Away with work for a night in a hotel in Cheadle.

Injury means no bike.
Sobriety means no booze.
Works laptop means no interesting internet.

For the last 30 odd years I just went to the bar, talked twaddle with strangers and drank until passing out time. Somehow I don't think that will work while cradling a glass of water.

What do you do in such situations? I could read a book but sat on a bed for 6 hours reading before I doze off is not the rock and roll lifestyle I am used to. What do 'normal folk' do in these situations?

Watch a film? Go for a walk? Call an escort?

Back in the old days when I actually had to leave home to do work, I’d take a kindle, walk into the nearest town (because you could almost guarantee the cheapest premier inn was way out of the centre), find myself a pizza express or similar and spend 60-90 minutes reading and slowly eating.

I’ve been known to visit the cinema on my own to.

And if I can guarantee half decent internet I would take my Xbox.

Worst case, 6 hours on the bed reading.

I started asking for airbnbs instead as it was cheaper and usually better. Do my own cooking, eat better, sit on a comfy sofa, watch tv etc etc. just like being at home but without the children.

Cheadle Village? If yes, don’t miss the Indian Tiffin Rooms. If you are a light sleeper, pack your earplugs as you’re right on the flight path for the airport for a lot of Cheadle/Cheadle Hulme, Cheadle Heath. Sorry.

I am not a great film watcher, I think Waterworld was the last one I went to the cinema for and can't remember when I turned the TV on if I was on my own.

Walking is limited by knackered ankle but I guess I could go for a blast in the car - I wonder what late night Manchester is like in an over-powered black Mercedes convertible. I am sure it will be fine.

Call and escort is probably not going to end well as the four broken ribs haven't fully healed yet.

Chess might be an option. I guess the work laptop won't block every chess computer website. I guess I could combine that with the worlds slowest meal to kill a couple of hours.

Walk along the Mersey? No good if ankle is knackered.

10 pin bowling in parrs wood?

Take a bike and head out into the peak?

Didsbury dozen? No good if not drinking

Tiffin rooms sounds like a good option if you like Indian food

Hammer the car up and down the a34 race track?

Not sure if 10 pin bowling works on your own. Never played before so don't know if solo bowling is a thing

Impromptu art fair in the foyer?

Tempting. I have a new goldfish to sell

I lost my licence on the A34 as the very nice policeman explained that I wasn't driving dangerously just a bit too fast

I'm just sticking Blade Runner Black Lotus on the telly, if you're quick I'm a 5 minute walk up the road and I'll put the kettle on!

Bit late now but La Cueva is ace for tapas.

I've been for many a random run or walk around strange* places.
Highlights include getting lost in Dudley on a cold night in shorts and thermal top, running out of daylight on Rosile beach and meeting an old uni friend unexpectedly in Inverness.

.
.
Strange as in unfamiliar, although Ayr and Eastleigh do qualify as "strange".

Me too. Some Cuban underground dance club in New York after getting a bit too chummy with a group in a restaurant in the Village. My colleagues last saw me disappear with three guys and two women in some dodgy cars waving goodbye happily saying I would catch them in the office in the morning. I turned up the next morning feeling a little tired after about 6 hours dancing to find they were about to call the police to report me kidnapped

Take ear plugs, you'll need them with the aircraft noise. Are you allowed to swim as they have a pool.

WCA by all means, drop me a message. I'm pretty good at monosyllabic utterances.

If you're up early enough, bruntwood Park is okay for a walk and has a bmx track to look at!

The village hotel pool is pretty good. In fact my youngest will be swimming there tomorrow night. I'll be at Projekts in Manchester with my eldest daughter until 730. Good place to watch for great skating, though Thursday is ladies night so not appropriate to rock up and gawp!

tinder, like the escort, will not be gentle on the ribs. Same goes for Grinder before you mention it.

I will take my swimming trunks and do my best walrus impression while banging out a few miles. Should be gentle on the ribs and kill and hour or so.

This sounds like the opposite end of the spectrum from when you were up in Manchester and we did a tour of the single malts at the Britons Protection. I had no recollection of getting home 😳

I'll come and meet for a swift pint.

I'll be wearing the red carnation.

Or a nicolai cap, whichever comes to hand when leaving the house!

Part of the Range Rover shuttle districts. Dull and pretentious in equal measure.

Does have a decent BMX track, a cycle network that links to equally dull suburbs and unremarkable parks.

Edit: There's a nice set of office suites next to the bypass and John Lewis down the road.

I've started taking my bikepacking stove, some pasta, etc when working away. If it's dry, have a walk/run, then cook dinner in the local park.
Think the previously mentioned BMX track (bruntswood IIRC) is in a decent sized park.

Also read about people learning to ride unicycles in hotel rooms while working away.

That's my neck of the woods! Turquoise is nice for food, so's the aforementioned Indian Tiffin Rooms, Jackson's does a good takeaway breakfast for the morning.

The bairns also do swimming lessons at the Village hotel, seems like there's a STW meet-up there most weeks and we never knew!

I am safely back in sunny Southampton.

What happened in Cheadle, stays in Cheadle.

Don't worry Twistie, I won't tell a soul.

Also - looks like there might be a one night in Cheadle - part two in a couple of weeks. The bloody customer liked what I was proposing.
