Hi

as far as I can see we have one of these (which is now sticking and not resealing)
http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p86454?mkwid=sG5BhwoN2_dc&pcrid=46335180383&pkw=&pmt=&product=86454&gclid=CMWBqJ2phM8CFbEy0wod9i8MNw

and from -

"To clean the seal (if water is leaking into WC pan), unclip the
button assembly and remove cistern lid. Twist the main body of
valve 1/8th turn anti-clockwise and remove, pull the stem seal
off, clean with warm water, then re-fit the valve by re-inserting
the 2 lugs and turn 1/8th turn
clockwise and re-fit the cistern
lid."

It does turn 1/8 anticlockwise but it doesn't lift up/come out (not yet using brute force) - any hints or tips/techniques or is it time to apply brute force

Don't know about that particular one but if you need to apply violence make sure you can turn off the water!

If you need to replace, it may be easier to remove the cistern from the wall than try and do it in place.

I did mine recently and to take the whole cistern off. I think there was significant brute force involved too.

was hoping to avoid cistern off (have done that before and have learned the hard way that you should always use a new donut washer)

They do come off after twisting!
Bit of brute force required.
Just wiggle it around slightly, the lugs do bind sometimes
