If the reason most threads get deleted and users banned is that complaints get made, then it stands to reason that users who piss others off generally will get complaints against them more when naughty than those who don't. Fred has his share of dislikers and so I guess almost all of his trips out-of-bounds get drawn to mods' attention, hence he's banned more readily.

GW has a fairly, err, direct/abrasive style too and so maybe that counts against him in terms of getting reported. His post on the dumped thread was easy to complain about I reckon, though not actually full of really offensive words IIRC (fairly funny though - & likely untrue)

I struggle to understand why LOADS of posts get reported. I never have and probably never will report one - guess I don't take the place seriously enough

Does all this reporting really go on? Are people really so sensitive? Isn't it a bit like running to 'teacher'?

I can only ever recall reporting one post, or rather a series of them from the same poster, as they were so crass and insensitive to the OP that it defied belief.

Apparently yes, because...

I presume there is little reporting or we'd see more deleted posts (if you know what I mean) and there would be more bans.

What I find hard to take it the way that some nasty prejudiced posts are allowed to stand despite reporting from posters with plenty of previous and other posters get banned with no warning for something much less offensive

i honestly think that this roughly translates as 'i want people banned for not having my world view' rather than people getting banned for breaking the rules.

trailmonkey - there may be an element of this. However I do try to reserve it for the more blatantly racist sexist and homophobic stuff and use a fairly high threshold. Racist sexist and homophobic posts are against the rules. I try to keep some sense of perspective and only report the blatent stuff - not just the unthnking

For or against?
Personally I see all this complaining as an insecurity, OK it's a bit one sided as I don't think there's much chance of appealing against a ban, but to complain in the first place is a bit...

I reckon everyone on this thread will get banned, then it will collapse in on itself, resulting in a forum black hole, where other, even new posters will get sucked in and destroyed. This is why they close the threads before it hits the event horizon.

I've only ever complained about one post, where the hypocritical bullying had reached critical level and I'm glad I did.
I've never posted a tag as I consider them cowardly.

The worst threads on here, IMO, have been mysogynistic insults aimed at those with no opportunity to answer back.
They were pulled, but not until the OP had received a dose of his own, and he seems to have calmed down a bit recently.

Yes let's keep some sense of perspective - racist, sexist, and homophobic posts, are extremely rare on here.

And if I feel bothered enough to do anything about them, then I challenge them - I don't report them.

That's what I do in 'real life' ...... where banning isn't an option. Mark keeps banging on how this is just like real life, well in real life I don't rely on bans when having to deal with racism, sexism, and homophobia.

ernie - I assume the mods have some responsibility for the content of the site (ensuring it meets certain standards) and that without posts being reported they'd have difficulty policing it. That being the case, reporting offensive posts should be seen as helping them out?

Just like "real life" repeat offenders might expect some sort of punishment/censorship?

the mods have some responsibility for the content of the site

My comments were aimed at TJ not the mods. I was suggesting that he deals with any cases of racism, sexism, and homophobia, by challenging them - not by reporting them. I have never reported any post. I can cope with racism, sexism, and homophobia in the real world - why would it be different on here ? Although as I say such incidences are extremely rare here.

Its a not unreasonable point and I do on occasion. sometimes tho I feel the right thing to do is report it as challenging them makes no difference or ends up with a row and that without reports the mods will not know of the behaviour.

As my good lady would say, doesn't everyone just need to 'unclench' a bit...and take the forum for what it is. I really fail to see how anyone gets so upset...

challenging them makes no difference

I can't ever recall anyone making an openly racist or homophobic comment not being successfully challenged, or the poster in anyway being in a position to derive satisfaction from the outcome.

fatmax, there has been some genuine nastiness, personal abuse and bullying on here.

I've really never felt the need to report anyone's post on here, to me it seems like the policy of a schoolyard - Sir, sir! somebody said something horrid and may of made Jimmy cry

I simply ignore anything I don't like and move on. It's not like anyone is forced to read any particular post.
I don't take offence very easily and I certainly don't take offence by proxy either, there seems to be one or two posters who go around looking for something to be offended by and then making a big noise about it.
Get on with your own life would be my advice, if you were asking 🙂

As for this being real life? do me a favour.............

Well Mark claims that "this is real life" so I guess yes. Do you not agree then ?

For me it's nothing like real life, for a start, I don't dislike anyone at all on here. And yet I can't help feeling that if I met some of the punters on here in real life, I'd probably think that we were right ****ers. After all the real world's full of people that I don't like.

been banned twice, once because smurfmatthew commented on the size of my friends breasts and the second time was for posting a picture of a woman breastfeeding a cat.

the pole dancing video annoyed me as she was wearing more than most people would wear to the beach, it was a video for an arts competition (no sexual moves at all, just technical skill as she won miss pole dance UK and now teaches all over the world) and up until SM's post everyone was playing well and commenting on ability not looks.

the breastfeeding cat was an image from one of those 30p wimmins mags like 'look!' 'now!' or 'shock!', no nipple showing (it was well and truly in the cats mouth)... fair enough i suppose, somebody was obviously upset by it!

not sure why i'm typing this other than its fun to mention breasts on a friday 🙂

for posting a picture of a woman breastfeeding a cat.

😆

Reckon you can break post reporting down in to 3 camps

1. Guardians - those who see it as a responsibility to report gender sterotyping, bad language, racial abuse etc. Fair enough I suppose as long as the 'report post' button gets hit after a little bit of thought as to the context of the comment.

2. Delicates - those 'gentle' souls who are quite willing to start fights but back out of open confrontation and would rather revert to moderation to get their way. I suspect that these people have an internet persona that is quite different to how they behave in real life.

3. Axe grinders - people without a pair of fully developed testicles who decide they don't like someone and make a point of causing trouble for them.

NB. And before anyone specific gets upset, calm down - this is a general observation. You know who you are.

well you are at odds with the owners and the people who run this ...does the forum just self generate without someone having to do something in their real life ? when it was hacked was it not real for STW? Users seemed a tad annoyed as well. People have been sued for what they have written on the Internet. In what sense is it not real? You may be confusing taking it seriously and real here.

I've never reported anyone (bar spammers), I'm confident there will always be folk more upset about stuff than me.

reporting folk for being offensive I get, what I struggle with is getting reported when I am clearly having a laugh.

I mean FFS who reported my "big hitters" thread? You really need to get out more and get a life.

JY you miss my point - of course a lot of my output here is a complete waste of time aimed at amusing myself and others...but if it's not really offensive to a proper grown up then why report it?

There's more value in it to me than "pics of red frame with green wheels please" threads.

cynic-al

This is the bit you seem to find hard to understand - what you consider having a laugh can be highly offensive to others. Its not your intent that counts - its the effect upon others,

The joke I told that I got banned for is funny -and I was clearly having a laugh. However the ban was appropriate 'cos it was offensive

Threads aren't just closed or deleted for being offensive, they're closed if they going to insight arguments or deemed as trolling. They're not always reported either some we do spot the thread titles or OP can give us clues to what it's going to be like.

Right stepping into the background again on this thread.

cynic-al, it seems to me that your self-perception and how others perceive you are miles apart. You're obviously an intelligent guy - I'm sure you're perfectly nice in real life but it might be best if, before you post, you think for a second, “how is this going to be perceived by others?” If you do, and you then don't give a shit (which it seems you don't a lot of the time), then you can't whinge when you get heavily moderated. Tbh, you do ask for it a lot of the time.
