Morning all, I've just got a fancy new phone from work, which is frankly over-kill, nonetheless the Qi charging thing is quite a good thing.  However, i currently have a car phone holder, it's one of those things that fits in the drinks holder and has a long windy neck than then holds a phone.  I have until now, just been plugging USB in to charge, however i like the idea of bodging in a Qi charger.

I've found the following

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/8631261

How can i get a USB on the end of this to plug in to my USB cigarette lighter?  Of has anyone come across any other good phone Qi chargers?

cheers, Sui

Qi charging potentially saved the life of my Nexus 7 2013 a few years ago, after the mini-USb port got drowned in cola that escaped from a loose lidded bottle... Never even knew about the Qi charging feature until then.

Came from Ebay, had detachable mini-USB (Qi pad end) to USB cable, <£15 IIRC.

Dont you need a pcb to control it as well? Lots on ebay with usb interfaces you could plug and play.

personally id not bother with usb, just fit a fused spur to something with an ignition feed like the cigarette lighter and not plug anything in.

There are indeed loads of Qi charging stickers ready to roll on ebay etc.

BUT

I've experimented and spent money on in-car Qi charging, and had to give up in the end.  Without the 'fast' charging standard (this is a protocol enhancement not just an adjective) they cannot charge usefully at the same time as being used for satnav - not enough current.  And they get too hot quickly.  The 'fast' ones can, and they also promise to manage the heat so they don't overheat, however the one I had managed it when the battery temp got too high by shutting off.  Then turning on again, then off, then on etc about 3 second intervals.  Which was stupid, and annoying because of the little animation and sound you get.

In the end I gave up.  Which is a huge shame because I really want wireless in-car charging.  I might end up having to buy an Android Auto compatible head unit and fit a charging pad into an oddments tray in the car somewhere like new cars have.  Or, I could do that anyway and use that when I don't need satnav but still want audio etc.

I expect this is a non-starter.  USB 1 and 2 power specs are 2.5W, Qi charging is North of 5W.  Assuming you were to get it to work, it surely wouldn't charge at anything like Qi speeds.  Probably why Molgrips had the problems he had.

As mentioned above, there's a lot more to it then sticking a voltage on the end of the coil.

Look for wireless charging evaluation kits.

No, the 2.5W spec is minimum, you can get supplies that can deliver much more. 2.4A is common.  My Qi charger did charge quickly, and the phone reported it as 'fast charging' rather than simply 'charging'.  The issue was the heat generated by using satnav and charging fast at the same time was too much.
