, and the whole lot is fixed in place with the Hypafix sticky tape. First night in a week that it hasn't leaked and gone stinky, and I even managed to make it down the stairs without hopping from step to step. 🙂

If you aren't already, apply it with your knee bent rather than leg straight, then when you flex you're compressing rather than stretching it.

and fill up with sticky goo before falling off. 😕

That's what they're supposed to do?

Yeah, but if the oozing bloody fluid makes it to the edge, they fall off early and you wake up with your wound epoxied to the duvet cover. There is something distinctly creepy about hydrocolloid plasters when they work though.

Cohesive bandages are good for keeping things in place. Had some left over after using it on the dog. Handy stuff.

A tegaderm patch, but bigger than you think you need, and applied with the joint half bent. Let it sit for a little while before you move. Bloody love this stuff, there's been times when I've been like 2% tegaderm by body area. A wee tactical shave can be a good idea too.

I love colloid plasters and similiar, they are so excellently disgusting.

My go-to has always been 3M Micropore tape with gauze dressing, it’s the only adhesive tape I’ve found that really sticks well and doesn’t start to peel off once the affected area starts to move around.

Although I once managed to slice right down the edge of my thumbnail with a sharp knife, and discovered all I had with me where I was camping was a tube of superglue and a roll of loo paper.
When the makeshift bandage finally fell off, there wasn’t a mark to be seen.

Not something I’d necessarily recommend, but under the circumstances, needs must - I now make sure I’ve got a first aid kit to hand, with micropore tape in.
