Got home earlier to find Outlook 2010 won't open, and is giving the error:
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file c:\ etc etc etc mybackup.pst is in use and cannot be accessed. Close any applications/try again/restart computer etc'
I'm fairly certain Outlook wasn't using this backup file up until now, its an old backup from when I changed laptops. (it says it was last modified this morning but last accessed May 2011)
I don't seem to have a .pst file in the usual location, I only have
outcmd.dat, Outlook.NK2.old, Outlook.srs, Outlook.xml, and OutlPrnt.file
(the last two don't have an extension, but the type is xml and file).
I've done some Googling and I can't find the
scanpst.exe
utility that should be in the Outlook folder. I can't open Outlook.xml using Outlook as its not a .pst file. I've tried opening Outlook using
outlook.exe /safe
and
outlook.exe /resetnavpane
.
I haven't tried a new mail profile or reinstalling the program yet as I am starting to guess and don't want to potentially lo
ose my emails/calendar, particularly if my PC has picked up some undesirable bug from somewhere and I make things worse...
Any ideas?!
Still not cracked it 🙁
First off reboot to ensure that its not a file locking problem. Then search for Scanpst.*, it will be on the hard drive somewhere but there are a number of locations where it may be stored.
The Outlook.pst file for Office 2010 is in your My Documents folder. I think last time I asw this problem I copied the pst file and renamed it, I then opened the Mail icon in the Control Panel and specified the new file as the default mail file.
Confused somewhat here.
Wife just got home, I got sent outside to unjam the car door as it she slammed it on the seatbelt and it wouldn't lock or open. I come back inside, she has double-clicked on Outlook and, it just worked 🙄
P.S Thanks for the help...now to find the actual PST file and make a backup, just in case...
