Prescription glasses user here. The prescription sunglasses are expensive for a strong precipitation espicially if you want wrap around and I have had problems with them in the past not being correct. Are all these over glasses shit? I have tried clip on and although better than nothing too much light from round the sides.
Any recommendations?
Depends - do you just mean clip-ons for regular prescription frames or something like the Rudy Project flip-up systems like Exception and Maya? I have -11 prescription and I use the Rudy Project Maya SUF frames system and quite like them. Link here http://www.rudyproject.com/technology/prescription/
My opticians have a good relationship with Rudy Project and can get them, as the UK importer has shown less interest. PM me and I can give more details if you want.
Looks interesting but I have been warned off of rimless frames for my prescription. Which the clip in bit is.
By overspecs I mean the ones that go right over normal glasses, rather than clip ons

I know that already!
not the most useful of replies I admit lack of decent shades was one of main thing that pushed me towards contacts
I have tried contacts and because I don't use them every day I find them a big hassle. I don't use them every day because my prescription with contacts is not as good as normal glasses. Ok for sports but not work....:(

Go full douche.
Get a close fitting pair of wraparound shades and wear your prescription specs over the top.*
* I have actually had to do this in the car, when my prescription sunglasses went AWOL. I now have a slightly oversized pair of cheapo £6 Tesco, Wayfarer style, sunglasses in the car which I can fit over my existing specs if needs be. Still look like a douche though.
Unless your prescription is significantly higher than mine then I'd have thought that you'd be able to get something to work. My optician regularly glazes frames for me that the manufacturer says aren't possible to do with my prescription. The Rudy Project ImpactX 2 photochromic lenses are truly fantastic and I've used them in a very wide range of light conditions all the way from night riding to high mountain bright sunlight.
I can give you some contact names/ numbers if you PM me 🙂
Another option might be the adidas range? https://www.adidassporteyewear.com/en-gb/s/technology/prescription

Quotes are £400 if I want side protection. Cheaper for what is effectively normal glasses with tinted lenses. Possible but more than I want to spend on a occasion use item that may be damaged.
-8 with astigmatism btw
I had the same problem; my prescription was so strong that nobody wanted to glaze a wraparound frame.
The answer is that there are some frames, which have the lenses in a separate subframe held in the frame. This allows you to have as strong a prescription as you like while still having a wrap around frame. Your optician should be able to find them, mine are by Shoptic but you can't find them on the web. Oh wait.... I Googled them and have just found the picture I posted on Cycle Chat:
These are varifiocal and photochromic and absolutely fantastic, in bright sunlight or at night.
There's no reason you should look a douche. I have Adidas with clip in prescription inserts. They look like cycling specs (well with tinted lenses in rather than the clear ones). The Rudy clip ins look similar. Globalti has mentioned his before and they look pretty smart. What prescription are those?
I dunno but it's quite strong. I got the same made up in really curved lenses for skiing and TBH they are rubbish but on snow you don't notice the aberrations as much as when cycling.
