Hi All,
My wife is currently not working and has gone past the 6 months during which she was paid Jobseeker’s Allowance (contribution based).
Her old style student loan needs to be deferred as she doesn’t earn above the threshold but the issue is that she doesn’t get anything at all. No benefits or anything - we don’t have kids and I earn too much to get any sort of universal credit (tried an online calculator to check).
So all we have is her p45 from HMRC which details the Jobseekers she got up to Jan this year.
There’s nothing on the deferment form which talks about zero income. However it does say “income to not exceed £2553 and is above the minimum benefit level set by DWP”. What on Earth does that mean? Could it mean as she gets nothing she has to repay? I am positive they can’t use my income to assess her loan payments.
Can’t seem to get a call back from SLC about this and we can’t afford for the payments to start coming out of our account!!
Surely someone else must have been in the same position?
ring the SLC and stay on the phone, I have always got through, even if I have had to wait 15mins but I have always found the person on the end to be helpful.
I had a period when I was on reduced days, with reduced pay, and they were happy to explain everything to me
Managed to get sorted. Basically all I have to do it write a letter saying I am supporting my wife but at a level lower than the threshold amount. I’ve done that and am sending the letter off.
