the funny new arrangement with post /thread history is a bit of a conversation killer too. You can’t readily see what conversations you’ve been a part of and whether they’ve moved on- I just forget.
+1 🙂
You’re having a giraffe surely? Cycle chats forum is horrid, moving avatars, sub forums to make sure everyone knows their niche… Terrible
It had something pretty special for a while, but it's been wrecked by dismal moderation. I've given up on it. Anyway, it gave me the Friday Night Ride to the Coast, and I will always be grateful for that.
Anyway up or down this place has been through worse so it will survive waiting on software patches.
Oh really, what period has been worse?
Something like 1% of the members post 90% of the threads, so if you remove just a few then that has a big impact.
The atmosphere on here seems much more pleasant at the moment. Absolute post churn might be down but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I feel more inclined to join in than I have for years, not that I'm ever likely to be a massive poster, don't have the time, but it does seem a nicer place to be.
I’m sure the busiest thread on here these days is the ‘forum problems’ thread
And most responses are from people getting frustrated ie “how do you do this”, “oh this is trollocks”
Would be a shame for this forum to go. The best bits are the non cycling bits, but I guess that doesn’t sell cycling advertisements. But if this place was just a cycling forum it would have died many years ago
I don’t know what kind of poster I would be classified as, but I do know that my history has always been a bit ‘ebb and flow’, while the forum has gone through periodic dry spells, as well as cranky ones.
Mostly Harmless? 🙂
Seems to cover the vast majority of us.
However, the last post thing being based on individual history rather than individual conversations is a killer. Especially if you have the memory of a goldfish like me.
The formatting issues are my biggest gripe at the mo and I delete more posts than I submit.
Gloaters or butt lickers? What’s worse?
I'm one of those annoying people who try and see the best in everyone. I live near STW towers and often see people out and about.
I like this place and the attitude of the mods, even though I don't think I've met any of them. They seem to be decent people doing their best, so I'll keep defending them until they prove otherwise.
If that's arse licking, so be it.
Above post edited 3 times to attempt to remove the html nonsense.
Still not showing the last text I inserted, so I've put it in a new post.
That's what will kill this place unless it gets fixed. How many people just can't be arsed anymore?
Not just the cynical oldies, but new people too.
Yeah but even if the forum gets worse we'll all keep paying for the online content and magazine..
Won't we ? Surely..... we will.... that's what they tell us 🙂
It's the only mag I buy, apart from 'Bike'.
The P makes it cheaper and I get more editorial content, so if the issues on here don't get fixed I'll probably stick to reading the mag and just give this place a swerve.
I could cancel everything and read most of it for free, but they deserve a chance to get it working properly.
In the case of it not getting fixed, if any local P subscribers would care to pass on the mag when they've finished with it, I'm sure we could come to some arrangement, charity donation, few beers etc.
That would be a last resort, but there's always a way.
Just the three edits this time.
it's an interesting one. I'm certainly feeling it's quieter. Back in the day a Peaks Pootle mention would elicit a lot of conversation. Likewise Cut Gate. Both formerly busy posts now disappear without a blip on the radar.
It does feel like the atmosphere has changed a lot. Maybe it's me that's changed.
I used to help moderate a forum, and it's a thankless task. As a whole, the folk tend to behave on here, but where I moderated there was a sub-culture of abuse that was quickly picked up on before many of the users saw it (some terrible stuff went on)
People moan about moderation, but seeing what goes on behind closed doors, you soon realise just how nasty some folk are. Mods took alot of abuse as we couldn't just ban someone - ideally many would have been banned. I gave up on the forum for quite some time but it's changed massively, and is pretty quiet now as certain 'parts' of the forum were removed by the 'owner' as it was detracting from cycling (and lead to most of the nastyness and fairly serious abuse).
Forum traffic goes up and down.
People moan about moderation, but seeing what goes on behind closed doors, you soon realise just how nasty some folk are.
That cuts both ways. I've seen some pretty poor behaviour from moderators towards long standing forum members.
It's not just that things are changing, features getting lost and not getting replaced, things are breaking randomly too. So weird. I bet nobody knows why.
Anyone tried posting (embedding) a video since the weekend?
Numbers down?
i blame the lack of poop gags.
and if the numbers* continue to drop, the mods will have us fill out a ten-page questionnaire.
*unless of course, they're number two's:)
If someone can quote this: 💩, then there’s a chance of a very big poo for iPad users
Testing.. 1..2.............

I can't even quote successfully. But apparently I can make a massive poo emoji

Well after a couple of weeks the redirects/virus warnings are back today using this site on the PC.
This is rubbish.
And now on my PC rather than just on my phone.
Never had that before, which is worrying.
I'm going to pop into the office this week and try and take Mark up on his offer.
Let us have Friday Kylie back and everything will be well with the world again!!
You should be so lucky.

No. You're never getting Friday Kylie back. But you can have Misogynist Monday instead. It's a thread wherein you express your admiration for/sexual attraction to members of the opposite sex and in response a secret cabal of PC Priests who frequent the forum will admonish you for being a woman hating Harvey Weinstein-esque serial abuser who probably voted leave in the EU Referendum too.
That’s what will kill this place unless it gets fixed. How many people just can’t be arsed anymore?
Not just the cynical oldies, but new people too.
Yeah, I didn't even read your post 😉
Right, let's try again.
I've mailed markalker@singletrackmag.com.
Anyone know if this is the right address?
It is but he’s not at the office this week. Try Tom@
Ta Drac, will do.
Re: people not starting new threads.
I would have started a thread or two over the last week but I can't figure out how to get pictures to work so haven't bothered! I did leave for a little bit while the updates got sorted but now it's seemingly running ok I've wandered back, that and having a few bits to sell. Will have a go at pictures soon, unless anyone can give a quick walkthrough on how to post form Flickr on a desktop!
If posting was easier with pictures, gifs etc a lot more of the banter would surface.

+2 - Would love the summary page back
Rusty, it's mark@ or if you want to talk to the devs then tech@
@mike I suggested a tricks & tips thread a little while ago and it went down like Gillian Taylfoth in a lay-by, so I never bothered.
On the whole you can generally post pics just by right-clicking the image, copying the URL and then pasting it into the editor. Flickr does seem to be wilfully obtuse though, the simplest way might just be to host the images elsewhere (I use imgur and it's painless).

+3 Some user friendly way of keeping tabs on threads I've posted on is sadly missed by me. The posts made alternative is poor from this users point of view

Does that mean very well or that you are denying it ever happened?
Pinkbike or places the link ends in .jpeg

Just paste in the thread
Flickr Desktop

Paste the address of the photo page - Used to work
The Jpeg link should or something is broken

Is it not just one of those things you just do rather than ask?

Flickr was painless for a bit allowing just about any combination of image containing URL, now along with the Video/Instagram features they have all stopped working.
You should be so lucky
Deserves recognition 😀
Have emailed Tom.
I'd post more If I wasn't logged out half the time
Testing.
EDIT. Does seem to be borked now.
I added pics from flickr this morning by just using the BBCode option from flickr. Not sure why its so difficult?

I may have got the wrong end of the stick though as I haven't read this whole thread.
<em class="bbcode-em">Not sure why its so difficult?
The way it worked before now doesn't, it was simpler for a lot of things and worked for other platforms before the last few days.
I wonder sometimes why people get so bothered about the the number of “posts” and “posters” on the forum.
Because I used to find loads of threads on here fascinating, and would contribute to. Most days I now struggle to find anything I'm interested in.
sorry, I was replying to...
Oh yeah, pics are a lot easier to post than they were before (until that breaks! lOlZ) - plus you can change sizes of the pics, instead of posting huge great jobbies (no, thanks not again) you can edit the properties - unless you're on an iPad whereby the edit dialogue goes a bit random and unusable (although I found last night jabbing my finger in random places on the screen make it available. It's awesome really)
Let us have Friday Kylie back and everything will be well with the world again!!
If only there were some other way of viewing pictures of her.
If only there were some other way
But how would you know other people were looking at the same time, getting a synchronised phwoar is tough
But how would you know other people were looking at the same time, getting a synchronised phwoar is tough
The chances of someone else in the world looking at a picture of Kylie at the same time? Vanishingly unlikely, I'm sure.
Because I used to find loads of threads on here fascinating, and would contribute to. Most days I now struggle to find anything I’m interested in.
true dat!

That statement doesnt really answer the question ...
That statement doesnt really answer the question …
Is it possible that the quantity of posts and posters can be related to the number of interesting posts available to read?
It's obvious dilution imo, the aim of the mods etc was to dilute the forums and dilute they have, this is the result.
patriotpro
I am sure its much more cock up than conspiracy
Two of the bannees I know off forum. Both had been vociferous, forthright and direct* on the various update threads and one of them does this sort of stuff for a living. The mods were I am sure getting somewhat exasperated with the situation and snapped and banned them both. perhaps harshly perhaps not depending where you are sitting. Its a shame as both brought much.
As for post count. Its obviously down and I find less stuff to engage with. I suspect the forum is big enough to survive but no doubt its wounded.
* or noisy and objectionable 😉
My biggest gripe with the new forum is that I can't see posts that I have commented on any more. Before I could comment on something that interested me and a few days or a week later I could quickly check out if there had been any replies in the "threads started" and "threads commented on". Losing this functionality is a big loss to how useful the forum is to me.
EDIT...oops. thought I had best check and this functionality has been reinstated to some degree!
I added pics from flickr this morning by just using the BBCode option from flickr. Not sure why its so difficult?
Doesn't work properly for me any more, you get extraneous XML after the picture e.g.

Actually, that is a bit better than it was, still got url= garbage there
Being redirected to really quite dodgy phishing sites by the ropey ads here would be my guess for people leaving. Even as a subscriber I'm automatically logged out once a week so have to run the gauntlet just to log in again.
The dilution intent was made quite clear some time ago, the result is what you have now. Perfect example being this thread would been in to 5 pages now as it's provocative.
What's left now is the creation of the mods so hardly an accident. Would be interesting to hear if they are happy with the result...

This has never been a thing at all sorry to shatter your illusion.

That’s their version of it and given the number of complaints we’ve received over the years for them and the number of warnings they’ve it was only ever going to go one way.
EDIT…oops. thought I had best check and this functionality has been reinstated to some degree!
They have just messed with the font size really though, still doesn't tell you what the previous version did...
No illusion to be shattered so no need to apologise drac.
I suppose as long as you getting the desired site 'impresssions' though, that's the main thing to anyone with vested interests in relation to advertising revenue, etc.
You keep believing that then Patriotpro.
That’s their version of it and given the number of complaints we’ve received over the years for them and the number of warnings they’ve it was only ever going to go one way.
It's always good for moderators to discuss banned members, seeing as they can't answer back.
So I should just let TJ tell misconceptions then, again, no I don’t think so.
It’s always good for moderators to discuss banned members
... anonymously.
We've discouraged people from discussing banned members in the past for exactly that reason, it's not fair.
Can't we have a list of banned members? Cause I haven't got a clue who's been banned!
Having said that, I haven't seen Junky around for a while or THM!
So I should just let TJ tell misconceptions then, again, no I don’t think so.
He's giving his opinion. You are giving yours. You could choose to say that you won't discuss it further.
… anonymously.
We’ve discouraged people from discussing banned members in the past for exactly that reason, it’s not fair.
You're right that it's not fair, so stop doing it. And please stop the pretence that it's anonymous, you know perfectly well that names have been quoted recently.
My view really not theirs Drac and I see your comments as fair enough. I obviously don't know your viewpoint.. One of them is claiming " no prior warnings" but thin ice is obvious - certainly in hindsight. 😉 And yes discussing banned members is fruitless.
Until you offer up a something else drac, i'll have to i suppose.
tbh it's no biggy but you should be grateful of the speculation, at least it's racking up thread count!
you know perfectly well that names have been quoted recently.
We can't control others' speculations. We've not mentioned any names (or confirmed any, for that matter).
In any case, I can't see an issue with saying "a couple of users have been banned following multiple warnings." Why else would we ban people? .About the only other thing I can think of is gross misconduct.
My view really not theirs Drac and I see your comments as fair enough
Probably best you stop then as it’s twice I’ve had to correct you now.
What am I supposed to offer Patriotpro you’ve claimed that mods have some form of conspiracy going on to dilute the forums, I’ve told it’s not true.
You are giving <span class="skimlinks-unlinked">yours.You</span> could choose to say that you won’t discuss it further.
Or I could correct him.
Or I could correct him.
You have already had your say. My opinion is that it's really poor behaviour from a moderator.
We can’t control others’ speculations. We’ve not mentioned any names (or confirmed any, for that matter).
It's hardly speculation, as you know.
In any case, I can’t see an issue with saying “a couple of users have been banned following multiple warnings.”
Thats not all that was said, as you know.
O hai guys!
I see this thread is going exactly as expected.
So what if numbers are down? Want the numbers to go up? Post more. Don’t like that others aren’t posting and thus entertaining you sufficiently? Well, there’s always pinkbike (other bike sites are available also)
That or (quietly, please) bask in your own superiority, knowing you were right all along
You have already had your say. My opinion is that it’s really poor behaviour from a moderator.
Oh sorry for replying to you.
Oh sorry for replying to you.
No need to get snippy: I was referring to the fact that you have already given your opinion on the bannings.
