You chaps seem to be very knowledgeable in these things so hopefully someone may be able to point me in the right direction here.

I was given an old Omega Seamaster DeVille watch by a client as a Thank you gift but I have no idea what to do with it nor any inclination to wear it, it is not my 'thing' really.

It is a 60's 562 automatic movement. The case is in good condition, the glass/plastic face is not. The second hand is missing as is the side knob. I have not tried to get it working so have no idea if it is functional....

It is a beautiful looking thing and, as I understand, highly regarded. My question is what do I do with it? The service cost is fairly pricey and imagine it will need some parts so could start getting expensive.... Would I be best selling as is or??

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I have pics but can't work out how to get them up here.....

If its a beautiful looking thing why would you not wear it?
Not worth a lot unfortunately, especially in that condition. Parts arent that hard to come by, should be able to get it serviced and sorted with a new plexiglass for around £120 at a guess, depending on hands. crown likely to be a further £80 ish. Might drop lucky and find a watchmaker with one to fit in the spares box. Probably worth similar to sell so choice is yours really... but if you wont wear it and it has no sentiment to you you may as well move it on.

Pics would help!

I don't wear a watch.....

Thanks for the info, kind of what I thought really. I'm in no rush to do anything with it, asked more out of interest.

With a few £ spent, it should turn out to be a nice old thing.

My recollection is that these do not have a seconds hand - I had the same watch many years ago.

Missing crown and stem should not be an issue to get correct.

Sent it to a decent watch repairer, get a new strap (try Cousins) and hunt down an appropriate Omega storage box and it will be a nice thing to own.

Any of these guys will do a good job....

Guessing this is what it should look like(albeit the dial has a slightly different finish).

So your missing the seconds hand and the surround to the date wheel, as well as the crown.
Case is a bit chewed up to.

Personally I would only spend the money fixing it up if I either intended to keep it and wear it or it had sentimental value, from your post it doesnt really sound like either apply.

Thanks guys.... As I expected really.

Seems a shame to just throw it in a drawer when someone may get some use from it.

I'll put it up on eBay and see what comes of it, will be something to add to the kids travel fund if nothing else.

Thanks again

Not a seamaster but I love my '73 Deville automatic.

It was passed down from my great uncle so has sentimental value. I'm wearing it today as we have family here for lunch.

Just curious - why don’t you wear a watch?
I have a friend who doesn’t and when I asked him how he knows what the time is he said he just checks his phone. Really! A bit of a hassle I would have thought - one of the reasons the wrist watch replaced the pocket watch way back.

Just curious – why don’t you wear a watch?

A few reasons.... Safety, habit, no real need and I just don't like having things on my wrists.

I own a sawmill and joinery business and a watch can get caught or snagged on timber or machinery. I used to but ripped so many off that I just stopped wearing them.... Then got used to not wearing them.

I also don't like constantly clock watching, most of the time it doesn't matter, i'm on my own schedule, no set timings to keep to.
