Can someone explain this, and how I can do something about it.
I have a number of browser apps on my phone and iPad, and all of them I have set to use DuckDuckGo as default search.
However, when I try to use Opera, it tries to force me to use Google, and I can’t find any way to work around it.
Opera isn’t a browser I use that often, but it’s often referenced as being a good, secure one, but I won’t use Google unless I absolutely have to, and being given no choice doesn’t sit well with me, when I’m specifically telling the app to use DuckDuckGo!
Any clues as to how I can stop this, or do I just bin Opera?
Point the first: why? I have a number of browser apps on my phone, that number is "one."
Point the second: on iOS all browsers are the same thanks to Apple's restrictions, you're just using Safari with a different skin.
You should be able to choose your search engine by clicking the search engine icon, then you get a drop down..
Mine is set to duck duck but it's handy to use other ones when needed.
Edit.. To set a default search engine, go to settings, search
Why not use the Duck browser?
I imagine that opera are hoovering up user base with the fringe news outlets reporting free functionality it has that other browsers don't have natively
People only use Opera for one reason. And I suspect that is why the OP has a number of different browser options on his devices...
Any problem with Safari?

as mentioned above, OPera click the three dots (bottom right), go to settings, change the default search engine

Not so... I've been using it for years as it seems it's the only mobile browser that can do text reflow properly.

That's your problem then.
Opera (iOS aside) historically used its own rendering engine. It switched a while back to Blink (like most other browsers). So Opera on iOS is basically Safari, Opera on anything else (including Mac) is basically Chrome.
If you're using Opera because you expect it to render betterer then you're working from old knowledge and are on a hiding to nothing I'm afraid.

Nope. If I zoom in on this page in Chrome (android) the text enlarges and the ends of each line disappear off the side of the page so I have to pan to read it. In opera if you zoom in the text enlarges but the lines wrap to fit the size of the visible screen so you only need to scroll to read it. That's why I've been using opera for years.

It really isn't my problem, it works perfectly 😉 no other browser seems to be able to do it properly... and it drives me nuts not being able to resize articles ans forum text etc on the fly...
I'm on android though, I dunno about the IOS version.
For example...
Opera has (might be past tense now, it's been a few years since I tried the others) by far the best tab handling of any mainstream mobile browser. That is reason enough to use it.
The reply box size on this is pretty tiny though!

Ahh the reply box on this forum is horrendously small!
There is a microscopic dot in the bottom right corner of the text box that you can hold and drag it longer.. To the right of the 'gif' icon.
Good luck trying to press it though unless your fingers are the size of a mosquitos probosis!

I’ve got it set to use DuckDuckGo, but Google seems to override that! I can’t see how to stop it automatically showing Google when I open the app. I also use Safari, Firefox, DuckDuckGo and Brave, all of which have DuckDuckGo selected in settings as search, but Opera doesn’t show DuckDuckGo, it shows Google.
It’s very frustrating, and I’m close to just deleting it.

Aha! I’d gone into settings, but missed the fact it’s another layer deeper, so I’ve now got DuckDuckGo on Opera as well.
I do also have OrNET Browser, which has its own VPN, which shows whereabouts you appear to be in the world, just not in the EU or U.K., which could be handy… 😙
I do know they’re basically Safari, but they do seem to operate in a different fashion to each other, and it’s also handy to not have lots of tabs open on one specific browser - I can be looking for something on one, then hop to another to check something out, without losing track of the main subject. It’s just the way I’ve got into using search over the years that works for me, and I’m not changing my habits now.
It ain’t broke, so there’s nothing to fix.
Yup Opera is top browser for that text reflow thingy, obviously the free VPN on private browsing is a benefit if you want to listen to foreign radio through the Radio Garden site 😉. The flow function works well on anything other than iOS or iPadOS too.
Thanks for the tip on stretching the reply box! This the first time I've been able to reply comfortably on the new forum!
