Shame salmond doesnt just admit defeat and retire

Good to see common sense is prevailing, missing vital serious answers.....had they answered them even i might have voted yes.

Interesting that bbc world are very yes orientated , yet apparently bbc in the uk are no orientated.

Good to see yes party already throwing out the conspirousy theorys on bbc world.

I think the fat lady is dropping her mars bars in the fryer and doing her final warm ups. It would take a massive swing to get this back.
I assume though the discussion will run on for another 5 years.

I'm still watching. Looks like I've earned my hangover.

Can't argue with the results, massive turnout.

It's a victory for democracy even if I don't like the result.

Gordon Brown has swung it IMO.

I've disagreed with a lot if what you've said tbh. But this is bang on.

Ultimately could do the same thing those who want out are the noisy crowd not the majority. If you look at the options seriously and not in a daily wail way Europe is a much better option. Anyway it's over I'm glad the union has remained having grown up close to in Northumberland I'd be sad to see it become the frontier again.

They are called the silent majority for a reason, they are happy to be ruled. Nothing will change.

hah ! 354 pages of banging on about how unfair the UK system is and how it doesn't reflect the will of the Scottish people. the vote goes against him and suddenly he has complete contempt for ordinary people! :lol :

What promises? Cameron is only an elected leader. He needs to also get mp approval. He gives away more he'll also be punished election time.

Glad it's all over, the blue face paint can be put away for another generation.

If I were an snp supporter, I'd be pretty pissed off to be honest - this was supposed to be their life's work and they came well short of having anything like the answers to the argument that would have persuaded a majority. What have they been doing for the last few years if that was the best hey could manage?

Thank **** we live in a democracy.

What is going to be interesting is the next General Election.

Labour and LibDem are going to have to do a lot of work to regain their voters.

Otherwise there is going to be a large number of SNP MPs heading south - especially if the "extra powers" do not appear.

Perhaps it backs up what people have been saying that people would rather say Yes to avoid confrontation/lectures/patronising but know they will vote no.

mikewsmith - Member

are you trying to intimidate me there
It's been widely reported from various news outlets but as you say didn't happen. There must be another reason why people were saying Yes when meaning No.

That's a strange thing to say when in all the staggering number of opinion polls, bar one or maybe two, the results showed the No supporters winning.

It would appear that Scots voted exactly as they said they would vote.

.

A great day for GB, a great day for Scotland. Working people now need to unite to build a better society.

Never thought I'd agree with you but yes, that's the most statesman-like speech I've ever heard him make.

A strange thought has just occurred to me. All this proposed change (and it is massive Constitutional change) could only have come about because of a Tory Govt. Had Labour been in power then the vote in Scotland would have been a larger NO percentage & therefore no impetus for change.

though it pains me to say it a good speech from CMD and we should all be proud we live in a democracy where we can do this and we all respect the decision without recriminations. He was noble and brave to allow th evote and he deserves credit

The constitutional issues resulting from Devo Max and the west lothian issue should not be rushed as rushed legislation is rarely good.

Gonna be a lot of hangovers [ literal and political] today

Farage is the comedy turn for England in the same way as Salmond is for Scotland. Now in a Free (not fee, got a bit Lancashire there) Yorkshire our comedy politician is Gorgeous George the Respect MP for Bradford.

Cry Freedom Cry Yorkshire. It's on't front page of Yorkshire Post, it our turn now Westminster.

I switched off Radio 4 when farage came on
They still dont have any MP's so whatever happens they will have no say so why was he interviewed?

No one else with so little power has ever got this level of airtime
Oh and I could not GAS what he thinks

Didn't see CMD but heard AD on the way in. I hope CMD did indeed receiver some composure after the absurd panic that set in after one rogue poll - lessons to be learned there about polls and dealing with this type of opposition. CMD (and others notably Ed) need to think hard.

When so many divisions around the world seem to easily escalate to violent conflict I think the UK led by Scotland has given them a template to do something different.

The fact that this vote happened is excellent.

Ignoring what each party may have done in the past they seem to be doing ok at present. There's pm doubt they have been in government at a difficult time.

Are things perfect? No. Improving? Maybe.

All of this has at least made me think that if something in society/life isn't right then perhaps I ought to start by doing something myself rather than moaning about everyone else. If we all did one positive thing each day to help someone else the world would start to change maybe.

O voters of Scotland
When will we see your like again
That debated and cried for
Your wee bit hill and glen
And stood against them
Bland David's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

Those days are gone now, in the past they must remain

thanks for the assist @fasthagis 🙂

Congratulations to everyone who campaigned, debated and voted. I am delighted with the result.

As @tmh says the No campaign and Cameron should look quite hard at their (over) reaction to the Murdoch poll and indeed to it's source.

I think Scotland should be given income tax setting powers, I say so as its a political hot potato, lets see what they can do with it, my view is very little.

One very interesting comment made by Cameron is that William Hague will lead a panel to look at how English MPs vote on English legislation, the sub text here is that the influence of the Labour party will be reduced.

EDIT: A big thank you to Gordon Brown, I think he made a real difference

@epic I have been saying the same thing about Farage and UKIP for more than a year. The mainstream parties and many on here just dismissed immigration as a non issue, the voters have told us otherwise. Salmond fought a very good campaign he focused on a dream not facts and gave many a scare.

Farage is the comedy turn for England in the same way as Salmond is for Scotland.

You do Know salmold is the elected leader of his country with popularity ratings that other westminster leaders could only dream of

Without meaning to be a rude it is a view [largely]only the English have of him

As @tmh says the No campaign and Cameron should look quite hard at their (over) reaction to the Murdoch poll and indeed to it's source.

IF you want to get conspiratorial over it you can have it bith ways

Done to get concessions or done to make sure no turned up
Either way Westminster did "cave" in if you want tabloid language or offer concessions if you want broadsheet.

On reflection I think yes would have been better for me. Extrapolating the result looks like it will ultimately lead to perpetual Tory rule in the East of England, which doesn't fill me with a lot of hope. Good result for Scotland though.

Indeed JY indeed. I think Cameron thought the No would win easily and he would have to offer nothing. The SNP wanted Devo max as an option on the ballot and IMO it's the outcome they thought was attainable, and it's best for Scotland.
