..would you order the Queens Gin? Expensive tat funding the wall hangings IMO, don’t we pay enough taxes?
... it would be Electric Spirit Co. Achroous. Funnily enough, one of the very few gins I can abide.
Let's try and keep this topic interesting.
Nope, the cheapest stuff is all I need.
A bargin
If I only had one Gin in your life…
... it would be one too many.
Nasty stuff.
The Botanist.
A glug of that some Fever Tree proper tonic and wedge of frozen Lime no ice.
Death's Door...or Aviation....or G'vin Floraison.
Er...that's 3
As above Gunpowder for me closely followed by Monkey 47.
Lidl's gin is good enough for me.
Tanqueray from airport duty free. Their standard stuff is 43%, which is good and strong, but the airport type is 47%, bloody tasty and doesn't attract a premium price like all the trendy small batch manufacturers.
I'm not a gin drinker generally, I consider it to be mascara thinner. But this stuff is amazing, it's a game-changer:

My er kids bought me the hotel chocolat cocoa infused gin for Dads day. I like it, and it’s suggested to be drunk neat on ice which I tried with caution, but it was very smooth and tasty. It’s a delicate flavour, not like you think it could be.

Bothy gin's 'gunshot' for me. Very smooth and surprisingly easy drinking neat, no tonic needed.
After a couple of years of fairly extensive research its Tanqueray 10 for me, always the one I go back to. Two bottles arrived today, £7 off a bottle on Amazon.
Like gin. Can’t claim to have a discerning taste for it as per ales and ciders , but this one I remember well so it must have been especially ok!

Xoriguer
Quite a distinctive citrus bouquet/taste
Great with Fanta lemon or bitter lemon
Gin haters, it's not the gin you hate, it's that vile tonic water most people insist on putting with it 😋
Adnam's Copper House gin with Fevertree tonic.
Oh, good call BillMC, went to the distillary in Mahon a couple of years ago trying all the various infused ones - neat of course. My missis doesn't like it, so all for me! 😋
I don't do Gin, but this one according to Mrs Weeksy is superb, brewed locally by someone who lives about 400m from our door
https://www.wbbrew.com/product/dragon-hill-gin/
If I still drank, it would be Hedgerow. But now I’ll just have the tonic if I may.
Monkey 47 with Fever Tree tonic, honorable mention to Botanist and Siderit.
By the time I've diluted it with tonic and added ice, I can't tell a massive difference between brands.

Exactly. There's a lot of the emperors new clothes bullcrap talked about gin. I reckon most people couldn't tell one from another in a blind tasting once tonic and ice are added, especially if they are London dry style.
I usually use the Gordon's scale when assessing gins i.e. is it better than Gordon's. Sadly very few are.
This is my current tipple....

For me, Beefeater is the benchmark rather than Gordon’s. The Aldi one was ok.
I picked up a Brewdog Gin yesterday for £20 in the absence of Beefeater or Adnams, be interesting to see how it goes down.
There is a Cornish brand with a few different flavours that I keep meaning to try. Hopefully I’ll be down there next month and will pick one up.

At thirty quid a pop for 70cl? 16 drinks* and no cake?
I reckon that would get you a couple of litres of Fintons and 48 Jaffa Cakes for around the same price. That’s about 40 drinks (home measures 😬) and enough cakes to dip with some left over for bribes.
*Conservative estimate
Bloke I used to work with use to make some loverly sloe gin.IIRC he just got some basic gin from Aldi. The only downside was I use to get roped into to help to pick the sloes.

Just beautiful
Mahon gin.
Very nice.
Charlie Tanqueray "London" gin my arse, it's made in Fife and the spirit is probably the same as Jonny walker,Archers peach,Gordon's "London" gin, Pimm's,Smirnoff,J&B,the black and white digs etc
Huge tank farm at Cameron bridge distillery Windygates
By the time I’ve diluted it with tonic and added ice, I can’t tell a massive difference between brands.
Try cutting wedges of lime then freezing them.
Stick on of them in your G&T then you dont get it watered down but still get the cooling effect and the hint of Lime.
Wrecking coast clotted cream gin. Sounds odd but is delicious.
quite partial to this. It's got a fairly strong flavour, so isn't for everyone, but I love it.

The tonic is still watering down the gin though. I go for plenty of ice so it doesn't melt before I finish my drink.
Gordon's Gin was distilled in London but the plant was moved in the '80s probably to sell the land off in London, but all the other Diageo drinks with grain spirit are all made at Cameron bridge then bottled 2 miles along the road at Leven
I’ve a feeling Tanqueray 10 is made using the original still.
I give up. Mother's ruin to the fore
jodafett
SubscriberI’ve a feeling Tanqueray 10 is made using the original still.
Correct. I was at a Gin tasting class earlier this year and the guy running the class mentioned this. I think Tank 10 was one of the cheaper Gins he suggested.
We got the tickets as a gift. Enjoyed it more than I thought. A big 12 seater table with a few different double gins and mixers lined up at each place.
The bonus was that 4 no shows had their gins redistributed amongst the "students". Hic!!
Only one...? 😭
Probably have to be Martin Millers, as it's so crisp and clear that the merest hint of flavour in a tonic or a different garnish significantly alters the taste, so you would never tire of changing the flavour with added ingredients.
Variety is the spice of life however... Just opened a bottle of this a few moments ago...
Blooming Heck it's a bit good!
Did a tour of Dunnet Bay Distillery as part of the GF's 40th Birthday experience last year, their "Rock Rose" range of gins are all rather nice I must say. Special mentions to Gunpowder, Monkey 47, The Botanist, Sipsmith, Hendricks, Chase, Brockmans, Piston, Opihr too... Would have to say that my favourite mainstream Gin is Plymouth, probably a little too easy to drink that one! 😁
Mmm..Roku gin.... definitely the yummiest..
ANd I reckon I could tell the difference in a blind test.....
Tell me when and where, and have several delicious gins lines up ready please....
DrP
ANd I reckon I could tell the difference in a blind test…..
I'm sure you can, the differences between brands are often obvious. The question is whether you can still tell after it's been made into a G&T. I think any difference is subtle at best.
@uniqueusername totally agree that tonic is vile however I feel the same about most gins regardless of mixer. Exception being cranberry juice and a half shot of lemon juice, my god is that good!
Only gins I'll drink straight are aforementioned Electric Achroous and Eden Mill smoked. Achroous also works with Schoeferhoffer grapefruit as a mixer.
@redmex what does Dumbarton do, is that just a bottling plant/bond? Or are you meaning the Vale when you say Leven? (too many Levens!).

Nah..they are all so different...even when made up with a tonic
Roku is clean and slightly fruity..
Gordons is a 'classic' botanical gin..
Ophir is far too spiced...
6 o clock is a bit aftershavey...
I get you might not LIKE gin, and dismiss it. But not all gins are the same!
DrP
Brockmans it is for us. Although I was given a bottle of Mayfair the Christmas before last and that's a very nice gin. Whitley Neill Quince gin is also very quaffable.
If you are ever down Cornwall way this is an amazing shop to visit
I happen to be in Cornwall in a few days, I'll be sure to stop by at that shop.
I agree with DrP, there is a massive difference between the flavour of different gins. I have about 40 bottles and though some may be similar, I can definitely tell the difference between most of them.
Dyfi - Pollination
Martin Millers. Bloody lovely. Even straight. Smooth as.
Oh there's a few good choices here.
Martin Millers & Adnams Copperhouse are both very nice, and I'm enjoying a bottle of Whitley Neill Original at the moment, but when I'm in the mood my favourite has to be Alnwick Gin. Doesn't have quite the same clear & crisp flavours of the Martin Miller but has a slightly herby tang to it which makes it a little different.
I like gin. I currently have an almost finished bottle of the Lakes Distillery gin (nice, quite delicate), an unopened bottle of Bombay Sapphire (my favourite "standard" gin) and a half empty bottle of Bol's Genever (excellent, buy a bottle next time you're in Holland or Flanders, but drink it neat with ice or in a Negroni, not with tonic).
The nicest I've had was 12 Bridges Gin from Portland, Oregon. My friend got me a bottle as a thank you for being his best man. The ginger, pepper and cardamon made it quite different to standard juniper heavy gins.
Brockmans it is for us. Although I was given a bottle of Mayfair the Christmas before last and that’s a very nice gin. Whitley Neill Quince gin is also very quaffable.
You'll probably also like Nordes Gin
@uniqueusername totally agree that tonic is vile however I feel the same about most gins regardless of mixer. Exception being cranberry juice and a half shot of lemon juice, my god is that good!
Just a stab in the dark, but I bet you drink JD & full fat Coke normally? Or something else god awfully syrupy sweet...?
I can sit and drink Tonic on its own... Good Tonics are as important as the Gin! They should never be sweet either... A good G&T should be crisp, dry and refreshing without a hint of sweetness. 👍🏻
I get you might not LIKE gin, and dismiss it. But not all gins are the same!
I like gin and agree that they're not all the same. Why would you think otherwise from what I've said?
Anyway, I'll stick with Lidl gin and you can stick with Emporer's New Clothes.
My home made sloe gin is the best ever
No3 Gin, voted worlds best three times and only Gin to ever win best spirit at International Spirits.
Best serve is in a Gin martini closely followed by G&T with Schweppes 1783 tonic (slightly better than Fever Tree) , slice of blood grapefruit and perhaps a sprig of Rosemary.
Just a stab in the dark, but I bet you drink JD & full fat Coke normally? Or something else god awfully syrupy sweet…?
*boke*
Well off the mark.
I've done my time on JD and Coke, no ta, gives me the rot these days.
No, I just don't like herby/botanical stuff whether that's gin, arrowroot schnapps or whatever. That concoction is an exception and is more sour than sweet actually.
Craft Gin club introduced me to Blue Bottle, no other gin has impressed me this much, its the pinnacle of ginawesomeness!
Agree about the good mixer point above. Co-op premium stuff in glass bottles is good and stays fizzy because of the glass. London Essence is also decent and not too expensive in the little tins, they are always fresh of course.
My home made sloe gin is the best ever
@tjagain sorry I missed that earlier, home made sloe is the business!
Not a gin fan - but the Crafty Distillery just outside Newton Stewart do a very tasty gin - Hills and Harbour - well worth a taste.
Three Rivers from Manchester Gin is very nice. I also need to get some Stockport Gin, distilled in Compstall (just around the corner from my house).
Flavoured gin is alcopops for the middle aged...
