I already have the complete UK in MM in 1:25k, but it's an old version so don't think the maps aren't compatible with modern apps.....

I've been using memory map for a few year quite happily(on android though). Only cost me £20-30 to activate all the 1:50,000 maps for all of scotland.

Classic Map Compatibility - Classic maps are unencrypted maps (usually older maps). If you purchased maps prior to the new registration system (when you created a user ID and password), they most certainly fall into this category. If your maps are shown in your license list (as a resource), they do not fall into this category. Activating the Classic Map Compatibility resource enables you to use these older maps on Android devices.

might be a relevant starting point?

You can go into the MM .qct file using a hex editor and change the copyright date on the old maps so they work
I did this years ago with my desktop maps from MM 2004 so they ran on V5
They also work with the MM app on my iphone no problems so I assume this might fix the compatibility issue
Can't recall how you do it but it was a 5 minute job, google probably tell you

Try UK Map by Phil Endecott on iPhone. Once you've purchased the app you can download any UK map in 1:25 and/or 1:10 for free. I've been using it for years.

OS Get-a-map were promising off-line viewing on the new app, dunno if its available yet.

Then its just £17 for a subscription, and you get all the latest maps, everywhere. There was a thread on here about it a while back.

Download OS Maps and either buy the area you need and use the smartmap code, or subscribe for a year for £18 and get the whole of the UK in 1:25k, 1:50k and with DPN routing inside national parks (which is awesome, btw.) You also get access to the web product at https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmaps/

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/os-maps/id978307846?mt=8
PS: Yes you can download areas for offline viewing

PPS: Sorry mods for the blatant plugging - but the OP did ask!

Whats DPN routing?

From memory I think Viewranger lets you buy individual tiles. It also supports OpenStreetMap/OpenCycleMap maps which are entirely free.

So one cheapskate option is to only buy the OS tiles you really need and just rely on OSM/OCM maps if you find yourself in the the other bits.

Whats DPN routing?

It stands for "detailed path network". Essentially OS set some geezers round all the national parks plotting all the bridleways and trails where possible and speaking to the local park authorities to catch all the routes.

So then within the OS Maps application you can plot along these paths and the app will automatically route you around the DPN network. It's called "Offroad routing" within the application on the map layers menu.

It genuinely works really well. And I'm not just saying that cuz reasons.

EDIT: in the app store link I posted you can see it in the second screenshot routing someone up a mountain.

Wait for a deal on Viewranger - I got a lot of map credits for 11.99, and got all national parks plus most of the S/SW for that.

Comes around every so often

EDIT: Just checked as I had to wipe the phone, think it was sold as ViewRanger (Premium) in the App Store - at least thats what I have in my icloud apps listing as owned.

I've downloaded OS Map Finder but no subscription offer. Maps are even more expensive than ViewRanger!

Edit Looks like they have two apps...

Another OS Maps subscriber here. Excellent - and you can save maps offline as well.

The website is very light on what you actually get for your subscription eg are the maps cached on the iphone and available offline?

I think you can view maps offline in Android if you create a route and save it for the area you want to view. Seems to work on my phone if I switch it to airplane mode, open the app and load a saved route.

Yeh, so all the supporting literature is to come.

But essentially, on iPhone in the menu there is a "Download offline maps" button that you can use to download, and cache for offline use, anywhere you'd like.

For Android this is coming, but not present yet. It's on it's way though!

In android atleast, I'd to activate all the maps one at a time(well a load of tiles at a time), was a pain in the bugger to do to be honest, but yes it does download and cache to your device for for offline use. (I'm quite map geeky so like having them there for investigation purposes) takes up about 800mb in my phone for scotland alone, so uk would probably be closer to 2GB. (1:50k)

basically, with the stuff I get you get a certain square mileage, so 10,000SqM and you can activate any tiles across the uk you like till the allowance runs out.

tbh a tenners worth of activation should be plenty to last anyone a good while.

These aren't accessible on a desktop though. I just use bing maps for that.

Piss poor website, no detail on what the difference is between "Adventurer Automatic" and "Adventurer". Just seems to want to take your money and then you find out what you get for it....

Also, not very clear on whether the subscription is per month or per year....

I'll feed that back, cheers

EDIT: Can you guys do me a favour - can you link me to the exact place you're getting confused over pricing?

I.E: Did you go straight to the webstore or did you visit through the OS Maps app mobile/desktop version?

This will help us figure what is confusing people and we can get it sorted quicker. Cheers!

This page on the website...

Normally you'd be able to click on the package title on the LHS and see the details of what you actually get. As it is, this page is all the detail I can find....

Eg what is the difference between the last two. What does 'best for continuous access' actually mean?

Appauling website design.

They'll not be asking you to spell-check it.

I read the last two as a one-off subscription rather than an automatically renewing one

Cool, so thats within the web app itself, cheers. We'll look into redesigning this and making it clearer.

The difference between the last two is the Adventurer Automatic puts you on a recurring subscription. Where as Adventurer is straight up 1 year of OS Maps and you have to renew manually when it's up.

The reason there is no "expanded feature list" is because all the features are the same for every tier - the difference is the length of subscription & price only.

Hope that helps.

No, that's from the website, although it is styled like an iPhone App for some reason....

Then click on My user name in the menu bar, then 'Subscribe' in the pop up menu and you get taken to the iOS-esque page

Yes, that's called a web application. There are two different types, the mobile application and the web application.

So when I say "the app" I meant from within the "OS Maps product", rather than the mobile app specifically (which can be confusing I admit)

Anyway, we should probably thank the mods for their patience here and not locking the thread so far - I don't want them to start thinking i'm here purely to use the forum as a user testing resource!

To be honest, it's not much of an advert for the site, if you hadn't posted I'd have walked away, as I can't stand shite UIs.

As it is, I've forked out the £20 and it seems OK so far!

Thanks! Let us know how you get on. If you have any feedback regarding either mobile or web version shoot our customer service guys an email if you find the time - they'll forward it down to the correct guys.

We pushed live a new version of the iPhone app today with an updated compass design which works really well. Activate it by tapping the location button twice.

Cheers!

I had just opted for the OS Mapfinder app a couple of weeks ago (Mapfinder not Maps), on the basis that Maps wouldn't cash tiles to your device - that was after spending a long time trying to understand the different products. Sounds like buying tiles for the Mapfinder app was a waste of money if the subscription service now allows that. Grrr etc

OS map finder works well, just download area of interest before you go - sometimes you'll have to download multiple 1:25s to cover a complete route.

The desktop and iOS apps sort of work together (preferred getamap - but only because I got used to it!)

plyphon - any chance of direction up rather than just north up for those of us that turn maps around to face the direction were going...

I much much prefer os mapfinder to, as I understand it, its replacement OS maps.

The ability to have better track recording is good. The knowledge that I've bought the tiles, and they are there is as I drive out more reasurring.

The interface is also clearer and sharper.

The biggest thing though for me is the zoom. I can zoom in to a much higher level on the 1 to 25 thou on mapfinder.

OK, used it today in anger in the Lake District with no mobile coverage. It worked well but there are a couple of minor foibles:

1. It often seems to forget to load the maps and you have to zoom in and wait maybe 10-15secs for the maps to appear even though I'd only moved 1km since I last used it. This is on an iPhone 6, so no shortage of processor power. NB I don't let it run in the background, so kill the app after checking my location and then relaunch it next time etc (to stop it draining the battery in the background).
2. The compass / direction arrow seemed pretty random, I'd prefer it if it just gave a dot for my location and I'll use a real compass.

Way more handy than faffing with a proper map in a waterproof case etc when wandering round in the clag.
