On Easter Monday I'm taking my 8yr old to Oulton Park to watch the British GT Champs.

I haven't bought grandstand tickets, just general entry as I thought we'd move around a bit.

Any hints and tips, better parts of the circuit to aim for?

Thanks

Most of the crashes are at Druids 😉 and you can often see some of the lesser cars lifting a wheel which is quite cool. I haven't been to a big event for a number of years but often go down during the week to watch the practice sessions and take some pics as it's free to get in. Just look at the course map and you will be fine.

Pop into the Edgerton Arms for a pint. Especially if your kid likes dogs.

I'll Caveat this advice with the info that I haven't been for a while and I usually watch two-wheeled...

Get on the inside of the track and sit on the run down to Cascades (I think) - they come haring round the first corner, down the hill into a good passing spot then off up to the hairpin.  Then you see them again coming down through the chicane and off round the back of the paddock.

Quite often you get a big TV screen on the opposite side of the track so you don't even miss out on the last corner antics at Lodge(?).

Leave early as the exit roads are worse than crap!

What lerk says. Watching them drop down to cascades then head off to the hairpin (name eludes me) is mega....you then see them coming back towards you into the chicane.

Inside circuit at the first corner feels like you get really really close to the cars, so I'm sure that your 8yr old would enjoy it.  Also walking around the paddock is fun too, literally surrounded by 10's of millions of pounds worth of kit.

It's not that big - you can easily see all of it just by ambling round.

And British GT Champs won't attract anywhere near the same size crowds that Touring Cars does.

Thanks all, it'll be his first race so we're both looking forward to it.

My earliest childhood memories are of being stood at the side of the track at Oulton Park.  My dad took me all the time for cars and bikes. I love the place!

You can't really go wrong anywhere as its pretty compact and open. We'd always move around between races and view from different specs throughout the day. Cascades is great and I've also always liked Druids and Deer Leap too

You'll have a great day. Its heaven for an 8 year old

Make sure you are there for the support races, thats where the better crashes happen.

The chicane before knickerbrook tends to get some good crashes.

As above you can walk around quite a big section of it

I did it last year with a few kids. Great fun but several horrible showers (the kind that come with freezing cold wind) kinda limited our time more than was ideal. We had a nice time watching different races from different spots - home straight was alright for a bit since we'd parked near there, nearly (well y'know, 25 yards or so) had a bonnet land on us from a Ginetta that had some duct tape patching it down, that was fun. Inside the circuit to Cascades also nice but I thought the best place to view the action was probably the outside of turn 10/Hislops, the second chicane that leads into Knickerbrook. From there you can see them belting down to Cascades and off to Island and the hairpin, then as they come back from Brittens to Hislops there's plenty of speeding up and slowing down, lunge overtake attempts into the corners and so on, right in front of you. It's a quieter side of the track in terms of crowds and if you manage to get parked over there I think it'd be easier to get away later too.

We missed the pitlane walk as the crowd was nuts, but wandering around the paddock was nice. I think I had the race up live on my phone on Youtube which was a handy way to have some slight clue what was going on.

I binned my old CBR600 at Cascades. Did about 3 cartwheels and ended up deep in the gravel. Definitely a good place to watch.

Take plenty of gear, layers, and wrap up warm, even if the weather seems decent when your in the car park. Like all circuits, you will be cold and exposed at points if the wind gets up. Take a rucksack and a mat/rug so you can stop and sit whenver/wherever you like. A while since I've been to Oulton but other than Silverstone, its like all UK tracks and you can wander pretty freely round most of it.

British GT will be great to watch, variety, some great racing, amazing sounding cars and it wont be mental busy like the BTCC as mentioned above. Enjoy!

At a touring car meet way back in the early 90's some lads were ragging their mini around in the in-field. Did a hand-brake turn and the wheels dug into the grass and it flipped on the roof. Four of them scrambled out, pushed it back on it's wheels and carried on!

This. 🙂 I'd have a look and see if the trackside commentary is broadcast on FM (I know it is at Silverstone and Donington) - if so, and if they're any good, the races will be much easier and more interesting to follow. I just use my phone and an ancient pair of Samsung headphones for the FM aerial, my Android phone has a radio app built in if I search for it that's not visible in the list of apps. Hope you both have z fantastic day. 🙂

Sounds like a lot of you have fond memories. Fingers crossed we get decent enough weather and he enjoys it. We're both looking forward to it.

Info above is great, so we'll get a bit of a plan and check out info on radio broadcasting.

Also has double headers of GB3, GB4 and Ginetta's so should be plenty to keep us busy.

Thanks again!

Race circuits should always come with special van burgers and chips. Do not miss this part of his education

Went today, not been to anything like this before. Great weather to be outside and really enjoyable, GT’s proper noisy, GB3’s well fast! It’s ace wandering around the paddock.

Thanks for all the tips, we had a great day despite the weather and the fact a large part of the races were behind safety cars.

His favourite spots were:
- Cascades (we saw a few offs in the GB3 racing here and across at Hislops)
- Lodge/Deer Leap (where we were closer to the cars and saw GT3/GT4 overtakes heading through Deer Leap.
- Dentons/Clay Hill (just because you can get close to the track when they're flying)

Much to his disappointment we didn't get stuck in the in field parking despite being in a rear wheel drive car.

At full chat his favourite engine note was the Astons.

Remember getting proper burnt watching the GT's (before covid).  Heard it was a nightmare getting in due to ground conditions (i.e. parking). The official twitter page for the GT racing apologised for the delays.

We had no bother getting in or out really. Arrived about 9am and had 10min queue from Coach Road. Directed to a central grass area near Clay Hill to park which wasn't too bad. I did move later in the morning to a space just off a gravel road in the same area so I knew I'd be able to get out if the grass got churned in the stampede to leave.

However, the second GT race was still Full Circuit Yellow with minutes to go and so we started walking back. As we got close to the car it was still Safety Car but only 1 lap left so we darted and got straight out the circuit without any issues.

Heard knickerbrook was particularly bad but I just think people don't think. People were driving onto totally boggy areas presumably without thinking how they'd get out.
