Hello,
The first version of OS Maps Mobile (& the responsive web version) launched yesterday.
Download from the App Store or the Play Store - if you register for a free account you can experience our brand spanking new vector mapping all across the UK for free. Search "OS Maps".
There are many features to come into this product, it's getting very exciting.
If there are any questions, I'm a bit freer to answer now 🙂
Cheers
Downloaded... looks good! Annoyingly I bought some new (old) 1:25k maps the other week, without the downloads :-/
*goes off to download and run a critical eye over....*
still not forgiven OS for the online maps interface debacle.
Stoner, what was that in relation to?
Was that the white icons on the white map? If so, that's already been fixed and should be live already, or at least very soon.
@ plyphon - I posted this a week ago, presumably you didn't see it so have reposted:
@ plyphon - can you help please? Printing margins on this new fangled version are much larger than with the previous version - is there any way to change this? Thanks.
What is the 'responsive web version'?
Thank you. 🙂
So what's the relationship between the app and the web site? If I subscribe on the web do I get the maps on the app and are they available off line, or is that just from downloads from purchased paper maps?
Currently a ViewRanger user (I get local 1:25000 provided free as I'm mountain rescue and buy other tiles as needed), so just trying to work out what's the best bet for when I'm elsewhere in the country.
What is the 'responsive web version'?
Web version that automatically adapts size etc to the screen you're using. So same website works on a smartphone, tablet and PC.
Was that the white icons on the white map? If so, that's already been fixed and should be live already, or at least very soon.
just been back to OSMaps and, yes, that has been fixed now. Have a gold star.
Main gripe is that I need to be a paid up subscriber to view OS explorer/Lranger mapping?
Really?
What with Bing and Streetmap serving it for free! I get the idea of subscribing for additional functionality, such as route plotting, smart print output etc. But browsing? No. Bad Ordnance Survey. Bad dog.
I like the route plotting giving you the elevation profile as you add pins 🙂
Searching insists on returning a list of streetnames within which is my village name. But doesnt return my Village 🙁
Oh, and quelle surprise, Rodney, no Explorer or Landranger map rasters available 🙂
*heads off back to UK Atlas Lite where LR is free. Harrumph*
(and really, no disrespect to you plyphon, if you're involved in the software etc, that's really nice and has come out pretty well, but can you go and boot some arse upstairs responsible for the shitty approach to free use of the mapping we as taxpayers have already paid for!)
Okay alright 2 seconds here... haha
@ plyphon - can you help please? Printing margins on this new fangled version are much larger than with the previous version - is there any way to change this?
Thanks.
Hmm, I don't think so. Do you mean the margins physically when printed? I can ask what can be done if that is an issue. That part of the product is getting a slight makeover to make it a bit more pretty and easier to use, so hold tight there.
What is the 'responsive web version'?
A website that will work as intended on desktop, tablet & mobile. Non responsive sites break and display crap on smaller devices.
So what's the relationship between the app and the web site? If I subscribe on the web do I get the maps on the app and are they available off line, or is that just from downloads from purchased paper maps?
Yeah, so theres one subscription that covers web & mobile. If you subscribe, you get full UK coverage in 1:25 and 1:50k, and this new funky "night mode" map. You can also save any area of mapping for offline use. There will be some proper communication around this as it develops, but thats the crux.
Registered users (not subs) can import their paper maps with the smart map code.
I like the route plotting giving you the elevation profile as you add pins
Yeh, it's really cool that, ey. Try dragging a finger over the elevation curve also.
And questions relating to pricing etc isn't my area of work! Don't shoot the messenger etc etc. 😆
Thanks! May be worth a sub at that price then 🙂
OP thanks for the good work, been a very happy user of the Beta test version. Don't worry about Stoner he can't see properly 😉 I did a "guide" for him 🙂
BTW I've had issues with route uploads, seems the website still can only handle small gpx files. A typical 1-3hr ride logged on Endomondo won't load.
That looks pretty good on mobile.
I was a subscriber to the old Get-A-Map, and subscribed to the new web service a month ago. Functionality/visibility of that has definitely improved. Its also saved all my old Get-A-Map routes.
However on the mobile version I cant seem to access any web version saved routes? Is this coming?
The other really useful thing for me would be able to save maps/routes to view offline too.
plyphon - Have you done that elevation heat map I asked for? 🙂
Registered users (not subs) can import their paper maps with the smart map code.
Hi plyphon. How do we do this? I can't see an obvious option on the website.
<Edit> Going to try the app with this first and may upgrade to a sub if I get on with it.</Edit>
Aha! FAQ's covers most of my questions.
To download a map it appears you have to purchase it and get a smart code - is this correct? As a subscriber is this still the case? Otherwise I cant see the benefit of being a subscriber over a registered user!

I'll speak to Howard about this.

You can do that in the app. Log in, tap menu, and hit "Download Offline Maps". I'm not sure if you can view your route on this map offline, but you can certainly view that slice of mapping.
Hi plyphon. How do we do this? I can't see an obvious option on the website.
You know what, I thought this feature was live. I've just checked and I cant find it either. Sorry ha. 😳

No no, as a subscriber you get the whole UK as i said above. Say goodbye to paper! (I don't work in marketing.)
plyphon - Have you done that elevation heat map I asked for?
We're beginning to play around with funky data visualisation stuff actually. It'll be great.
Like lots!
Can you do a bridleway density heatmap tto please so I can see where to book my holidays 😀
(Apologies if this has been asked before)
Is there any way to import all the tiles I have bought in OS Mapfinder into this new app?
Thanks
@ plyphon - thanks for your reply. 8)

can you add the strava heatmap as well...
Can a route be made to follow a path automatically?
What's the difference between OS Maps and OS Mapfinder?
I downloaded OS Maps, is it meant to show footpaths and bridleways? Like the maps I buy?

by far the best at that is:

You would have thought so, wouldnt you, Anne. What with all the other free OS mapping resources one can choose from, without having to pay again...
I'm in a grump now.
can you add the strava heatmap as well...
no because thats owned by Strava....
Can a route be made to follow a path automatically?
That's coming in the future. Our detailed path network will be amazing.
no because thats owned by Strava....
and made available on a public WMTS

Can I buy an OS map and then use the data with a non-OS mapping app or am I conveniently tied to the OS app? If I don't want the digital mapping, is there an opt out with a discount?
As a ViewRanger user I'm effectively being asked to pay for the same data twice, no? Or have I missed something?
I'm guessing the OP works for OS btw?
As a ViewRanger user I'm effectively being asked to pay for the same data twice, no?
four times actually.
Once as a tax payer 😉
second time when you bought your viewranger map
third time when you buy your paper map and
fourth time when you pay to see the maps on the OS App.

From my understanding (as a normal punter)
The digital mapping on mobile is free as the cost is the same as the OS GetaMap.
You are paying for Viewranger access currently not for free use of the map data, so yes you'd pay twice. Its my understanding the data is much cheaper via the OS app

Never mind, I quite like paper maps

I think it works like this: if you buy a new series Explorer paper map you also get a code on a scratch off panel which you can then use to download the digital version of the paper map to the new OS map on your iOS or Android device.
The cost of the map has risen, presumably partly to compensate for this, so you are paying for the digital data as well as the paper map whether you want it or not. So the digital mapping on your mobile isn't really 'free' as you're paying extra for it I think.
However, although you're being sold that digital data, if you choose to use a different mapping app, you then have to pay for the same data again in a proprietary format to the app company - ViewRanger for example - which is basically re-selling the data in a different form.
I'll look at this when i get a chance. I'm a big get-a-map user
I didn't think OS received in any tax income since 1999?
You can also save any area of mapping for offline use. How?
PS - loving it!
I gave it a test run today. I like it.
Tried importing about 10 gpx files, every one fails. Looks like it need a bit of work.
Am I being daft? Which app?
I can only find the online mapping (ie. Via browser) that I've subscribed to and been using for a couple of weeks (and keeps logging me out of requiring address and password, really annoying!)
Yes, that's the one I've been using - can't find anything on the App Store.
Am I being daft? Which app?Go into Play Store and look for OS Maps
FTR, the Sign Up option doesn't work on Android (not on my Nexus 5 anyway) - it just refreshes to the Log In page.
Ok, bit lost here.I am a fully paid up subscriber to Get a map and now OS maps. I have downloaded the app but cannot find any way of signing into my account on android.
I will admit i am a bit slow but i am not usually this bad 🙂
I downloaded the app on my phone (Android Lollipop), and I think it is a big improvement.
It is a pity however that the huge amount of money I have invested in OS paper maps over the years is not covered by the new arrangement of receiving a digital copy when you buy a map.
Unfortunately I had to remove the app from my phone as it wiped all app associations (for example the phone tried to open emails and word docs using OS maps) but it was not listed as a default app in settings, so was unable to remove the associations. The only way to fix was to remove the app.
Shame
Is this app different again from OSmapfinder where you would buy map tiles?
Is this app different again from OSmapfinder where you would buy map tiles?
Same question. I'm dumb. I've been merrily buying tiles on OS Map Finder for iOS recently as that was Ordnance Surveys official app offering. Are maps I bought not transferable in anyway to the new hotness?
Again, for the technology biffs (me) if I download the app in App Store (there are 2 os apps?) and pay the annual get a map subscription, I can download whichever map I like to my mobile?.

I don't think so. I think it only gives you access to the map while you're online but doesn't cache it on your device. But I may be wrong. If you buy a new 1:25,000 paper map and download the digital version however, it will cache it.
So... all the money I've spent buying various packs and tiles in Viewranger over the past couple of years - is that money wasted?
I kind of knew it would be eventually, but it's still a kick in the teeth when it happens.
They still work in viewranger though? From what I can see so far viewranger is a much more capable app.
I've downloaded the app and signed up for the £17.95 yearly sub. I think it's a worthwhile investment.
I use viewranger too and think that it is a great app but the paper map printing option in viewranger is rubbish and so blurry that you can't actually use the maps.
Bit gutted as I wasted another £7ish on view ranger credits this week but it's only money 🙂

^Is their an answer to this please?
How do you save the maps for offline use?
Well, looking at the new map, there doesn't seem to be any obvious way of importing tiles purchased through the previous app. It all seems pretty basic - you can't, as far as I can see, import or export GPS files and there's no cloud-based file sharing to the OS web-based OS Maps.
I guess it'll be fine for very basic nav use, but less so if you want something more fully featured.
I didn't think OS received in any tax income since 1999?
Not only that, but we operate at a profit, so actually give back to UK Gov.
Downloaded the iOS app, have tested the map save for offline use. Web version working smoothly too with the exception of gpx import.
As for loading previously bought map tiles I don't think that is available as the new app is a subscription service covering the whole country
Nice work OP and definitely worth the subscription IMO
Hi Guys,
A lot of these questions regarding importing previously bought maps from Get-A-Map i'm sure HAS been considered, but I don't have the answers myself without going charging round the building finding the correct guys.
HOWEVER.
We do have an EXCELLENT customer service team who have all the answers with this stuff. If you drop them an email they usually reply within hours, not days.
Can my digital maps link to an OS Maps account?
The app uses the same login details as your OS Maps account, but the first version does not automatically share routes from the app to the desktop version. We are looking to add this in future releases.
How do you save the maps for offline use?
In the native app (iOS/Android), hit Menu, hit "Download offline maps"

Is Get-A-Map the same as OS Map Finder (the iOS app I have been buying maps for)? The FAQ talks about getamap but nothing about OS Map Finder. It all seems rather bloody confusing to the customer!
Am I the only one who doesn't really see the point? I have all national park areas in 1:50,000 off-line for ten quid (in the outdoors GB app), ok I'm lucky that I live in one. Can buy additional areas for a price, not too unreasonable but I've not needed to.
This OS app gives me the option to download maps only if I actually buy the paper version first, which costs far more than any of the normal electronic apps charge. Or is there something I'm missing? I'm sure most outdoors types already have a fair stash of paper maps and won't be looking to buy them all again at huge expense just to get the electronic version.
Or is there something I'm missing?
You pay a subscription and get the whole of the UK instantly, no paper code required.
thecaptain, I am a map geek. Have many maps and generally buy one for anywhere I visit. I have GetaMap / OSMaps too as any map I want is available online in the office for that all important lunchtime browsing and dreaming of the countryside. It's good value at £18 a year and I am supporting OS. Getting the iOS app too for no extra cost is a bargain. I've been using the beta test version a lot and I like the fact I can pull out the phone and know exactly where I am on an OS map pretty much immediately.
So for £18 a year I can have all of the UK in 1:25000, and the ability to download maps for offline use?.
I subscribed a few weeks back as I thought it was a decent deal and the app is exactly what I was hoping would be added. The app is pretty slick, works well and the offline download makes it a winner for me. Couple of questions/suggestions:
Does the app display in landscape on the iPhone? It would be useful when specifying map areas for download.
Would it be possible in future to download offline map areas according to a saved route you can select? If you could select the width of map download along either side of that route, it would be great!

Yes.

Based on my limited playing the download is for the visible screen so you scroll out to get the whole route then "save" and you can scroll back in as required. This uses more memory than your idea of a route plus margin idea but I suspect that might be complicated to implement.
I can't find the "save map" feature in the menu.
I'm an android user. Can view the maps but when I go to menu I don't have the option to save it.
Is there anyway to get any of the Memory Map maps that I've bought over the years onto the new app?
Having already paid for both paper and electronic copies of the maps I've no intention of paying an annual fee to be able to continue to use the data I've already paid for.
As an aside, if I was OS I wouldn't be crowing about returning money to the public , given that you're only achieving that by reselling a product that was paid for by the public in the first place. Maybe you should be cutting charges so you break even?
Oh yeh I guess at somepoint I should say I'm not representing the OS in any capacity here, just sharing a great iOS app 8)

And 1:50k!
paulrockliffe - Is there anyway to get any of the Memory Map maps that I've bought over the years onto the new app?
MMTracker (android), its not in Google play but you should be able to find it easy enough
dknwhy-I can't find the "save map" feature in the menu.

Same problem for me. Get a map subscriber but can't save maps from the new app.
Oh, ok, that makes more sense. Odd that the subscription isn't mentioned anywhere in the app, that I can see. A bit disappointing that it costs 18 quid when the same subscription deal seems to only cost 10 quid in the app I already use!
Blog post on our new mapping & mapping apps.
Here's a post from the blog that explains it all a bit better than me.
As I said before, this is the very first release of this application, there is a lot of awesome stuff coming in the future!
FYI - I installed to have a look. Then unistalled it as my device is now asking me if I want to open EVERYTHING in the app. This is on Android and it's where you click a link or shortcut in the OS that can be directed at one of several apps, eg a new email link on the lock screen.
Cheers for the MMTracker idea, will get onto that.

Oh come it's Friday lighten up 8) Also you've paid for a licence to use the map data in Memory Map, who knows how much of that actually finds it's way to the OS
I like the fact the Ordnance Survey was done so that the artillery had better information for shelling stuff - boom boom !. Now we just amble and potter about using the data. Same story for Admiralty charts.
Yup, and one day we will save you all from the zombie apocalypse.
