Sorry totally random one but hoping someone can put my mind at ease a little!

I'm away in Portugal and trying to get booked into an optician first thing Monday as I'm not due home for a week.

I've noticed a couple of days ago my left eye has gone blurry at all distances.. doesn't seem to be getting any better and really hard to see words on the laptop or at any distance. I only noticed it as I was struggling to concentrate a bit whilst working on the laptop.

Now google throws up all kinds of horrors... so am I being smart enough just going to an optician at the soonest convenience or do I have to get my ehic card out or fly back and take it a bit more seriously?

I dont normally wear glasses - I got some for screen work years ago and barely wear them as every couple of years I go to specsavers and they say no change.

I've done nothing weird this week just a bit of surfing and working on the laptop.. its got me a little worried to say the least!

I'd be round to the nearest optician sharpish. It could be nothing more than a silent migraine which I experience every now and then. BUT I didn't know that until I was told so.
And here's the big but - on another occasion I had something slightly different and called by chance into the optician. I had had a serious retinal tear and under went emergency eye surgery to repair the damage. Surgeon said I was lucky in that it had been diagnosed quickly.
Hope it turns out okay for you.

Quick check at an opticians to make sure your good to fly. Then straight local option at home

I’ve noticed very recently one of my eyes is a bit blurry when I wake up. Time for some goggles. Think I’ve done well so far as 50 this yr.

Check yr insurance

I’d noticed a blurred patch right in the centre of my field of vision last year, which got flagged during my contact lens/eye test. Specsavers arranged an appointment with an opthalmologist at Bath RUH, who diagnosed early symptoms of macular degeneration.
He said the best course of action is to eat lots of green vegetables, as they contain a certain chemical which helps control it.
Which my g/f has been telling me I need to eat, so has been feeding me lots, and the blurred area has disappeared!
Hopefully, it may be something as simple as that, but it needs to be checked out soonest!

Go to the optician and see what tests they do. A full check here would include things like photographing the back of the eye and the test where you call out white dots to confirm the extent of the vision. If they aren’t doing the full tests or you feel any pain as they do them then consider your options fro there. It could be something completely innocent. Good luck.

If this happened in UK, it’s straight to eye hospital A&E. Do not mess with doctors or opticians.
Not sure about Portugal.

I got blurred vision in my left eye last year and it turned out to be a scratched eyeball. Fixed with chorampehicol cream and time. The eye hospital was amazingly thorough inspecting it.

From my 2 experiences with hospitals/doctors abroad, one actually being a really bad eye infection and the other a mugging I can honestly say once the insurance documents are shown the level of tests and post treatment meds increases dramatically!
Put it this way, I've used the eye washes for the last 4 years at home/work and in even in my riding bag as I got so many!

My mum had similar sounding symptoms on a ski holiday years ago. Turned out to be sun cream that had damaged the surface of her eyeball (temporarily)

[irrelevant] the optician she saw in Val D’isere just happened to be a good friends daughter who she hadn’t seen for years. (Small world) [/irrelevant]

....Who would refer you to an opticians who do most NHS triage work for eyes as the equiptment in most opticians is far better than that in hospitals.....

For the OP definaely visit the opticians asap, there are some things wher this could be something simple/inocuous, but there are also things where it could be more sinister, better to be safe than sorry....

the hustler +1 Boots’ kit was a world advanced over the hospital’s contraptions.

The hustler, sudden onset blurred vision is classed as a red flag, which means an optician would send straight to eye hospital without seeing it first. This is specifically stated by the NHS who don’t want to pay an optician then the eye hospital.
That is what happens in Oxfordshire. Other areas have different rules.

Well that may be the case in Oxfordshire but in our area we would triage to try to find the cause so that referral to the right specialist is done as soon as (Owner of an opticians that provides this service!)

Hustler we have mecs too. Someone who wakes up with sudden vision loss would be told to go straight to A&E. The triage would happen over the phone as they made the appointment.
It is the same with severe eye pain.
Different system then.
