Got some friends over from the States in a couple of weeks. They're only here for 4 nights and we're happy showing them delights of NE Fife, but fancy an overnight trip into the Highlands. We're thinking lochs, mountains, coastline, bit of fishing maybe, possibly a boat trip, and good food & a dram or three next to a log fire on the evening.
Where would the STW massive suggest to tick off as many boxes as possible?
Glencoe/ballachuillish.
Depends how much of your time you want to spend driving. If you do the road trip as part of the break then heading through Glencoe, Fort William and up to Kintail to Applecross would do it for me. Possibly back through Skye (the Yanks all love Skye).
OTOH if they are into Outlander (worth asking) then Newtonmore, Culloden and Inverness would be high on their wish list.
If you were after a recommendation for one hotel it would be the Sheildaig Lodge at Badachro. That would give you a trip through Torridon too.
Or Arran. Less travelling, more time doing the stuff you want. Gimme an email if he want accommodation suggestions. Met some Californians (LA) on Arean this year. They were infatuated.
Don't mind the drive. It's a bit dull between here and the other side of Perth, but after that the journey is half of why the Highlands are spectacular. I'd probably draw the line at anything too much over 5 hours, so Applecross is out, and I'm not sure the ferry timetables suit an overnight stop so probably not Arran either. I do love Arran though - we've friends with a cottage on the beach at Kildonan. If there's somewhere similar on the mainland then I reckon that would be it.
Ferries run from 7 in the morning til 9 at night. What time would you want? Crabbing at Lamlash pier, followed by dinner in the drift inn is a joy.....
Maidens down by turnberry.
Loads of places to camp, awesome coves and beaches, wildings for dinner, turnberry for afternoon tea, Culzean castle for the Eisenhower suite.....
Dunure 5 minutes up the road too, amazing wee harbour.
Just had a look at Glencoe/Ballachulish area, found somewhere just down the road at Kentallan. I think we have a winner. Cheers.
Good stuff.
