Any experience with the online versions of board games
It might be 2 house holds with PCs and Android or 3 with my dad with a PC and an ipad. It looks like ticket to ride would work but we would all need to buy the app separately and some reviews aren't great. Open to suggestions
Also interested in suggestions.
We found codenames works well. There is a free website called horsepaste which generates a board and everyone can log in. Or for an authentic feel, have the cluemasters WhatsApp a photo of the physical card grid after each round
We played monopoly online last night, it worked really well with a FaceTime call at the same time.
Less cheating though
We play Boggle with my mum. Set up the iPad on the table to show the letters on the screen to her and it works well.
We play ticket to ride. Whilst it is true you need to buy it for each player, there are often deals available. We ended up paying less that we would have done for the physical game in order to get 4 of us playing simultaneously which seemed like good value
We also found a free scrabble clone which worked well for two players, I will try and dog out the details.....
Ticket to Ride is a great implementation and works cross-platform. Yes, you'll have to buy it for each player, but I think only the host player needs to own the map you're playing so if you have any interest in the expansions then only one of you needs to hoover them up. Also, DLC purchases on Steam or Play are tied back to your Days of Wonder account so if you say buy the app on Steam and then again on Android, once you log in you'll have access to all the previous content on the new platform.
Oh, you can do a thing on Steam where you can share libraries within your family. It's a convoluted process but it'd mean you'd only have to buy it once for everyone who had PC access.
Other ideas.
The Small World implementation is great. (It calls itself Small World 2 but it isn't, it's just so named to distance it from a previous shit implementation.) Among Us is fun, basically Werewolf / Mafia in space.
It's worth signing up to the Humble Bundle / Steam mailing lists, you occasionally get publisher sales or game bundles. There's one on at the moment for Asmodee Digital which includes, serendipitously enough, TtR for under three quid. In honesty, you'll not go far wrong with anything on that list (though some are far meatier than others). Carcassonne might be a good shout, that's about as lightweight a family game as you'll get.
We’ve used the new Dobble holder that rotates. Had a dedicated laptop set with the camera on the Dobble cards so we didn’t get an unfair advantage.
Thanks
I signed up to board game arena for 4 Euros a month. Played Carcassonne which was great. Much easier than playing an actual board game
Loads more stuff to try
Much easier than playing an actual board game
But where’s the satisfaction of throwing a monopoly board in the air in a huff sending cards, money and hotels flying?
Boardgamearena is good, £4/month paid subscription (only one person needs it even if multiple people are playing) and there are a few good games available for free.
Colonist.io let's you play settlers of catan for free (or it did over summer).
Catan universe (settlers of catan) works well on the phone (and on tablets I believe).
Horsepaste.com as mentioned above is great - make sure you share the link you create, don't get people to type in to their browser as often issues.
https://www.drumondpark.com/articulate_cards has articulate - good for family zoom
