My mum has made a fairly specific request for her Christmas present: an overnight bag with rucksack straps, but also normal hand/shoulder straps. I'd like to get her something stylish, and my first thought was Millican. This probably fits the bill, but £140?! I knew they wouldn't be cheap, but still. I guess the minimalist look is quite stylish, but it doesn't even look particularly special.

Any recommendations for something similar?

Thanks, but I think the rucksack straps are a must-have.

Try Alpkit, I have one of their large holdalls with handles and rucksack straps. It was fairly reasonably priced too if I remember rightly and come in different sizes

I knew they wouldn’t be cheap, but still. I guess the minimalist look is quite stylish, but it doesn’t even look particularly special.

Fjallraven does similar waxed polycotton, but arguably a but nicer and more interesting, if you like that retro-style thing - similarly expensive. The Millican stuff is decent though, I have one of the rucksacks and it's very nicely made and has some neat features for everyday use.

Osprey and Lowe Alpine do good, functional stuff, but you'd be hard-pushed to call it 'stylish', it'll do the job though. Ditto Arc'teryx, also expensive.

If you want to go beyond outdoor brands, places like John Lewis have great swathes of backpacks from people I've mostly never heard of. Just search for 'backpack'.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I thought some of my technical rucksacks were expensive, til I started looking at stylish (but technically quite basic) ones! The John Lewis, etc. idea is definitely worth looking into further, cheers.

We have a couple of Patagonia Black Hole 60l duffel bags, they sound to have the features that you want.

Had them both for around 10 years, have been very well used and still look like new.

As they look like a soft backpack when used with the backpack straps, we've always got away with them as hand luggage on flights, and never been asked to check them in on boarding when cabin baggage space gets tight.

We’ve got a couple of these in the 30l flavour, tough and functional, probably not considered stylish!

They are available in different colours too
