A few mates are all turning 60 this year, so I figured that I would make each of them a gift. One thing that we all have in common is a particular liking of one of the cafes on the Passportes du Soleil tour, Refuge de Cheserey.

Plan is to make a finger post pointing to the refuge for each persons garden, complete with distance. So far so good but I would really like to make it from either a piece of the refuge itself (wholly impractical), some wood from the area (very impractical) or from some wood that is 60 years old. So- where do I go to get wood that is genuinely from 1962? I'm stumped tbh.

I phoned one local salvage place and was pretty much laughed at for asking such a daft question.

Precisely 1962? Tough one. Enough old wood for a handful of finger signs should be possible with a bit of skip diving. I have about 6m2 of old floorboards in the garage, though they might be closer to 1862.

1962 is pretty important- it was a good vintage as far as I'm concerned. Alternatively, can anyone think of another aspect that could be used to tie the signs together? The friendship is decades old.

Keep cutting down trees and counting rings until you find one that is 62.

How many do you need? I have a few logs out back dating from 1962 - £20 each 😉

Oooh- how old are the Tweed valley plantations?

If you can track them down, old wooden wine crates have the year stamped on them too.

You can add a (framed?) cycling mag from the year too if funds permit.

Oh poo!

I find posting pics a pain in the bum tbh. And I'm off to Portugal in the morning so you will all just have to wait a little bit I'm afraid. Sorry and all that.

Ambrose
