We don't/can't have mains gas so use bulk LPG from tanks in the garden for CH and cooking.

Have just tried to switch the deal but been told that new supplier won't take on the contract as the tanks' positioning does not meet current regulations. They need to have 2½-3m clearance from the house. siting new tanks is likely to be very problematic due to the proximity of other houses and the layout of my plot, shared driveway etc...

Problem is they have offered a deal that could cut my bill by 15-20% (which would be over £200 per year!). Now assuming I go to my current supplier and tell them the tanks don't meet regs (which I am sure they already know but are quietly ignoring) do I risk them cutting me off as the cost of installing new tanks is too high...

Anyone had issues with re-siting these types of tanks..

How about going back to your current supplier and tell them you can get a better deal elsewhere unless they can modify their pricing.

@ Sharkbait - done that, thing is there are 3 suppliers Calor and JGas who are about the same, then MacGas (~BP) who are offering the really cheap deal.. I am with Calor at present.

Health and Safety ... errrmm ... strikes again.

In the far east the gas cylinder for cooking is place inside the house in the kitchen but I never hear explosion every day or week or month. In fact, not even once every 5 years. There might be one or two odd cases in a decade or so but not common.

Fast forward and now you are ransom by H&S job worth ...

There is no upfront cost for MacGas or anyone to do the install - they can't supply you if you don't have tanks afterall. Legislation was introduced some years ago to stop this, you pay a standing charge of around £60 per year and the tanks can be "transferred" between suppliers. Under the current regs Calor will have to replace the tanks when they are 20yrs old we estimate mine to be 10-12 yrs old.

I am struggling to find a solution tbh I just am annoyed that I have to pay so much for my Gas...
