Planning on trying Oruxmaps on a Motorola Defy I have very cheaply acquired.
Having worked my way through the threads here and their web site I have a couple of questions. I am not an up to date sort of chap and half of what is said befuddles me. What I can do with confidence is download OS maps into soft ware and then calibrate them.
Now then, am I right in thinking that with Oruxmaps I can do just this. ie take maps from a source and ste them to talk to Orux. All via my PC. Then transfer them to the SD card.
Do I need to get Orux to my phone or will the above be enough.
Bear in mind I have never played with a phone that cost more than 10 quid new in my life. I anticipate some swearing but its time I had a new challenege.
Keep it simple. 😆

Oh yeah. Any reason why I shouldn't use 3's 3,2,1 PAYG tarrif, it looks to be the cheapest for some one who currently spends about 10 quid a year on the phone.

There's no calibration required if you can format the OS maps in Orux format (and there are apps to do this*). You just download the files to an Orux directory on the device and tell Orux to use offline maps. Then select the map you want. Easy.

* MobileAtlasCreator v1.8 (has to be this version, googling required to locate this version) is your friend 🙂

I think you need an older version of orux (to get free OS maps), but I don't use it and may well be wrong

again

"There's no calibration required if you can format the OS maps in Orux format"
and do I do that on the phone or the PC?
I am assuming that this needs the phone to have web access. Am I right?
trying to avoid that as that would mean leaving home for a few miles to do so . using the would be so much easier.
Like I said anything to do with phones is new.

You get MobileAtlasCreator for your PC (note my previous comments about the version), obtain the OS maps you need through that, get it to create an Orux format output file. Then transfer that file from PC -> phone into the Orux offline maps directory. Then configure Orux to pickup/use that mapping file.

Oh, I found Orux to be good but when using it to record rides it kept missing out big chunks even though the GPS signal was there. So ditched it and swapped to Strava. It's still a great mapping app though just didn't work for me on the ride recording front (I've still got it installed for the mapping aspects 🙂 )

I get the 1st sentence.
I assume the 2nd is via the SD
Have I put Orux on the phone for the 3rd?
Sorry 😳

Not worried about recording anything but distance ridden but that is essential otherwise I need another bit of kit on the bars.

No but I have a copy of it... email me if you need it.

get the 1st sentence.

Well done 🙂

Yes, you transfer the map files to the relevant folder on your SD card

Have I put Orux on the phone for the 3rd?

Install Orux maps onto your phone as the first thing - that will create all the folders which you'll need to transfer the maps to (the previous bit).

FWIW, I've never had any issues with Orux maps tracking my rides or at least no worse than the other apps I've used at the same time (eg Strava) - part of my commute goes through a GPS black hole and both apps lose and regain the signal at pretty much the same places.

First off, install Orux on your phone via the Google Play store.
Then have a play with that, get used to it - interface is quirky.

Then get MOBAC v1.8 on your PC and create your mapping file in Orux format. Connect your phone to your PC using USB cable, set the phone to data transfer mode and you'll then see your phone as a PC drive. Copy the mapping file from PC -> Orux offline mapping directory on the phone, disconnect USB and you're good to go.

The alternative is to install the older version of orux maps, download the maps you want (from OS or whatever) and then update the app to the latest version. this will mean that you can't download any new OS maps but you'll still be able to use the OS maps you've already downloaded.

The PC method is probably more straightforward but does mean you can't do it all on the phone.

For another option, I use Alpinequest on the phone (and still MOBAC on the computer to get the maps. I use the latest MOBAC tho with new scripts for OS maps and french IGN stuff)

Think I found one on the mobac forums, and can't remember if I wrote all the other one myself (they're not complicated) by modifying another, or if I got it somewhere.

Web browser in developer mode to see the URL format for the tiles and start with an existing script will see you right.
