I don't think it's only adults. Children and cats also seem to appreciate the value of cardboard boxes. Obviously size matters.

Aah, sensitive subject. I have a 'bag' of cables that has essentially become a birds nest nearly a metre across. The bag fell away a long time ago, Now just a maddening brain of possibilities, The cable you seek may be there, but a day will be lost trying to extract it to find out. You can see the end of the right cable... help me.

Ziplock bags. Dozens of them in all sizes. Saved from anything which comes in one, 'in case it comes in useful' which to be fair they occasionally do.

All of the above (at least 3 nokias, including a carphone cradle and speaker setup)

I actively try and not keep stuff but it still accumulates somehow. A drawer in the living room full of random wires, remotes for things I swear I’ve never owned and novelty USB sticks that I don’t recall ever buying. Plus a drawer in the shed that’s full of random tat. I’m sure somebody breaks in and refills it all

Keeping a really good cardboard box because you could end up living in it

I had a good sort out in the garage this summer and put up a load more shelving units. My solution was to use the boxes 'that might come in handy' to store the wire 'that might come in handy' as well as copper + plastic pipe, tile off cuts, various tapes (electrical, masking, packaging, etc..), old inner tubes, old kitchen electricals and the rest.

Still seem to have accumulated a ton more cardboard and packaging that's stored in a huge bike box that's now swamping all the space I made!

Mrs Scape hates my cardboard box habit. However, I have several pastimes where stuff gets bought, and later upgraded. It’s so simple to pack whatever I’ve sold back into its retail packaging and bung it in the post together with any original receipts, warranty cards, instructions, spares and accessories. So I’ve an entire section of storage shelving with boxes from microphones, guitar pedals, telescopic sights, binoculars, mounts, lamps, watches , mobile phones, well you get the picture!

Lol to this… only last night I was looking at 3 banana boxes on top of my wardrobe that were used when I moved flat last December

It seems such a shame to get rid … they will surely be useful 1 day 🤔

I got rid of some boxes the other week.......you know what's coming don't you......

.....then I sold a frame and didn't have one to fit!! Had to fashion packaging out of a box I'd got from a blind we'd had delivered that was the wrong size, so was waiting to see if they wanted it back when they sent another out. Fortunately they didn't.

Always keep a good range of good quality boxes.

It's not just an adult thing.
My 8 year old daughter gets a bit upset if I throw out any cardboard box or tube, as it can be saved for "art". I have to sneak them into the recycling.

Last Christmas, when 7 she asked for cardboard boxes from Father Christmas (she meant moving box type) and was genuinely amazed and delighted when a stack of about 15 of them appeared on the spare bed (I have a friend with a shoe import and online sale business hence has a near-infinite supply). Cue building of the "cardboard box house" which by the time we were done probably needed planning permission and a structural once-over.

I used to mull over with incredulity that i was now keeping a box of receipts. From about 16-22 i was homeless and then in the social work system, hostels and the like until i settled a bit, got the first bedsit and bought personal items for it. I remember thinking how strange it was to have to keep such things safe.

Yeah I can relate to all the above, I have a box in the garage full of cut up inner tubes, some old well used gear cable and some old contaminated brake pads.. because.. well they may just get somebody home from a ride.

I have to sneak things in the recycling aswell, my 4 year old daughter loves doing art and crafts, got a whole set of plastic drawers full of cut up paper, bits of boxes, twigs and leaves. Every time we go near hobbycraft I get stung for something. Last week was beads and braided decorative rope to make bracelets and necklaces.

I have 2 bags of tubes, one is knackered for the recycling bin at decathlon and the other is stupid heavyweight DH tubes I keep meaning to sell to other tubes.

Also have too much "useful" stuff that will get passed on eventually. Soon. Please gods.

And boxes. So. Many. Boxes.

try living in an old house in the middle of renovating. Not only do you have a room full of boxes that contain tools, but I have an entire room full of wood that we have saved/reclaimed that might come in handy later. And a workshop that has a shelf I made to hold bits of wood that might come in handy.

Oddly, I built the shelf out of bits of wood from the pile of bits of wood (that might come in handy), so it did actually come in handy. And also allowed us to store more wood (in case it comes in handy).

I get really scared of using some of the wood I have the might come in handy, as once used I will not have that bit of handy wood anymore. Best get some more wood that might come in handy...

I actually built a wood shead out of might come in handy wood, the. Added a lean-to to store more might come in handy wood.

The cable you seek may be there

It won't. The bundle/bag/box of cables consists of obselete standards like USB-A, Mini HDMI, Nokia standard chargers, serial cable adapters, parallel printer cables, that kind of thing.

I have a huge tub of probably redundant electrical bits. I am totally clueless as to which device half of my cables fit. But I can't throw any away, because sod's law states that if I do, the next day I will have some random gadget from the 90s plonked in front of me and told to go find its cable.

If anyone needs a decent boot box and sturdy postage box that it came in, collection from CW8 tonight, or it's being flattened and going in the recycling.

OOOOh, vindicated! I had to return a thermal spotter yesterday for warranty repair. It went back in the original retail box, complete with foam cutout padding and a scan of the original sales receipt. Smug? Moi?

Hmmm When I scampered out of the country I filled 3 skiploads of accumulated Shite,It's amazing how much crap you can accumulate over the years if you have the space to store it.

And annoyingly the only box I couldn't find was the one I wanted to package up the telly.
