We are staying in an AirBnB near the Naviglio Grande - any one got any good tips for things to do/eat/drink/dance? I'm taking her to the spa on the Monday for her birthday but otherwise nothing planned as yet 🙂

Cheers
Gaz

Going by train?
*Italian Male accent*
Milano centrale Milano Centrale.

Do all the things listed for tourists, there's a few art gallerys and a castle after a bit of a walk from the centre. Or get a train to Venice or Verona.

Velasca Tower is nice, it's their equivalent of the Oxo Tower I guess.

mikewsmith - don't worry we're well familiar with that district 😉 😀

did think of Venice but we might just do that on another trip. more than likely we will get trashed on the first night, end up trying to get into a few clubs and then spend the next day feeling sorry for ourselves trying to do the tourist stuff. but good places to get trashed are a must!

I don't usually enjoy looking around old buildings but I have to admit, Milan Cathedral was pretty impressive. Walking in and looking up reminded me of the Mines of Moria scene in LOTR and the view from the top is good - do that.

Oh, and those sweet pasties from the covered arcade thing across square (Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II apparently) were lovely - get one of those.

We went in June, kind of underwhelmed with the place to be honest, but that's after visiting lots of northern Italy

Day trip to Verona on the trains would be my suggestion, we enjoyed that much more

Getting trashed - stop at home

just be careful of pickpockets in the main areas - worst place I've been for it. Mate had his wallet lifted, got surrounded by a load of kids all gabbling at him, 'hey mister, hey mister!' almost impossible to keep track of them all and by the time he'd cottoned on he'd lost his phone

Spent a decent amount of time there with work, few places I enjoyed:
- Start with the cathedral including the roof visit as the views are great. No shorts or skirts above the knee when we were there but may have changed
- On the corner of the cathedral, Wine while people watching next to the cathedral, bottle of wine is relatively cheap (€10 for rose) and is in a great spot http://www.signorvino.com/en/wine-shop/milan-duomo
- From the above walk across to the department store and go to the top floor where there is a fantastic restaurant (also used to be a mozzarella bar up there) https://www.rinascente.it/mobile/views/food/store.aspx?storecode=451#/en
- Skip dessert and go to one of gellato places behind the wine bar, get a take out and amble through the square as sitting in is expensive with no views
- Finish and go to the Aperol terrace bar for an evening drink http://www.terrazzaaperol.it/en/home/
- Take the train to Monza, lovely old town with some great fish restaurants and you can always do a track walk at the race circuit

If you were there another day or two I'd say pop up to Como on the train. It's amazing!

Lago di Como +1
Take the funicular up for superb views of the lake and then GI for a spin on the hydrofoil.
If you have more time, go to Bellagio.
Oh and Monza is worth a quick visit to gawp at the banked turns IMHO.

Bravo Perchy Bravo... 😆

We did the Italian GP a few years ago and visited Milan, a few tips,
As said pickpockets are rife, as are the local con men. One tried to tie a bracelet around Mrs Feet and demanded 5 euro for the privilege. Be firm and just say Non.
The Cathedral is stunning, but ladies shoulders need covering. Strict Catholic innit.
The city itself we thought was a bit meh. Not as nice as Paris but still worth a visit.

Watch out for pickpockets on the trains. We were caught out by the being bumped into by a gypsy woman carrying a baby. Distracted us while her accomplice went very quickly into our rucksack. They didn't get much mind you; their own fault for picking such a rubbish target!

roof of the Cathedral, paintings in the Brera, otherwise I've found it the second most disappointing city in Italy after Turin.

Venice, verona, Padua and the lakes all way better in that region

Alfa Romeo museum outside Milan. It's fantastic. Even my wife loved it, and she's not into cars!

FTFY 🙂

To be fair, it was a consequence of expectations - Florence is pretty nice.

The wife and I are off to Milan for long weekend.

I'll be on full guard for pickpockets/con men - didn't realise it was so bad and thought this time of year it would have calmed down. Suppose millions of visitors have no problems though.

We're gonna spend a day around Como - train up to Varenna, ferries to the usual spots then boat back to Como for train back to Milan.

Another day trip may be train to either Verona or Turin.

We're definitely gonna do Duomo and roof, but I we're mostly going to eat and drink...like all my holidays.

Like everything, don't be the slowest antelope in the pack, that's usually enough. But the 'gypsy' rush was so obvious and overt but still did him, hands everywhere and then gone.

There's some miseries on here - Milan is lovely and well worth a trip. I've been to Como, Verona and Venice too - all lovely - but if I was going to Milan, I'd probably go to Milan 🙂
