The greatest dilemma facing mankind?

I have a work phone. It’s a blackberry with access to my email and tinterweb although it has a lot of restrictions (I cant load any apps or divert calls and stuff – blocked by work). I also have my old personal phone where I have had the number for years (although I am a very light user).

The contract has just come up on my personal one and I’m thinking of ditching it and going to one phone. Or I could sign up again and get a smart phone and keep the two separate.

Anyone else wrestled with this issue recently ?

Never trust someone with two phones

I have two phones, one for each company i work for. No restrictions placed on either though.

It works for me as one is quite old and all friends have that number.

The newer one is purely for work and I find that one gets left behind quite a bit. Doesnt bother me, anyone who needs me tat bad has got both numbers anyway.

such a chronic problem could only be solved by at least one of these things

a dual sim phone
a fit of rage
being marooned (probably without a phone)

Dual sim would be the answer but there dosent seem to be much of a market for them. Even so my work is annal about tech stuff and it wouldnt be an option for me.

My gut feel is go with one phone but then i have to carry my work life around with me. But then its cheeper to have one, but id have to txt everyone my work number......

The issues are endless.

The way I've always done it before is to have diverts on my work phone to go to my number after 20 secs, or if it's unreachable (ie. I've forgotten to charge it and it's died). Work phone can then live in laptop bag, which will always be with me if I'm working. If I'm not, then I don't really need access to email and the like either.

I have 2 phones, one work phone which is just a basic nokia and my own phone which is an iphone. I'm coming up to the end of my contract on my phone soon but will be renewing/upgrading as I like the ability to leave the work phone at home and not worry about it.

Diverts was my first thought on this but diverts on the work phone are blocked. Dont ask me why.

I've learned the hard way that having a work phone with an 'off' button is a wonderful thing. Conversely, I've never had much success with any sort of workaround idea; I had a dual SIM adapter for a while, it sucked (as discussed in depth elsewhere on STW).

Work phone, work contacts, work to-do lists etc. Home phone, personal contacts, yadda yadda. Mixing the two might work for some but I like having them separate. I carry two phones at work, and one out of work.

I did. Went for a single work phone - Desire S on which I can load apps, etc. If it was locked down, I'd still be getting my own phone.

I have two Crackberries. 😳

One for work, and one personal one. Simply means that I can turn off the work one when I'm not working and ignore work. A dual sim or single phone for both will always leave you the option of "just having a look" which means that you end up answering a work email from beneath the palm trees as you sip your piña colada*

*The only place a man is ever allowed to sip a piña colada is on a beach, under palm trees. This is the law.

Probably to stop you doing exactly what you're proposing, because diverted calls incur phone charges (it's as though you've placed a separate call to forward it).

Same for me as the Captain

I decided earlier in the year to get myself a personal phone after using my work phone solely for the last few years, still a great feeling at 5 on a Friday to turn the work phone off until the Monday and even better when your on a long holiday, worth the £25 a month easy in my eyes

I have 2. A work BB and a personal HTC desire HD. The first is all paid for and I pay £10 a month for the HTC (got it via work )

Pain having 2 but good for holidays when I dont want calls every hour from work and I give my team my personal number in case there is something serious that I would want to know about (does not apply if I am out of the UK)

I have a work iPhone, which is great for games but shite for actually being a phone so also have a pay-as-you-go personal phone from Tesco (was about £25) that I take with me on the bike etc. or if I need a long battery life somewhere (camping etc.)

I am running two at the moment and it is good to turn the work one off after hours but what i tend to do is leave the personal one at home because carrying two is just wrong and I have started to use the work one for personal stuff as it is the one I have on me most of the time.

I’m still thinking go with one but all arguments for two are valid and it is a right pain changing your number so what ever I go with I will stick with. Decisions don’t get bigger…

Same as cougar here. One for work one for personal! Don't want the boss getting moody when I'm sending texts to my mate in oz so it's the best option for me. Plus it's a handy back up device both ways round as all personal and work contacts are stored one both.

On a smartphone? You and him/her should download WhatsApp...it's awesome.

If you don't make many calls on the personal phone, why not just get a cheaper sim only contract or change it to pay as you go. It shouldn't cost you much just to keep the number for incoming calls and a few outgoing calls.

If you go sim-only, you can get contracts that are pretty cheap (like £10 a month or less), or if you really don't use it much, pay as you go is pretty darned cheap nowadays. You can move your number over (although on some stupid networks you have to switch network to go from contract to pay as you go) .

I tried the two phones approach for the reasons mentioned above. I've got to say it was a pain, especially since my work mobile is ace and my personal one is rubbish. I use one phone now and just rely on discipline not to check work emails and answer work calls on hols or at the weekend. It did backfire once. I was on my way to the Alps in the back of a bumpy Land Rover having a "system down" conversation with a customer one Saturday 🙁

I had 2 mobiles - 1 for the GF abroad -saved me a fortune text/calls

and the other for everything else U.K.

Although now the internet VO3g saves me loads on text and emails the calls are rubbish when driving.

Otherwise carrying two mobiles was a pain unless you have a man-bag etc.

I have a bumberry for work and an iphone for personal use. Probably wouldn't have bothered with my own phone but like others i'm not allowed to put 3td party apps on it plus it's only plain 3g so internet is slow.

Identical to me. Work phone is for talkin on. Nothing more. It's turned off/ignored when not at work, and NOBODY at work has my personal number, and that's the way it stays!

i have 2, work and personal iphone.

Basically work phone is forwarded to my iphone all the time - unless I'm on a long period of leave.

I dont use all my minutes up anyway on my personal contract so use it for business outbound calls.

Means i can do what i want on my phone - browse stw etc all day when im at work lol.

Pretty much what I did 2 months ago, I've had a mobile phone since they stopped being "portables" but that was always supplied by work so every time the mobile rang I was expecting it to be work 🙁

In the end I got a Nokia 3270 & a £10 a month T-Mobile sim 100 minutes 100 texts & unlimited internet.
Its only friends on that phone so I don't get that sinking feeling when it rings.

I had 2 phones for a few years. It was a pita remembering 2 chargers etc when I was travelling.
I now have 1 phone which I use for work and play. It's really not difficult to ignore work calls with this new fangled caller ID and assigned ring tones.
I am self employed though, so I call more of the shots.
