You see it all on the M5/A30 heading to Cornwall this time of year.

I saw a canadian canoe tied directly onto the roof of car the other day....

Folks have roof boxes these days. I remember as kid the suitcases that were tied to the roof of my old man's mini 1000 auto decorating three lanes of the M6. Good times.

“Roof basket” these days. Thule and others sell posh aluminium ones.

Funny I was having the very same conversation in the car with two employees on Friday- as a kid a suitcase full (or empty of) clothes on the motorway was normal when I was I kid , as was plastic bags and bungee ropes holding it all in. Not these days - it’s all about £300 roofboxes.

I mean, I know that pretty much everything peaked in the 1970s... but perhaps roof boxes are just a better solution?

Anyway - bungee rope? You ponce! In my day we had that blue nylon rope that cuts your hands. We used it to attach spades to the roof of my dad’s moped. Then we went on holiday to an inner city tip and used the spades to help bury dirty nappies.

the roof of my dad’s moped.

Moped? Roof?

Luxury!

We had to  wheel our parents to the workhouse in a wheel barrow with a flat tyre and a squeaky wheel whilst simultaneously delivering coal. We then had to pick them up at the end of their 28 hour working day whilst on our Chinese takeaway delivery rounds.

Uphill both ways.

FIt and watch the fuel burn away.  I reckon they must be good for adding 20% to any journey cost.

I've got a great big roof rack that was off a Mk4 Cortina estate, suspended (tie wrapped) above head height to 2 beams across the garage. It's been up there over 20 years and has collected all sorts of rubbish.

Pah, I saw a car in Castleford the other day waiting to pull out from next to the river with a massive inflatable dingy one the roof only held on by, the drivers right arm and the passengers left arm stuck out of the windows!!

Great to hear some are still knocking about. Part of me would love to get one.. Just not sure I could handle the ridicule 😉

I saw a canadian lashed to the top of a Cashcow car in Aberfeldy, direct on the paint. Apparently the car made it to Loch Tay - the canoe was found in a hedge by someone from a local outdoor centre who was following down the road a few mins later...

If done right the only real advantage of a rack when it comes to canoe carrying is to have handy places to tie down..... Won't be the first time I've tied down through open doors and windows in a bind.  Unfortunately most folks tying on skills lack any kind of usefulness.

As for the 20% more fuel..... Better than the other option that it seems most folk on the road these days take. 60% more car than they need for 80% of their journeys in which case a small car and roof rack or trailer make total sense..... But don't ever suggest that to someone as the fact they might have to on paper slow down by 10mph will offend

I've strapped a bike directly to the roof of a car before - bars twisted, straps through the door frames, jobs a goodun. You can even turn it upside down if you're fussy about the paint, but you have to lash it a bit more carefully then

saw a car on the little bit of dual carriageway on the isle of wight a couple of yrs ago. Had car long (it was a mk 1 Sierra or something) lengths of skirting boards on the roof rack and nothing holding it on but the bloke in the back seat with his arm out of the window holding it on. I overtook him as fast as my old ford ranger would take me...!
