Heading down to the Pyrennes from the tunnel in a few weeks and wondered whether anyone could recommend a 1 night stopover about 4-5 hours from Calais which I'm guessing is around Le mans.

Will have a car full of luggage and maybe a bike or 2 so a safe car park is a must.

Thanks!

Do you want a scenic detour or somewhere directly on route?

If the latter, I’ve stayed in tours, nice enough but accommodation is expensive and/or crap.

i like Amboise but its a slight detour.

Don't mind a slight detour, just somewhere about 4 hours from the tunnel for a Friday evening stop over.

@pat12 anywhere in Amboise you'd recommend?

Sadly not, past couple of years we have been in the motorhome. Has an amazing campsite however. Probably not much good to you I know 😉

Stayed here on a Pyrenees trip once. Really lovely hotel and a nice town. Just south of Le Mans.

Used this place two years running and would definitely go again.

It's a sleepy little village and we were happy leaving bikes on car roof in car park which is main square outside hotel, but they'd be able to store bikes securely if you want.

We stayed in Le Mans the other year o a similar journey. It wasn’t particularly nice (a bit grim in places) and I would recommend staying outside of town.

We stayed overnight in a motel type place near Le Mans once.

The rooms were painted red !! .... GLOSS red !!!

We didn't get murdered and the staff were lovely

Vieux Moulin campsite may have fixed accommodation too. Nice restaurant last I stayed (long ago to be fair).

F1 hotels are perfectly adequate if just stopping overnight before driving on. They have triple rooms so you can manage with 2. Parking is reasonably secure but I wouldn't leave a bike outside the car, you can take it into the room. The McDonald's of hotels.

We did stay in a nice gite down that way on a farm while passing through. Not a specific recommendation but that type of place via airBnB or booking.com would work, there are loads. Middle of nowhere would be very secure.

Hotel F1 is our default answer for any french travel stopover. They have code access carpark and are dead cheap

I'd look for a campsite with a fixed tent or mobile home to rent. Might not be easy to find one that will do only one night at this time of year though. In fact if it were really me I'd throw a 2" Decathlon tent in the boot and sleep in that, or sleep in the car for a few hours, or lie down next to the car with a mosquito net over my head and sleep. You may have gathered I sleep easily anywhere and everywhere.
