Hi chaps,

Its almost the end of my month of abstinence, and I intend on drinking a few good quality celebration beers, and keeping the amount down to a few at the weekend.

What's a good celebration beer or ale? I like dark ales usually..... So far thinking Brewdog Paradox.

Cheers

Ricks

I was bought a mixed case of dark beers as a leaving gift from colleagues not long back from here.

Without exception, they were superb. This was my fave.

Looking for a darker beer, i'd say old peculiar. My own choice after a month off is going to be Thornbridge's Jaipur. I can't wait. 🙂

I drank a lot before doing this dry January. Have to say I found first few days very hard, but now am wondering if I'll ever go back to drinking daily if at all? Anyone else?

I found the start ok, but the last week is going to be a struggle. I don't really miss anything drinking, but the taste over good beer. Maybe i'm kidding myself.

Similar situation to damo. Was drinking prob 6 out of every 7 days. Decided to go dry this month. First 2 weeks were tricky. But now am thinking I will try and avoid getting back to previous intake.

Will prob have a beer on 1st Feb though - going for a Tribute meself.

Does it matter....after the first one things are gonna be very hazzy...just like being 14 and nicking one of your Dad's beers 😉

After a few weeks off, not sure if you wanna dive straight into a real heavy beer.

Must admit I had a few Spitfires over the Crimble period and really enjoyed those.

Just the right amount of heaviness, whilst still having a fresh crisp taste....blimey, I'm sounding like that pretentious wine tasting woman!! 🙂

I'm going the same...and rather sadly, have already decided what to drink on both Friday 1st.
Hendricks gin, lots of lime, good tonic.
Followed by...
A bloody good bottle of red, possible a Nuit St George.

And Saturday the second...
A trip to the Sadler brew pub to drink Mud City Stout.

That'll do me nicely!

Have found January really hard, especially the past week. I was dry in September and that was a doddle by comparison. The only thing that's kept me going is that I've been abstaining with a few others from work and I didn't want to be the weak minded one. 8 days to go & the 1st falls on a Friday, which is a result. 1st October was a Monday I think which was a right pain.

Good luck to my fellow abstainers; nearly there!

Kernel

Export Stout (1890 London)
7.8% abv

Based on a recipe from a London Brewery in 1890.
Simple recipe massive taste. Dark, dark black. Oily texture. Loads of rich dried fruit and alcohol warmth rum and raisin. Then a herbal hop bitterness on top of huge lingering espresso. Hints of leather, tar, smoke, vanilla and chocolate. Roasty.

Same as damo. Heavy drinker up to and over christmas so had a dry january with a couple of mates. Been easy and lost 9lbs. Got dumped by the girl of my dreams in the middle of it so extra proud of myself for staying off it. To be honest I'm now at the stage where I don't think I'll ever go back to drinking in the week.

Well done everyone.

Do people really think that having a one month break from drinking, and then getting back to drinking a lot more than our bodies were ever designed to cope with, is a good idea?

Or is everyone just hoping that in twenty years time replacement livers will be mass-produced from stem cells, and cancer will have been finally cured?

lunge, try putting a couple of slices of cucumber in your Hendricks instead of the lime, it makes such a difference. Also don't use a tonic like that Fever Tree as it completely kills the flavour. Not that I drink a lot of Hendricks... 🙂

I went dry this month in support of the other half. Pretty irritating really. Still deciding between a pint or a nice bottle of red.

Got 12 bottles of Robinson's Old Tom at Xmas. Really rather good like a refined homebrew

If you like Brewdog Paradox then I suggest a little bottle of Tokyo* or something from the Abstrakt range.

Just the one mind!

I've had Paradox Jura and Arran both of which are brilliant. If your lucky you might find the Christmas Paradox which was rum cask; not as good as LOST DOG but still an epic beer.

I've had a leftover 5ltr mini keg in the cellar left over from xmas. It keeps saying 'hi' each time I go down to do some bike work / dry clothes. I'm hoping to ignore it until mid-february or thereabouts....

Going through a period of abstinence myself. To be perfectly honest, I don't miss it that much at all an am not sure I'll really bother carrying on with drinking when January is over.

So far I've saved money, felt better, slept better and lost weight since I've been not drinking. That seems to me to be a win:win.

Back to the OP though, how about trying an imported Indian IPA? I seem to recall having one over Christmas and it was very nice.

Dry January has been tricky each friday night, but I've actually found the mid-week and even saturday and sunday to be pretty easy. This is the first month fully off booze I've had in over 7 years - normally I go through phases of being good about drinking, having just a couple over the weekend and very little or nothing in the week, then I have phases where I have something pretty much 7 days a week.

So my reintroduction plan is currently that Fridays and Saturdays are fair game for a couple of beers or half a bottle of wine, plus the odd pint during the week if I fancy it, but see if I can keep it at that for the forseeable... I give myself about 2 weeks of February before that plans falls on its arse...

Edit: Oh - and I intend to break with a pint of whatever the Adnams guest is in my local next friday night... Here's hoping for Sole Star or Ghost Ship

Intending to meet lowey and co in the brewery on sat where they make the best stout out there
toying with the idea of having a couple this w/e then having another few weeks dry certainly beer only and leave the wine alone
