Is it some kind of joke where only certain people understand the code they are speaking? Or am I just really thick?

Victoria Coren is also far too smug for her own good too.

I like it.

It's like Round Britain Quiz on Radio 4 - your brain acclimatises.

I think 'Stunningly gorgeous' were the words you were searching for to describe The Blessed Victoria, BTW.

The way she is eating that cake....
Cluesmiths will win, purely on looks.
It must have the lowest budget on telly.

You're really thick. HTH. (-:

To be fair, these are the semi-finals so the questions are significantly harder than the regular series.

It's just not for you, that's all. Not everything has to be for everyone.

It's a combo of general knowledge, cryptic crossword type skills and knowledge of how the game works.

I like it, but haven't watched this series.

She can afford to be smug, she's the daughter of one of our greatest humorists, married to another, she got a first at Oxford, and has won two European Poker Tour Titles, once winning £500K.

What have you got? 😉

I got Desmond Dekker. Me me me.

I got that by the second clue, not knowing who the second clue was (though my suggested 4th was Diana Dors).

Stoatbrother - none of your business!

I like quizzes, a lot, but these the ones I tend to like are more general knowledge based.

I got Dogme 95!

GF got the first round music one with the "little" in the title.

The first rounds are way easier than further on in the competition - and I think you'd have to be a genius to not find it mind-boggingly confusing the first time you watch it anyway! VC-M is awesome.

Programme = dull. Presenter = dull. Presenters husband = dull.

It's our favourite program here - only another two to go in this serious 🙁

^^ To be fair, I do not mind the programme - I do find both Mr & Mrs C-M almost unbearably smug though. Alan Coren however - he was a genius!

That was a joke. Wayfarers were far smarter then lost it on the round where even I can answer the questions.

Occasionally watch it but it does have a certain hint of middle class smugness about it that feels wrong.

You can just imagine the entire audience getting passively irate at something really unimportant and blaming it on the poor or immigration 🙂

Used to work with a bloke who is one of the numerous people who set questions on it. He was one of those people who love esoteric information and was clearly pleased that he was considered bright enough to set questions for Only connect.

I can't watch it - I find myself mesmerized by her enormous norks.

it's a troubling programme. As noted, her norks are quite tremendous, but the smugness is unbearable.

Incorrect answers in the last round lost them 2 points. I got 6 whole points this week.

I get the impression that the smugness is purely tongue in cheek.

Best gastrocnemii on the idiot lantern

Victoria Coren is also far too smug for her own good

I heard that when he and David Mitchell tied the knot they had to have the house walls re-inforced to cope with the unprecedented levels of smugness it'd have to contain

Edit: Her brother needs a good kicking, he's supposedly a food critic and he can't eat with his mouth shut. If I was a restaurateur I'd refuse him entry for that alone.

From the comments on the Guardian today, as for previous threads on here, it seems the whole world finds the missing vowels a lot easier at home than they seem to in the studio.

This is a blow, as I had previously thought I was some sort of missing vowels genius and was trying to work out how this could possibly be of use.

I like it, it's got that same knowing wink that Pointless does. I especially like the Only Connect set, theme tune, and fake seriousness, "Twisted flax" "That squelch sound means it's the onomatopoeia anagram round!". It's pure Going For Gold.

Nobody's ever going to play Street Only Connect though.

Agree, smugness is T-in-C, the norks are sincere.

the connecting walls were properly difficult on the final, you can usually get a few on the earlier rounds

(and yes they are one mighty set of shirt potatoes)

Yep, to be fair, those walls were proper bastards. 16 short words all beginning with the same letter. Even I panicked. 🙂

Only if you manage to get two pink blocks in the Quizzlestick round.

I happily watched University Challenge last night with the bloke from York with the long French Canadian name. But when Only Connect came on I had to flick through the channels, I settled on Newport County v Blackburn in the FA Cup on S4C. Welsh commentary makes more sense to me than Only Connect.

That was a cracking round of University Challenge. Liked the Only Connect final - wrong team won though. Couple of the 'speed of working out' on the earlier rounds was mind-boggling.

Respek to the big G for that Noble gasses answer. I spotted groups on both walls that the teams missed. It's gonna take all week for that dose of smugness to subside.

That Noble gasses answer should win you every quiz show on telly.
