Our Miele 5000 Cat and Dog trips the electrics every time it's plugged in.
I think it ingested a load of dust during our house refurb tidying and it certainly got a bit warm!
Is there anything I can check/clean/do to try and get it working again before it gets chucked?
(It's been replaced full time by a very excellent Henry.... But if the Miele could hand around for occasional use it would be great)
Depending how old it is Miele will fix them for you, might be worth giving them a call.
We just replaced the filter in ours and its given it a new lease of life.
Certainly check all the filters - plaster dust is a clogger.
As per fossy, have you ever changed any of the filters, other than the bag? You can always just pop them off and see if it will work, though I'm kinda doubtful. TBH I'm not sure how you've killed it, ours just keeps soldiering on, in fact I've replaced the 'heads' as they worn out before the main unit. Though the other half has just bought a hand held shark for convenience cleaning (dog hair tumble weed on the tiled floors).
One bag cn't have fitted correctly as the dust was not going into the bag but into the bag 'cavity' and then being sucked into the filter which was clogging very quickly.
When I plug it in now there's a bang from the unit when it's plugged in. Not sure if this is the motor or the control board (probably the former as the I'd have thought the motor doesn't get any power until it's actually switched on.
yeah I'd probably be writing that one off, though you could try following one of the youtube video's to repair it, otherwise sell off the parts (assuming you have the turbo heads)
If you are mechanically adept they come to bits quiet easily including even taking the whole motor apart. Me and my daughter got ours down to a single bearing in the motor that had seized and 5 EUR later it was working again. The Miele site has an exploded view but that is only really of the big bits. To get the motor apart requires a little more imagination but not much. If you take it to bits you might either find something that is obviously burned out, shorting to earth etc. Obviously unplug it first but I don't imagine you need telling that if you are happy to take it to bits :). If you are going to chuck it then there is nothing to lose in having a nose around inside first and there are plenty of YouTube vids to get you on your way
I can lend you my old Dyson if you like? Still works perfectly 😉
You’ll need the Henry to vacuum out the Miele impeller once you get inside. Keep going until the Miele motor is spinning freely.

. . . as long as you’re in Singapore. 😉
Miele will provide a refurbishment to back to new. They even post a box for you. When we had ours done it was £65. Probably more now. It included a new cover and tools.
Call them.
Well progress.
Stripped it completely and blew a load of dust out of everywhere - there seems to be a short in the cable rewind system (mains power comes into this part before heading to the circuit board and motor). Blew it out with compressed and it ran for 10 seconds then tripped again so i need to take another look.
New cable system is £35 delivered so that's the worst case scenario.
Yep, shorting within the rewind system - I'll replace it.
