The Boy graduates Uni next month. The ceremony is at York Minster and I'm taking his mum over to attend (there's not enough spare tickets for me).

So, we'll be driving over the evening before, staying overnight, I'm billy no-mates for the morning and then we're planning on going for food/drink afterwards before driving home.

What's the best way to do this? Park 'n' ride into the centre? I'll need a hotel room within walking distance of the Minster which ideally isn't going to cripple me financially. Suggestions / tips / recommendations welcome, it's probably a decade since I last went to York and it was a daytrip.

Thanks in advance.

There is no overnight parking at the park & ride sites.

Either get the train, park in a side street & get a bus in, or get a hotel with parking (either £££ or a little out of town) & use uber to be in the right place at the right time.

First question will be where to stay/ budget. I can recommend the Grand (by the station) but it's not the cheapest. There's overnight parking at the station car park.

Another option would be the Premier Inn in Clifton, by the Dormouse. Friendly pub with decent ales, and there are regular buses down the Clifton Road into town - or it's about half an hour's brisk walk.

I've stayed at the Doubletree in York twice (once with work then actually as a leisure trip), it's a decent mid-price option.

At the other end of the uni journey, we went up to an open day recently, and stayed in the Travelodge Hull Road, a week before it shut for refurbishment. It did need it.

If (if!) it's reopen it will be brand new. Decent size carpark as well.

Pub next door, decent greek cafe 5 min down the road for a breakfast gyro, 15 min to uni, 30 min to town, or a bus.

It did the job

Minster Hotel is nice when I've stayed, walking distance to the Minster / town centre and has free parking if you book direct.

Buy some nice fudge from one of the little artisan fudge shops.

Minster Hotel booked. Perfect, thanks all. Appreciated.

£130 including parking and breakfast for two, I don't think I'm going to do better than that. The train would've been 35-40 quid.

Just wander round the city centre during your free time, it's lovely.

I've stayed at the Gillygate Pub & rooms (on bike tour) and Middletons hotel near Skeldegate with Mrs Dubs. I don't remember either of them being extortionately priced.

Well I'm taking my son to see the university at York this week, we're staying at the yha, they do twin rooms and it's walkable to city centre along the river, has a carpark too, I like to support yha when I can.

I was going to suggest Roomzzz Aparthotel on Terry Avenue but looks like you got a better and more convenient choice at the Minster Hotel.

The Christmas market starts on the 14th Nov.  It's great but can get very busy so bear that in mind if it's on when you are in York.

Doubletree is a good shout - reasonable rooms (lovely beds) and a great breakfast and pretty central.

Buy some nice fudge from one of the little artisan fudge shops.

Ere there any left? I think they are all mass-produced crap now. There used to be one near the Minster that made it all on premises (and you could watch) but I’ve not seen that for a long time.

Go to Evil Eye for a cocktail (or two).

Avoid Betty’s - they just take money off mugs for bang-average shit with the added bonus of a one-hour queue to be fleeced.

1st check if there’s any big race meetings on at the time. I used to stay in York with work a lot. Whenever there were major horse racing events it was a nightmare finding hotels.

That is a good shout- it's a lovely place and the walk (assuming the river isn't up) is lovely. It is probably a good 20 or 30 minutes to the Minster though. It does have car-parking on-site though.
