I've worked in an office environment for 20+ years. In that time, one thing that has always baffled me is that about 80% of the women have a tube of hand cream on their desk, which they apply about once every couple of hours.
What gives? Surely office work is about the easiest type of work on the hands? Are women's hands particularly susceptible to adverse wear and tear from plastic keyboards, biros and A4 notepads?
Sexist
Do you know what, I know what you mean.
I'd also like to add at this point that Body Pink Grapefruit hand cream is the absolute nuts, sadly it's hard to find their shops and costs £5 for a tiny tube (plus delivery).
Air con innit.
I used to have a tub of cream in my desk. I could never work out if it was the cycling or the office AC/heating that meant the skin on my hands dried out to the point it would crack and bleed. Seems to have stopped since changing jobs (and cycling even more) so I'm inclined to think it was the office.
I do have horrible hands though, it wasn't until I started working in TV and seeing them on screen a lot whilst testing cameras that I realised quite how horrible they are, I'm 30 with the hands of an 80yr old! I imagine if I cared about my appearance I might take better care of them.
Air con innit.
wotaboutit? I sit n the same offices, do the same work, and my hands are hardly those of an 19th century navvie.
i used to have a bottle of hand moisturiser on my desk
Air con used to dry my knuckles out to the point they would crack and bleed.
like Tinas - have not had the issue since i moved jobs and went back on the tools.
back in office now - reckon its on its way back.
I have one on my desk right now.
Haven't used it since winter, mind...
i read that as Orifices
Dishwashers innit.
This was never a problem when they were elbow deep in mild green Fairy liquid back in the day
I have a tube of moisturiser at my desk I use when my hands get bad, get really dry and crack/bleed as above, gets worse over winter. Having a small child and washing hands lots for nappy changes seems to have exacerbated it.
*looks around desks..
Yep, here too.
The younger girls don’t, just the more mature lady.
Have you tried applying Nut Butter at your desk? Try it one day 😜
I think you've got two types of people here.
1) People for whom cosmetics is basically a hobby; who buy hand cream, foot cream, face cream, arse cream ignoring the notion that what they need is skin cream; who have more bottles in the bathroom than your average branch of Boot's; who can be found at the Mac counter in Debenham's on a Saturday afternoon trying to get a disinterested partner to choose between Ruby Sunrise and Foxy Blush before eventually buying both; who wouldn't think twice about spending £50 on a tub of body butter.
2) People who have dry / sore hands.
I think you’ve got two types of people here.
Nope, 3 types.
1) people who wash hands, use hand cream and don't have sore hands.
2) people who wash hands and have sore hands.
3) people who don't wash hands.
Are you really saying that washing your hands gives you sore hands?
3) people who don’t wash hands.
Well, given that one of the main ingredients of hand cream is often urea, which is also one of the main components of piss, maybe that's the reason that men that don't wash their hands don't use hand cream.
I used to get fairly bad skin on my hands. A combination of greasy mucky hands being scrubbed clean after bike maintenance, muddy rides, long cold and wet commutes through the winter plus two showers on commuting days left my hands pretty dry and poorly.
Maybe these office lasses have an equally hard time. Give them a break. It's nice to have nice hands.
Are you really saying that washing your hands gives you sore hands?
Yep, soap can dry your hands out, for sure!
IHN - not everybody's skin is the same! Though I think for a lot of women it's just a nice thing to do to yourself every now and again.
My skin changes with the seasons - it's a lot drier in the winter, and my shins itch to buggery, so I need a lot heavier duty moisturiser everywhere once it starts to get cold, and that includes my hands.
like Tinas
Like Tina's what?
Yep, soap can dry your hands out, for sure!
Of course it can, but for normal people in normal conditions surely not? Perhaps the OP works in an office full of females with OCD?
My hands get pretty dry in winter - I go through phases of using some kind of moisturiser on my hands when they need it.
I also get the same thing as wallop - really dry shins that itch like mad during the winter months - slap a bit of moisturiser on them in the morning & they are fine.
Of course, I should scour them with a mix of sand and the crushed bones of my dead enemies but my Wife says that makes a real mess of the bathroom.
I can recommend the Body Shop Hemp stuff. Works wonders in winter 😀
Hemp stuff. Works wonders in winter
Yeah, you just don’t give a shit!
DezB +1

I've got that too, it smells revolting, nothing like weed but still horrible.
Works really well, but obvs that's of secondary concern.
Are you really saying that washing your hands gives you sore hands?
Yes as it washes off the natural oils.
Lots of women mosturise their hands, men generally don't as grrrrr! We're men.
Ummmm. I’m a bloke, I wash my hands whenever I err, need to, and I don’t get sore hands. I think that there’s an element of frequent use creating the need for continued use for some people, with hand creams (and chapstick type stuff, but that’s a whole other conversation).

Yup certainy it becomes a habit.
We now have these powerful hand driers at work, they are great for blowing the piss off your hands.

Except that the use of hand cream was borne of the damage already done to hands
*Everyone's different shocker*
I'm a bloke and wash my hands frequently due to work standards, we supply hand cream for staff and as my hands sometimes dry out I occasionally use out. Weird.
My skin changes with the seasons
You are suffering from ecdysis.
My personal favourite is when the women in my office gather round to sample someone's new purchase, then stand in a huddle, rubbing it in like a squad of bluebottles parked on a shite.
This was never a problem when they were elbow deep in mild green Fairy liquid back in the day
Ah the good old days. How how did that jingle again?
”hands that do dishes can be as soft as your face... if you wash your face with Fairy”
*Everyone’s different shocker*
Absolutely; hence my use of the phrase ‘an element of’. My comment was in relation to this little gem;
<three sorts of people>
1) people who wash hands, use hand cream and don’t have sore hands.
2) people who wash hands and have sore hands.
3) people who don’t wash hands.
Sorry, I should have made that more clear.
Do you know what, I know what you mean.

i like the Burts Bee’s one that smells like you should be rubbing it on a leg of lamb before roasting.
Oh my god, I'm a snake!
What kind of moisturiser?
<span style="font-size: 0.8rem;">I've heard of some blokes masturbate in the office bogs, maybe all the women are at it as well. </span>
Wummin's magazines are to blame. All those features about how to avoid premature aging, keep looking young forever etc.

What kind of man feels the need to discuss moisturiser with strangers on a form?
Palmar psoriasis here. I can’t be bothered with moisturiser in the office. When it’s really bad I have potent steroid ointment at night with cotton gloves. I think it’s an affectation.
Having said that, I read that cosmetic surgery can do a lot, but nothing for hands. At least mine get new covering a lot faster than everyone else!
Hand cream on my desk in winter - cold weather commuting causes my thumbs to crack and bleed
I'd be more concerned about people who work from home and keep a bottle of moisturiser on their desk.
What kind of man feels the need to discuss moisturiser with strangers on a form?
Why what's wrong with discussing why women may use it?
