A361, 5 miles from Tiverton.
What a crock!
Heading back from surfing, no damn petrol stations on this ere’ road..
Left Staunton with 42miles to empty in the tank, damn if I came over the brow of a hill and the “left in the tank” reads a big fat 0.
Curently chilling to some deep funky house through the speakers waiting for Lexus to send someone out to me.
I feel both annoyed with myself and the car..
🧐😤🤡
oh nicely done. Chilling listening to toons after surfing while waiting for the Lexus 'man' to come and help you 🙂
#HumbleBrag
Any good? Looked like there was too much south in the swell for the north coast, south coast looked ok but just couldn’t get away from work.
Saunton? Old school respect due!
Saunton was 3ft clean, no wind, tide on the ebb, sunny, 3.5hrs on the short wave board 👍
T’moz looks windy, had to take it while I can.
Must have driven past 2/3 petrol stations in Barnstaple/braunton and there is one at Newtown as well.
Will Mr Lexus charge you for your stoopidness?
Will Mr Lexus charge you for your stoopidness?
Probably less than the parking at saunton.
I came over the top from Wolly... no stations at all...
I will Scope them out for my next trip you can rely on that...
First time ever, in any car I’ve ever owned.
Such a dumbass.🤠
£4 low season all day..
Low season ends in a couple of weeks..
Get wet.
I was tempted to drive it in EV mode, but not sure how far that would get me...
5 bloody miles to Tiverton, 5 miles !!
Weekend is starting to look like it might have some potential.
And not be Baltic, which would be nice.
Petrol stations can get awkward.

5 miles? Had it actually spluttered and died or was it just the “miles till empty” reading zero.
Only ask because I’ve done about five miles in mine when it read zero. Everything off + judicious use of the clutch on flats and down hills.
(Not a Lexus mind you)
Turn the tap lever the other way onto reserve. Should get you 15 miles or so.
That's what I do on my motorbike anyway.
Cars are sneaky buggers...my 2009 Transit would introduce a fake missfire as soon as it hit 0, just to scare the crap out of you 🙂 I bet it had about 50 miles left in the tank but it certainly makes you drive like a saint to the nearest petrol station!
I was tempted to drive it in EV mode, but not sure how far that would get me…
Don't do that, you can run the battery below its normal minimum charge and ruin it. You can use EV to pull off the road though but that's it.
Dumbass back on the road 👍
What a nice man, a very nice man.. came all the way from Iifracombe just to be with me...
Awesome service.
Just filled up at Morrisons in Tiv, M5 hear I come.
Thanks for entertaining me chaps, gotta love this place.
Dumbass out.
Morrison’s is only 5.5 miles away. Less if you through the fields as the crow flies.
Doh ... bit late^^^
Bit late too but you would have driven past this
Newtown garage
Bishops Nympton, South Molton EX36 3QP

Well its a bit like testing the depth calibration by gently touching the sand 🙂
Nearly did the same in a new car maybe 25 years ago, relied on trip computer - doh ? Have to say being a geek I have run car to “zero” on trip computer locally then filled to brim at first petrol station and calibrated how much is left. Estimate is roughly 3l based on tank size.
You’ve outed yourself on the brand btw, you where a bit vague before 😉
You drove past two garages on the N Devon link both side by side (bar a sweeping corner). However at 8:30 ish ??I expect both would have been shut!
Dumbass back home.. 😎
A303 has night closures between here.....and.....there..... sort of Wincanton area.. sends you down the A30 to the back end of Salisbury (Nr Wilton) ..
Just in case you lot end up doing that route late at night 🤦♀️
Mr AA man (Lexus use anyone of the main breakdown services I found out BTW) said I did the right thing, to turn back to Sth Moulton would have been about 10miles and I’d have run out, to carry on would have meant getting caught out on the single carriageway heading down the hill into Tiv... rather fancy I did the right thing.. well... should have filled up earlier Obvz 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
EV lasts 10miles but it wasn’t an option I took seriously, I did think about it for about 11seconds...
Took some nice pics from on top of the hill, post them tomorrow just for those that miss good old Sauntz..
you can run the battery below its normal minimum charge and ruin it.
The car should protect the car from using too much battery. Certainly the BMW’s do.
Had my current car for 11 years, hasn't been below 1/4 tank in all that time - just saying 🙂
Never realised zero meant zero in some cars. My car will do at least 15 miles after reaching zero

Wait, are you actually saying you just stopped and called for rescue because the tank said zero when you went up a hill, when you hadn't actually run out? Takes all sorts I suppose.
are you actually saying you just stopped and called for rescue because the tank said zero when you went up a hill, when you hadn’t actually run out?
I suspect Lexus are used to people like that.
Never realised zero meant zero in some cars.
New legislation in some markets for some types of cars (mostly hybrid or electric) very little tolerance, none of this 50-80 miles after zero is allowed, more like 10-15. Some manufacturers are putting the tech in all markets (rather than making different cars for different markets.)
The car should protect the car from using too much battery. Certainly the BMW’s do.
Almost all of them do. Unless they were engineered by someone who really doesn't know their arse from their elbow.
Some models won't allow the electric drive to work unless there is fuel in the tank though. Probably as the strategies for protecting the battery are expensive and complicated. Running out of fuel is easy.
Wow. Been 30 miles past "0" range on my Volvo and thought nothing of it.
On top of that you have an electric motor which you could have used on the uphill sections, then rolled downhill afterward. You can damage a battery by discharging it fully, but the car's electronics will prevent that from happening.
Never realised zero meant zero in some cars.
Depends what you mean by "zero" I guess. My car's trip computer gives me a warning at "50 miles to empty" when the actual analogue fuel gauge is on "zero".
I know from bitter experience that once it gets to "0 miles to empty" if I switch everything off and cruise with the clutch in then I can squeeze about another four-five miles on vapour, sweat and dregs before it actually starts to cough and splutter (which I'm sure is a terrible thing to do to a modern engine).
By that point the analogue fuel gauge pointer is well "below zero".
Back in the 80s I ran out of petrol in a hire Escort on the M4. With a gauge showing 1/4 full. Damn Dagenham dustbins!
Also I know that in my car "50 miles to empty" gets to "0 miles to empty" in about 25 miles.
Which coincidentally is how I know the previous facts 🙂
Pic of moody Saunton.. from the hill, after a great splash about.

are you actually saying you just stopped and called for rescue because the tank said zero when you went up a hill, when you hadn’t actually run out?
I suspect Lexus are used to people like that.
Yeah, I did stop at the top of a hill and call the Lexus helpline. I found a P pull in off the main carriageway and thought it the best place to pull over and stop. if you know that road it’s a very busy A route covering North Devon and full of fast cars and Trucks..
The “Cruising Range” said zero, I assumed it meant ... zero. And whilst I’m not an idiot, I did think it meant ... zero. Yes BITD at some point 0 meant about a gallon, and we would have all plaid chicken to see whose butt clenched the hardest when the car splutters..
But... I’ve thankfully long since passed those days, maybe 20 years ago I would have risked it, but I’m normally the guy who sees 1/4 left and goes an fills up...
I do agree Lexus does indeed have many calls like this, we are a particular demographic I will admit.. that pic of Alan Partridge isn’t too dissimilar from my mug shot.. including the tasty blue suit.. hair and teeth and not a lot in between.. a...ha.
Its my first Lexus, and by Lord they have teeny tiny petrol tanks.. I can fill it with £33.. no kidding.(service station cost bingo) that’s 450 Miles the way I drive (grandad with fluffy slippers, peering over the steering wheel, sticking rigidly to speed limits..or less if I want to)
Last car was an XC60 D4se and that would do 600 (thereabouts) to the tankful and cost the equivalent of a decent haircut, a meal out, new shoes and some dishwasher tablets..
I will, as a matter of course, ask my Lexus dealer about the fuel low/battery point, it’s good to know thier POV and see if it lines up with the AA Man.
Surfing wise Sunday does look good, I won’t be at Saunton.. we have a local break that looks like it will work nicely.
Misleading thread title, op not actually run out of petrol 🙂
plaid chicken
Hi!
I have coaxed quite a few miles on a big drive back from Yorkshire to Edinburgh in the old Saab. I then knew how much the tank capacity really was. Unfortunately I think that had the effect of draining all the crap out of the tank into the fuel system as it was never really the same again.
Just saying. Either top up at 1/4 every time, or drain to 0 and refill a lot, not once in a while...
You take your car to work
I'll take my board
and when you're out of fuel
I'm still afloat
On the way back from the Alps last year, my co-driver decided we could make the next services in my trusty (but thirsty) Old Hyundai Tucson. The gauge blanked about 70km short of the services 😲 We made it with lots of HGV drafting and freewheeling downhill. When we opened the tank up there was an almighty hiss as the pressure equalised.
I don't have a range meter on my car and it has the world's most paranoid fuel gauge - the empty light comes on with a lot of fuel left. I regularly do over 40 miles with the light on (so that's over a gallon left) and have taken it close to 70 miles on alleged empty without running out. Gets quite tense sometimes though...
Isn't it annoying? My car beeps at 50 miles to go but I've managed to run out once. You do feel a fool. Not as bad as my mum causing dad to run out 'cos she wanted to use her Green Shield stamps!

75 miles with no fuel!
I had an old mk3 golf that the fuel gauge failed on completely. The next couple of years were based on remembering to reset the trip and knowing it would do ~250m on a tank so filling up around 200m.
I never ran out, but I did have one confusing morning at the petrol station where I'd filled up the night before, not reset the trip and promptly forgotten. I couldn't work out why the pump kept stopping until it starting spilling onto my feet....
Update, warning update imminent..
For information on Hybrid Petrol vehicles..
I popped in to my local Lexus dealer (I said I would) and asked the question about
a) how far will the car drive once the fuel “cruising range” reads zero?
b) when the orange fuel light comes on, how much is left in the tank?
c) how far will the car drive on battery alone?
his answers were:
a) the car has a 45ltr tank, when the fuel “cruising range” reads zero there is “about” 10ltrs left in reserve. So as I mentioned earlier in the thread I normally fill it up with £30-£32 (pump price dependant) which now makes complete sense. So essentially I could have carried on my last 5miles easily into Tiverton where I filled up.
b) the orange fuel light comes on when there is about 15ltrs left in the tank. So 5ltrs of Orange then 10ltrs to completely empty.
c) it will drive 12 to 14 Miles in EV mode, it will come on even if the tank “cruising range” reads zero, if the tank is properly empty the EV will only do about 5miles but the battery will be completely flat and there are only two places in the county that can recharge the batteries from completely flat.. no damage is done to the battery if you do run it completely flat (he said they store vehicles completely flat) but the car will need a reset and service then Dyno checks and this is like a PDI and can take up to a couple of weeks to complete.
Obviously this is all road condition, temperature and driving style dependant. As I drive like a grandad I could have probably driven all the way home 🤡🕺
Just thought I’d conclude this thread with some answers just in case you decide to buy a hybrid and wonder just how much “reserve” fuel you have.
Not worth of a new thread but I thought since it's a similar vein and likely to bring a chuckle.
Got a call from the wife Thursday morning .... Boilers not working.(even by this alone I'm sure some of you know where this is heading)
Thursday night we do some diagnosis via the phone....
Is there pressure.... Yup
Is the fire valve open or closed - open
Is the overheat triggered --open
Is the burner locked out.... Yes.
Is their fuel - looks like there is some.
Show me the tiger loop.....empty.
Only gone and run out of Kero.
Doh. Thank goodness for electric showers and wood stoves
