Any experience or trades?
If not you will find it very hard, I tried for months and got nowhere...

Go online and search for drilling companies, get your cv and a covering letter sorted and register with them, email or send in the post.

And do your homework, it won't happen on its own.. Good luck.

Double thread tactic...

Just wondered if anyone could give me any advice about finding offshore work in the oil/gas industry .I worked as a electrician until 1996, since then I have been working as a R.F Field Engineer in the mobile communications industry .
All the positions I have seen, keep indicating you must have worked offshore already . I was just wondering what the best way to get the initial start. I have looked on a few other forums and the replies are always pretty negative regarding finding your first job.(as in don't wast your money on the courses)
I am planning on doing my survival/mist course shortly .
Will be very grateful for any advice.

Thanks

Ashley

I would do it if I had no option, ie if I lost my job. I wouldn't leave a job to do such a prohibitive work schedule. No cycling for two weeks. Phuck that.

Welding inspection's where it's at (or was mebbe)
A mate of a mate went out to a Philips rig on Xmas day years ago cos the rig was 'offline' after work was done on some pipes & they couldn't pipe some oil or gas or whatever it was till it was passed. He was charging something like 2K an hour. (or he might have been a solicitor)

If your trade is electrical your money would probably be better spent getting your Ex tickets rather than survival, you could look down that route and try and ad hoc with the likes of SKN or Dron and Dickson to get some offshore experience then look to find a core crew position on the back of that.

Thanks for the advice .
The double thread was a error . I had started writing the post and my browser did something odd when a pop up appeared .
I am looking for either electrical or a communications position.
I have experience of V Sat equipment and have completed a industrial climbing course recently .

Thanks

Got a mate that does it. Great money, and he likes the hours (he spends a lot more time with his kids).

Flipside is proper breaks from the kids and living on a rig.

Do your research too - he's had to do survival courses and get new welding tickets, despite being a coach builder for nearly 20 years.

Get someone to check your application letters too. 😉

And thats why you never listen to your mates 🙂

Im a Rope Access NDT Inspector with welding inspection tickets from my previous life as a welder. Welding offshore is pretty much finished in the North Sea. Not always, but its kept to an absolute minimum on Platforms as it is seen as a needless risk due to the obvious spark and heat potential. There are a lot of guys with weld Insp tickets and experience already so why would he go and do them??

3.0 is your basic visual which you need to have for 3 years to progress to 3.1 which MIGHT just get him work.

Best bet is to stick to what you know best and tailor that with whatever courses you need to do.

Experience counts way more than people expect.
