I’m off to the Outer Hebrides next month, looking at getting the ferry from Uig to Tarbert then hopscotch as I go. More than likely will have the car with me (to use as a base/storage/shelter in real crappy weather) but mainly will be bike packing around.

So, what are your must do places to visit, eat, drink, stay, ride, climb, watch wildlife etc etc?

Go to Eriskay, walk up Ben Scrien.  There are a herd of Eriskay ponies that live wild up there during the summer months.  We spent a week there in a cottage and loved it.

Harris: Cycle the Golden Road, from Tarbert and all the way down the East coast. Then lunch at the Anchorage in Leverburgh. Return by West coast stopping at Luskentyre or Scarista beach. Harris Distillery good for food too.

Outer Isles are magic, enjoy!

I'll pop up some more southerly suggestions later.

But;

Berneray - walk a circuit of the island. Eat at the Bistro (ignore any reviews about the Lobster Pot, it has changed hands).

A cycling cape would be a good investment.

If the weather gets nasty, there's not much shelter.

I'm actually sat in Ullapool at the moment, waiting for the ferry to arrive. I wandered out to the Point to eat my haggis supper in some peace and quiet....

... and then some dolphins showed up.

Cue around 100 folk suddenly surrounding me to watch them fishing.

No wrong turns to be taken really. Only part forgiven my wife for not remembering Luskentyre until we were heading for the ferry. Will have to go back again. The bus stops / Soviet air raid shelters should get you out of the weather.

My additions to the above are Boasted and An Lanntair for food in Stornoway for food. The beach beyond the Chess men site near Ardroil.

Finally, if you are comfortable on small boats at sea, get even further away on St.Kilda. Amazing history and incredible bird colony.

That's Luskintyre in the background (on a bad day) Yeah, way overrated 🙂

Huisinis has a lovely wee beach too but its eclipsed by Treigh Mheilein, 2k further North

The West coast beaches are brilliant right along the Hebrides, especially South Uist.

But if you don't mind a bit of hike a bike

Or if you do the Urgha to Rhenigdale track, take a wee diversion down this track to Molinginish which has no road whatsoever to it.
