Overlapping jobs while on leave during notice?

If I give 3 months notice at job A and have over a month's leave to use up, is there any reason why I can't start a new job with company B during that period of leave in the notice period?

Totally different industries so no conflict there.

Obviously, I don't want to ask HR

Why not? Is it any different from having two part time PAYE jobs at the same time which I did for a few years.

The tax will be sorted out at the end of the year. Until your current job finishes you should be paying income tax on all the earnings at the new job as your allowance only apply to one job.

If your new employer is OK with it, your annual leave is for you to do as you wish, surely?

Is emergency tax still a thing? If so, brace yourself for getting hit with that until HMRC sort things out

The overlap would only be a couple of days.

Check your contract. Mine explicitly says I can't have other employment unless the company agrees.

Whether they would find out and what they could do about it if I was in breach of said contract are perhaps different questions 🙂

HMRC would likely take a few years to handle situation and guess new employer would just put you on a basic rate tax code as you would have no P45. But depending on payroll cut-offs and how quickly your old employer issues P45 it might all be fine.

Yeah, I think the only issue is that your tax code won't have transferred properly from one employer to the next, as you won't have had your P45 from the old one. That often happens even with a non-overlapping job change anyway though, if there's a delay with the P45 being produced, and it sorts itself out pretty quickly.

Which one did you go for in the end?

Not there quite yet, just trying to get my head around a conversation with the union rep who appears to be confused about who they are meant to represent.

+1

Mine agreed to it, although it was the other way around.

I had a 2x 9 day weeks work, 4x 3 days weekends, and another 9 day week booked and didn't want to cancel as they were good company to work for and the pay was very good. But that left me free for about a month of 4 day weeks before I was actually free. New company was fine with me either taking unpaid leave or using holiday for it as long as it complied with their conflict of interest policy (it did).

Really struggling to get my head around this idea of...

Not just not taking additional unpaid holiday between jobs in order to get a life....
But going so far as to have the actual jobs overlap.

Bloody norah.

Respect for having a job you like so much. I'm jealous

Seems like the obvious solution to me?

Go in to your new job and as its only two days, don't get paid but ask your new employer for 2 extra paid leave days for this year only.
