Soooooooooo, I found out yesterday that my wife decided, some time ago, within the last 2 years, that all our music CDs would be better in a large storage case ... good idea I said at the time. BUT unknown to me she also did all my old PC games, yep just the CDs! So I've not got any CD keys for about 20 games. :-/

Are these now completely useless? Is there any way I can access the keys from the discs? Or, anything thing else?

I don't have an up to date PC and unlikely to get one for a while. My old PC went pop a few months ago but someone has an old one that would work so I was hoping to just load my old games on it to play on (have a work laptop for internet etc.)

What keys do you need? I have various keys that should still work.

Do you still have the HDD from the old PC?

gog.com may be an option? You can pick up old games for a couple of quid, DRM-free and patched to run on modern hardware.

Cracks / serials for CD-based games are probably readily available on the Internet, with the obvious caveat that they might also come with free viruses and turn your PC into a Russian botnet server.

Also - are you sure they all need actually keys, have you tried them?

That may take some explaining if the search history ever gets out

So where is “the large storage case”?

Isn't that a line from a Talking Heads song?

Wait, was the storage case large, yellow and on the road outside your house?

I'm guessing the storage case is a CD wallet and the helpful partner has put the game discs into it and thrown the cases and inserts away, the bits the keys are usually printed on.

I've still got the hdd from the old pc, read something about using the registry to get the old keys but not sure how many of the games I had on that pc.
Some games:
Soldier of fortune 2
COD modern warfare 2
IL2 sturmovic plus add-ons
HL2 orange box plus HL1 and others
Lock on
Wings over Europe
Gunman Chronicles
Far cry
Far cry 2

Haven't played most for a while so thought it would be a bit of fun during lock down, some of those games were great fun, can probably get them cheap on download now but it'll be a while before I can get a decent new pc.

Haven't tried them yet to see if they install, might try that on the wife's laptop then at least I'll know, I'm sure it won't be any good to play them as it's very basic.

Yep, a large cd/DVD storage case thing, so all boxes cd cases gone!

If they are installed, could try Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder. It is able to find keys in the registry etc. Not sure if it supports many games. https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
There is also a paid for version, apparently supports a lot more software.

For Half Life, is it linked to a Steam account? If so, you should be able to login to that account, then download and install it from there.

Yup, all the Valve stuff will be linked to your Steam account I'd be surprised if you hadn't installed Steam by the point Orange Box came out.

Fraid I can't help with the rest, too modern for my shelves.
