Quite fancy one, can't wait for the Biolite stove to come out and suspect I won't be able to afford one when it does.
Have decided that a low tech alternative makes more sense!
Thanks!
"Used" Kelly kettles many years ago...
"used" because they weren't all that usable
utter tosh IMO...
I used them and thought they were great. Bulky and heavy tho and no place in my current lightweight kit.
I guess I should qualify my comments...
Great idea, and I thought I would like the simplicity...
Reality - where do you get fuel??? Most wood out in the great outdoors tends to be a bit damp.
When we used them below the tree line they were slow, unrealiable, filthy and liable to cause burns...
Above the tree line (4 weeks out of a 6 week expedition) we had very little / no suitable fuel.
Slow - see comments above re damp wood. Getting damp sticks to burn with any sort of fierce heat is a tiresome business when you are cold wet and want something hot to drink.
Unreliable - as above, down to getting the fuel going. we generally used petrol to get them going - dangerous, polluting, and not really the point
Filthy - combination of black sooty chimney and need for fresh clean water doesn't work.
Difficult to lift using the spindly handle when full of hot boiling water.
Corks are awkward and prone to burning / singeing
I looked at one, then bought a JetBoil, which works very well.
There are newer, lighter and more stable versions. Worth a read ...
