So, looking for a 3 seasons insulated jacket that packs down small.
My current Montane (not sure of the model, it's primaloft and has fleecy stretchy side panels under the arms), and Alpkit (again, not sure of model, but it's Down, intermediate warmth) each take up most of the space in eg my hip-pack, and so I'd like something of similar warmth, but which packs down smaller.
Anything to recommend?
Primaloft or Down?
Thanks
I think you are being a little over optimistic with your hippack requirement!
It has to be down, and I'd normally say Alpkit, but I've just replaced my Alpkit jacket with one of of Sportspursuit for half the price.
storage pocket bib shorts with a visible lump on your back :0) may be an option..

Cheers - got a link?
So, it's intended use is not so much to use whilst cycling, but post-ride pint, bike-packing/bivvying, Spring through to Autumn, when the weather is perhaps not very predictable.
The Endura GV500 Insulated jacket gets good reviews, and packs into it's own pocket.

Use a 'frame' type bag and stuff it in there?
I got a Primaloft Silver Gilet from GAP of all places, half price in the January sales a few years ago. It's so toasty. Feels a lot warmer than my northface thermoball coat (although not on the arms obvs!)
Fit inside a Hip pack, LOL. Moon on a stick.
Like someone else said you're looking for a down jacket from somewhere like PHD designs and it'll cost you over £500. Unless your willing to spend that sort of money forget it and just get yourself a backpack with more storage space.
@footflaps - would that the be the Filoment from Alpkit?

Rapha hip pack - you can store the jacket on the outside with their bungee retainer.
I don't know what size hip packs people are using, but both my current insulated jackets fit into mine! (Not at the same time)
However, this thread has helped give me a reality check that I'm not likely to find anything substantially more packable than what I already have.
I have a Mountain Equipment down jacket that fits into a hip pack, it was £120 in the sale - it's not that warm Vs an average 500-700g down jacket but for the mininal weight (well under 200g) and pack size it goes on every bikepacking trip I do. Not sure which model or whether it's still available but you don't need to spend £500 as suggested for something that can match a light primaloft and stretch panel top.
I got a down jacket from Decathlon, not sure it's 3 season but it packs small and is warm..recommended.
This one I think

I use one of these when necessary:
Packs very small:

I use a Montane Prism for post ride/pub/bikepacking camp duties. It easily fits into my Ortlieb hip pack.

I've got the same jacket. Wear it everyday. It's really good for the money.
It can pack down quite small in a stuff sack.
I quite like my decathlon one. It would fill a hip pack though.
I'd consider looking at Galibier - they have a synthetic insulated jacket aimed at the bike packing crowd but still going to be bulky
Isobaa wool one? I have one and like it.

Uniqlo Ultralight Down. They don’t leak bits of down all over everything like the Decathlon ones do, and I have both, so I know whereof I speak, they will pack into quite a small bag, which I can and have stuffed into a biggish jacket pocket, and they’re £70.

The answer is probably Decathlon. But I have a Rab Alpine microlight which has become my bike packing / winter climbing jacket. It's packable and pretty warm.
You see them a lot in every day settings (high street, cafes) and have been around years so maybe available on eBay/vinted.
Down still wins for warmth to weight, but I've been pretty impressed by Primaloft Gold - I'm leaning that way for a lot of things because of the better tolerance to water.
I've got a GV500, which would fit in a hip pack (probably not leaving much room for anything else, though) - but I've not really used it yet, so can't recommend or condemn it.
This may not be warm enough, but these pack down very small and are surprisingly warm for their size/weight. Not a down jacket though…
patagonia nanopuff pullovers also compress fairly well if you want something synthetic. Not sure if they still do the po version?
I'd be really surprised if OMM didn't do something that fits your bill.
I have a Patagonia Nanopuff jacket and vest, both pack down small into an internal zip pocket and are deceptively warm.
Nanopuff as above is a lot warmer than it has any right to be.
Anyone used/got any of the Galibier offerings? In particular, the Liberte Insulated Packable jacket?
https://www.galibier.cc/product/liberte-insulated-packable-jacket/
Another Patagonia nanopuff user here. Mine's getting a bit ancient now but still does the job. It never gives that warm cozy feeling of a down jacket, but also manages to keep the cold out way more than such a small pack size top should
I got a down Arcteryx cerium jacket in their sale, properly warm, packs down to 200mmx100mm and weighs 300g, so light you don’t know you’re wearing it.
Bit of a conflict , but if you want small and warm you want down, but a lightweight down jacket might not be so good for standing around in piddling rain as a primaloft jacket. Guess you'll have to see if a nanopuff with hood fits in your hip bag
I bought a packable insulated gilet to carry for mountain summits, etc. and think I've taken it riding once in about six years.
When it's gonna be cold, I just wear my hybrid insulated jacket instead (Madison DTE), as it vents so well there's no real penalty for wearing it throughout the ride.
Down also doesn't stand up so we'll to being constantly compressed. For the type of garment that might live scrunched-up in a pack for a long time I prefer synthetic.
how does the nanopuff size up ? 42 chest and 34 waist and look like I'm between a medium and large

Mine is my most favourite cycling jacket, but it's a bit niche - only has insulation on the front - not for standing around. Also sized according to Albion's anorexic whippet model.
+1 for the decathlon jackets being great, mine lasted years until i snagged it on a thorn. Lost a bit of it's original warmth but it was rarely washed with the correct expensive down-wash stuff. Just replaced it with a Filoment because it could go in with the cycle2work!
As others have said, if you want something that packs down smaller than that then you're in a non-overlapping Venn diagram of insulation that packs down the smallest (down) and insulation that tolerates being packed down like that all the time (down).
Get a bigger hip pack, or accept that despite what bearded corners of the internet tell us, riding bikes round muddy hills is not fashionable, and neither are hip packs, and the two together do not in fact cancel out. Therefore get a proper backpack and pretend it's the 2000's where we all agreed that lighter bikes were better and carried the heavy/bulky stuff sensibly on our backs.
Hiya,
My two penneth worth. I love my Keela Talus jacket:
https://keelaoutdoors.com/products/mens-talus-jacket?
Packs small well made, super lite and primaloft gold. It's also great under a waterproof.
Slightly biased, my son is a designer for Keela, lol 😉

I've got that one as my general knock about Autumn/winter jacket, packs down and folds into it's own pocket so would be bum-baggable I reckon, IIRC there's a version without the hood too (might be a smidge more packable), I think there's also a down Gilet version too(?).The main advantage of Decathlon stuff is that it's pretty cheap, for something to stuff in the bottom of a pack and bumble about in the cold and wet probably get wet and occasionally snag (mine's got several patches now) ~£50 is fair, if I'd spent £100+ on something nice I'd maybe think twice before taking it, but that's just me.
I have a lovely red Montane Prism that is a little big on me, size L, and therefore has only been worn a couple of times walking the dog.
Post up if anyone wants it, say £50 posted ?
I've got an ultralight down made by Macpac that squishes down to about a coke can size. Probs not a great idea to store for long periods like this. Maybe holofibre would hold up better but probably be heavier.

I have that one and it's great. Packs down much smaller than in the photo. It was about the cheapest I could find that has ethically sourced down if that matters to you (it did to me).
My SO bought a nano puff >10 years ago. It still does regular duty as an extra layer that packs down nicely.
I have the Alpkit version. A bigger size than my SO’s, but I think the nanopuff packs down relatively smaller and feels warmer when I’ve done a simple hand compare.
I keep wondering about buying one but as I have the Alpkit and it’s OK I resist the urge.

i have actually bought the Patagonia one on the back of this thread as it's 30% off. I also have the Alpkit copy, the Kanyo, and having compared them side to side they are very very similar on first look.
If anyone wants the Alpkit one for a very modest second hand price let me know !
I was also thinking about the Rab Cirrus - not sure if it's the highest spec of synthetic down but saw a cirrus reviewed glowingly. Also on sale at SP.

Small only (must... Resist...) but there's a hooded version there too.
If you are willing to have grey rather than black, that Mountain Warehouse jacket is £36 this weekend with their 20% discount applied. My brother has one and he is very happy with it and it does pack down quite small
